In REFLECTIONS ON THE FAERIE AND ELFIN FOLK, we Silver Elves continue with a volume 7 of our question and answer series addressing the numerous questions about elves and faeries and about living the Elven Way. We Silver Elves wish you a very Happy Elven Star Day, dear Kindred and Friends! It is a 7.7.7. day in numerology or July (7) 7th (7) 2023 (which adds up to 7) and so what better day to celebrate Elven Star Day than on 777. It is a Day to celebrate manifesting Elfin/Faerie in our lives and some say the portals to the Faerie Realms are open on this day and thus it is a good day to bring in the magic and beauty in our lives all around us on this very day.

     “Being an elf is an organic thing. Even if there were no books to read or stories that tell of us in the modern media, we’d still know ours’elves to be elves, perhaps by a different name, but elves none-the-less. So, too, we have a holiday, so to speak, called Elven Star Day. Elven Star Day doesn’t occur on a particular date each year, as most holidays do. It isn’t even based upon a somewhat floating calendar, the way that Easter, Thanksgiving and Chinese New Year are. Rather, an elf will wake up one morning and hear a voice whisper, “It’s Elven Star Day!” or perhaps they will just feel this strongly or sense it in their intuition and then for seven days they will meditate on each one of the points of the seven-pointed Elven Star and see what it reveals to them as well as sending out elven blessings into the world. We Silver Elves happen to love the Elven Star (acute seven-pointed star) from the first time we saw it posted on one of the letters of the Elf Magic Mail (see our two books of that title) that we and our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters (EQD) used to mail out every week for over two years back in the mid-1970s. Our sisters Arwen and Elanor who were the founders of the EQD, first conceived (in this lifetime in the mid 1970s) of using this star for the elven community and put them upon the EQD letters on numerous occasions. Since the five-pointed star represented Mankind (inspired in Arwen’s mind by Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man), Arwen Eveningstar added wings to that figure (so one ray for the head, two for the arms, two for the legs, and two for the wings) and thus came up with a 7 pointed star to represent the Elves and the evolution of humankind into the Angelic Realms. Obviously, due to the wings, it represents our faerie kindred as well. In fact, the very first letter of the Elf Magic Mail shared by the EQD that had this symbol showed a five-pointed star with wings called “The Winged Star” (you may see a photo of it here on this page).  Thus from the very beginning the idea existed beneath the surface that this was also the Faerie Star. So it represents all Fae folk, elves, pixies, faeries, brownies and otherkin and all are welcome to use it.

We, collectively with the EQD, published and sent out by snail mail three letters a week to a mailing list of about 300 elf friends and the Elven Star was featured on many of them. We Silver Elves continued this practice of putting the Elven Star in our own Silver Elves letters when we took up the Dharma of publishing these musings, which now can be found under the title The Magical Elven Love Letters (see volumes 1, 2, and 3 and sample letters), which we published from the 1979 up until the early 2000’s. Although, while we began these writings as snail mail they evolved into emails as the internet came into existence. We had over 500 elves and elf friends on our mailing list when we shifted from publishing those letters to publishing our books in 2011. And now, of course, these letters have re-manifested as the articles often published on our blogs and also in our question and answer book series.

As we Silver Elves say, we’ve always loved the Elven Star and have numerous versions of it on our walls in our eald (elf home), and even on the back of this computer that we’re currently composing this very article upon. We also have various versions, from small to large and naked to jeweled, as amulets that we wear whenever we venture forth into the world. Of course, through the course of time, the faerie folk have taken it up and began calling it the Faerie star and they seem to love it as much as we do. There is just something about it that calls to the hearts of many of the elfae (elves and other magical folk from the Faerie Realm).

Yet, there is no obligation to like it or wear it or have it about your home. It either calls to you as an elfae or it doesn’t and it really doesn’t matter, neither to us or the world of spirit. What matters really is what speaks to you heart, soul and imagination as an elfin being. What symbols, if any, remind you of Elfin and our life in the Otherworldly realms of Enchantment?

We elves have our elven star, and perhaps you could say our elf ears, while the faeries have their wings, but no one is obligated to like the Elven/Faerie star, or wear elf ears or faerie wings, or like any particular symbol, fashion, or whatever. What we do expect is that you will find or create the fashion or symbols that speak to your heart and will use them to increase your connection to Elfin and help you evolve as an elf and hopefully inspire us and other kindred as well. How you do that is really up to you. And if you create or find a new symbol that speaks to many of us and extends our culture, then that is even better.

So let’s all celebrate Elven Star Day! Dress up if you like and do wear your elven star pendant if you have one and surely show your elven soulful spirit in your smile. Make a delicious Elfin feast and share it! Commune with the trees and all of Nature! For those who love the elven star, here is the meditation on the rays that we Silver Elves created, performed and published in 1986 in Circle Network News. We did this meditation for seven days, one ray per day, for the elven people and elven manifest. We still do this today, at least twice a year, generally in early Spring and Autumn. And of course today on Elven Star Day and invite you to do the same!

The Elfin Star Runes: Following the Elf Star to Faerie

     The Elfin Star Runes may be used to assist you in what you need to develop as you progress upon the Elven Way for s’elf development and further awakening to your elven nature. They also may be used as an oracle system to know what the wisdom of the ancient elven has to say to you. We Silver Elves often draw an elfin star rune for further information to accompany our daily spiritual practice of throwing the I-Ching or in a tarot reading about a specific question for which we are in need of guidance. The Elfin Star Runes may also be used for your magic to write words in both English and Arvyndase, the magical language of the Silver Elves, and also in numbers.

All 49 runes or sigils for these runes can be laid upon an elven star and will be found to conform to the various lines of the star. Thus, we call them The Elfin Star Runes.

The First Magical Achievement – Presence

Sensing this presence within us, which is sensing our true nature and its eternal aspect, is a key achievement of the path.”

We sense Elfin and the supra-dimensional realms as being separate from us, calling to us from afar; but in time we realize it is in fact our own s’elves calling to us. The Call comes from within and it comes from our future s’elves, who are ever existent within us, and ever striving toward realization. Again, at first this Presence within may seem separate from us but what it wants and what we want are really one and the same, and we come in time to realize, in fact, that we are really one and the same. When we remove all that is illusionary from our being, we are left with our own true s’elf; and that s’elf is the Eternal Presence that is ever a part of us, and ever us.”

At some point one steps beyond this stage and begins the real work of making the potential real. This is a long process and requires great perseverance and many give up when they realize how very long the Quest is, and how very much effort it requires. In time, however, one realizes that no matter how long it takes one will never get there if one doesn’t begin and continue on persistently. This first step, while seemingly small, is really a huge leap forward.”

Why the Faeries Have Not Now All Gone Due to the Encroachment of Cities

“The fact is that the cities haven’t driven us away. Nor has science gotten rid of us either. It is dominator men that tried to eliminate us and the normal folk who still wish to deny our manifest existence. Not that we are all that found of cities. We much prefer Nature, but we make do and will continue to do so until we once again have manifested Elfin and Faerie upon this planet and, in time,
out in space.”

There is the idea that with the encroachment of Mankind and of towns and cities, which men mistakenly consider civilization, that we elfae folk and fair folk are all now dead or departed, perhaps to the last remaining wild places and wilderness areas that still exist. This goes along with the idea that is sometimes found in fantasy novels that the magic is now all gone or nearly so. That once the world was a place of magic but it has now left, having been chased off or killed off, presumably by science making this into a mundane and magic-less world, unless you consider science and technology magic, which we Silver Elves do.

And yet, it should be quite clear that while we elfae folk do tend to enjoy and love Nature and the wilds that we are also rather fond of each other, which usually means towns, cities, etc. Not in and of thems’elves. We are seldom fond of cities for their own sake. But they do give us a chance to find and interact with each other and while most of us would retreat to a more rural life closer to Nature if we could, the vast majority of us, as yet, are unable to do so at this time in our evolution. And even then, we would generally only do so once we have found our significant otherkin.

In that way, we are rather like the trees and birds. Many of them still live in the wild but others have adapted to living in towns and cities. It is a somewhat dangerous life for trees in a city because you never know when some man might decide to cut you down. But really, the same is true of the trees in the wild, which is why we have so few wild areas left anymore and most of our great forests are gone and those that are left are fast dwindling, again at the hands of men.

And birds also, or some of them, at least, have adapted to city and town life. We listen to the birds every day and, of course, say hello to them when we take our walks about our neighborhood as well as greeting the trees, the geckos, lizards, dogs and every other creature we come across. We are friendly elves.

The fact that we elfae, or many, even most of us, have adapted to urban life is reflected in novels that are identified as Urban Fantasy such as Charles DeLint and others write. It is also reflected quite often in what is known as Magical Realism, as reflected by Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic series. Our own novel of modern elven, The Elves of Lyndarys, takes place mostly out in the countryside but, even then, the characters sometimes go to the local town or to the city. Elves like those in Tolkien’s works that live isolated in places like Rivendell or Lothlorien would be able to do so because they have an organic community that they rely upon. Most of we elfae in the modern world have lost our tribes through the ages. They were persecuted out of existence or forcibly absorbed into the cultures of men. So, for us, finding our kindred in a world that is often hostile to the notion of our identity and sometimes our very existence naturally leads us to those places where others of our kind may be found and that is most often towns and cities or gatherings out in the countryside or wild areas organized by those from the towns and cities.

First, we find each other. Then, perhaps, if we can, we retreat from the world.

But the point is that we incarnated elfae are not gone from the world. Even those more ethereal faeries that ‘fairy seers’ talk about living in trees here and there, are not gone from the world either, apparently. There are all those gardens that they can abide in, at least according to the lore and the accounts of those psychics who claim to see them.

For our own part, we Silver Elves consider the butterflies, dragonflies, moths and other such winged beings to be faeries and we saw two monarchs a week ago just a block over. We know most of those who ‘see’ faeries tell us that they are little people with wings, while at the same time usually denying our essential elfinness, but we think that most likely they are just anthropomorphizing faeries and do not understand we elfae are not all humanoid in appearance. Some of us are, surely, but the vast majority of elfae kind most probably are not.

Is Faerie Lore Fading from the World?

“. . . . the notion that the oral tradition concerning faerie lore and encounters with fae will disappear altogether, seems unlikely to us Silver Elves. While people don’t gather in their homes in community groups in the evenings as much as they once did, faerie tales still continue in literature and books, such as our own about elfae culture and others’ books as well that frequently concern faerie seers of various sorts and their own beliefs and experiences with we fae folk. Although, usually their experiences are with our more imaginal and ephemeral and ethereal kindred. . . . . . .  In fact, we not only have no concern about the loss of faerie tradition and lore due to the cessation of the oral tradition as it once existed, but are rather of the opinion that modern forms of media have in fact expanded the area over which faerie lore can be shared as well as expanding the potential audience as well.”

 

   

The book Strange Terrain by Barbara Rieti is a scholarly exploration of Faerie lore as it existed, was experienced, and was passed on in Newfoundland. In it the author posits the question about whether Faerie Lore will continue to exist in the future. This is partly because Faerie lore and the passing on of tales about encounters with we fae was mostly carried on by oral tradition back in the days before radio or television and seemed to be decreasing as people stayed in their homes and watched tv in the evenings instead of gathering together, as they used to do in small communities, to listen to various tales for entertainment.

     Also, the influence of modern scientific thinking, as meager as it is as yet, has also, as we’ve pointed out in other of our books and as both Barbara Rieti and Janice Bord in her book Fairies indicate has led to the idea of encounters with faeries being replaced by encounters with aliens from outer space. Although, in fact, the essence of these tales are, as both authors point out, quite similar. This is so much so that those who believe in aliens would surely suggest that what were thought of as faeries in the past were, in fact, space aliens and those who believe in faeries, well, still believe in faeries along with the possibility of aliens. We elfae tend to be a more open minded and less fanatical lot, although there are exceptions surely on both sides of this equation.

     For our own part, we Silver Elves believe all of the above. We, of course, believe in faeries, since we are fae folk ours’elves. So that goes almost without saying. And while, as far as we know, we haven’t had any encounters with aliens from outer space, we don’t discount that possibility either. Especially, as it seems extremely probable that such beings exist considering the vastness of the Universe. But at the same time, we live in such a rural backwater of the galaxy and the distance between us and other solar systems is so vast, it seems unlikely, although possible, that anyone has stumbled upon us except by accident. And, we suspect, having observed how primitive mankind is overall, they would be unlikely to return.

     Also, while the oral tradition itself has given way to a more permanent accounting of such tales now set down in print, it has survived rather well on the internet and in social media, which is rather like the oral tradition in the sense that the tales and experiences passed on are less likely to be permanently recorded (or remembered exactly) and most likely to be altered as they pass from one teller to another, which is one of the earmarks of the oral tradition.

     In fact, we not only have no concern about the loss of faerie tradition and lore due to the cessation of the oral tradition as it once existed, but are rather of the opinion that modern forms of media have in fact expanded the area over which faerie lore can be shared as well as expanding the potential audience as well.

     It is true that many folk, as was the case with the oral tradition, merely pass on what they have heard and their own experiences conform with traditional lore to the point that they cannot consider or experience other possibilities, but that has always been the case.

     We Silver Elves and others of our kindred, on the other hand, take a fresh look at the lore and understand it from our own lives (see our books Illuminating Faerie; Faerie Fae and Otherkin Tribes; and The Elven Way), our own experiences with various elfae sorts we know and have known. And this includes those manifest in humanoid bodies, as we are, and those more ethereal fae that we’ve encountered from time to time as well.

     We need not fear that faerie lore and tradition will be replaced entirely by alien encounters, any more than we should fear that fantasy will give way utterly to science fiction. In fact, in some faerie lore the ancient Scythians came from the Anunnaki who were aliens from space, thus uniting us with alien lore (see The Realm of the Ring Lords by Laurence Gardner).

       They both have their audiences and certainly there is an overlap between them. As long as Faerie calls to the hearts of us and our kindred, and others in the world, such as St. Tolkien, tales of Faerie will continue and we expect, more than likely increase. For we are far from done here, and in many ways, just beginning.

What Do Elves Mean by the Term Otherworldly? And Is Elfin a Place or State of Mind?

“When we Silver Elves define otherworldly, we are not talking entirely about imaginary worlds so much as visionary worlds, worlds that could be if we were, or most of us were, more spiritually developed, intelligent, loving and cooperative. When we speak of otherworldly, we mean a world that exists for some of us because we make it real in our own lives. It is otherworldly because it is so different in essence, culture and behavior from the normal cultures (in their various forms) that the mass of humanity embraces and believe to be the only real worlds because they believe in them. . . . We could call our realms alternate worlds, although we very much like the term otherworldly with its combination of spiritual, imaginal, mystical, magical and supernatural connotations. Which is part of why we elves are otherworldly beings in the first place. We embrace what others reject and we do so completely with all our hearts, minds and souls. . . . wherever we elfae folk go or abide there goes our spirits as well and there manifests Elfin/Faerie expressed outwardly by the radiance of our inner elvish being.”

     

What Do Elves Mean by the Term Otherworldly?

We Silver Elves commonly use the word otherworldly to describe Faerie and Elfin. If you look it up in the dictionary, otherworldly is defined as a world that is imaginary or spiritual. It is interesting to our elvish minds that imaginary worlds and spiritual worlds are essentially defined as the same thing, as though things spiritual are really imaginary. However, that is to be expected in this most material of ages where nearly everything is defined by physicality and our elven and faerie-ness are often ascribed to physical features and genetic lineage. Although, while Men seem to put spiritual in the same category as imaginary, by this definition, we doubt that they would do the opposite, which is to posit that things imaginary are necessarily spiritual, which would be a more elvish and otherworldly way of looking at things.

     Some dictionaries define otherworldly as referring to a world beyond death or beyond our present reality. Although, they also carry the meaning of imaginary realms as well. This is quite in keeping, in its way, with the notion that we elfae folk live longer than normal humans or that we are immortal or close to being immortal. Immortal, we suppose, in the way that vampires are conceived of as being immortal in the sense that they will live forever unless they are killed or commit suicide, or forget to use their suntan lotion. What we might call provisional immortality, or immortality, sort of.

     Part of this idea of otherworldliness derives from the fact that our elfae peoples were absorbed, for the most part, by dominating and dominant cultures that violently overran us ages ago. So far back, in fact, that our people have been turned into myths and legends to the point where some people, in fact most people, in the modern age question whether our peoples ever existed at all. This despite the clear and evident fact that we modern elfae assert our heritage very strongly. Of course, they just think that we are crazy or imagining things, or even suffering from Schizotypal Personality Disorder (see our blog article on this here) for believing in things that are not accepted by the mass of humanity. For truth in the world is required to be popular to be accepted. 

     For many elfae, this results in an effort to find their ancestry in the material world and to create graphs or charts tracing their lineage back to the Scythians or some other peoples that are seen as the source and inspiration for many of the legends about elves, fae, faeries and otherkin of various sorts.

     We Silver Elves, however, as we’ve made quite clear often to the chagrin of those who insist upon a materialistic basis for the elfae nature, are of the opinion that we are elfin spirits incarnating purposely into humanoid bodies and our physical lineage is not utterly germane to our true natures any more than the car that we drive defines our personality. Although some people in the world would believe this to be so.

     Not that we reject the idea that some individuals are descended from the Scythians, the Phrygian or certain Norse or Scandinavian folk who were considered elfin or aelfar. But we trace our own elvish lineage back further beyond those people who were, really, dominator cultures, to those even earlier folks who lived in partnership societies, where males and females were considered equals and women were not seen as being somehow weaker or inferior or needing to be subdued and controlled by men as was the case with many of those ancient peoples and which persists today. This perspective still exists very strongly in some cultures in the modern world but manifests also in certain ways in many of those cultures that are seen as advanced, developed and supposed enlightened in the world. First world nations, as they like to call themselves. Note that the United States of America has never had, up to this writing, a woman president. Let that sink in.

Is Elfin a Place or a State of Mind?

     Most people think of Elfin and Faerie as places that are physical, in a way, while still being of an etheric nature. Physical but otherworldly, in a parallel dimension that one can step into if one can find the portal, just as one could step across the border from their own country into another. And this idea is certainly reinforced and, in many ways, prompted by various stories about elfae folk and our realms in legend, lore, myth and fiction.

     The ancient Celts and others believed that Faerie was the land of the dead (see Fairy Faith in the Celtic Countries by Walter Evans-Wentz and The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs: Avatars of Invisible Realms by Claude Lecouteux). After dying here, one took up life there in a more paradisiacal realm and when one died there one returned to this world again. Faerie and Elfin were more dreamlike in that way, which is to say that, just like dreams when one is dreaming, it all is very real, only potentially more fantastic.

     If that is the case then the portal to Faerie would be death in most cases, although there are exceptions to this on both sides of the equation as is evidenced in this world by a belief in ghosts or the appearance of a loved one who has just died prior to passing over and the idea of near-death experience where one goes into or approaches the other world but then returns. Plus, there is the fact that those who have died can still appear in our dreams, although often in altered bodies that while not resembling their earthly appearance are still clearly those individuals manifesting in the Dreamtime.

     Of course, not everyone who dies would go to Faerie. Only those of elfae inclination and nature and association would do so. Men would go to a world of their own as is indicated by the Norse belief in separate realms on the World Tree. Men, most likely, even in that more ethereal dreamlike world wouldn’t realize there was a Faerie at all. Men who deny the existence of we elfae folk in this world are unlikely to acknowledge us in that one either. In their dream world, we don’t exist.

     Our concern here, for the most part, however, is not about the part of Faerie that exists in the Between (see our book Beyond Death: The Elfin Book of the Dead. Ascending towards the Faerie Realms through Progressive Incarnations), but about manifesting Elfin and Faerie in this world, which is, in that sense, the portal to living in Faerie in that other world. For it is those who manifest as elfae folk in this world, especially those who have the courage to do so somewhat openly, who are surely bound for Faerie and Elfin when they pass into the otherworldly dream realms.

     And in this world, this more material realm, Elfin and Faerie do not exist (as yet or currently) as permanent stationary places, as say Japan exists or France. But then even those countries and, in fact, every other, have changed their boundaries from time to time through history and in the long run it is not the place that makes the country but the people and their culture. If we are to believe the ancient tales of our people, Ireland and the British Isles and Western France where once ours but, for the most part, passed from our hands long ago.

     Thus, for us Silver Elves, Elfin and Faerie are primarily states of being and consciousness that exist in potential in many places, particularly in Nature, but manifest prominently wherever we are expressing our elvish natures. The magical realms are far more fluid, and much like Nirvana is not a permanent place but exists as we can achieve the state of mind to do so. Think of Faerie and Elfin not as countries, although there are surely those who wish that they were countries, but rather like ships or even buses on or in which elfae folk live. The ship may be docked or the bus parked in a particular spot but they can also move about and wherever the elfae move, there also Faerie/Elfin manifests. If the ship sinks or the bus dies, we inhabit another, continuing to manifest Elfin through our lives and magic.

     Therefore, wherever we elfae folk go or abide there goes our spirits as well and there manifests Elfin/Faerie expressed outwardly by the radiance of our inner elvish being. We could, theoretically, buy land and call that Elfin but when we passed from this world, we would still be taking most of our entourage of spirits with us and that land may or may not pass into the hands elfae who would continue to manifest Elfin there, which is to say here in the material realm. And inevitably in the vast realms of time, that land would surely return to Nature and eventually into the Universe, which is to say the Void, anyway. And we elfae folk, wherever we might be, would continue on shining, as best we are able, as we manifest our beloved Elfin.

Many Kindred have asked us what is “The Elven Way.” Although we have written books on it (see our book The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones), here below is our short definition:

Short definition of “The Elven Way” by The Silver Elves

“The Elven Way is the spiritual path of the Elves. It is not a religion. While all elves are free to pursue whatever spiritual path they desire, or not as the case may be, The Silver Elves are magicians and follow no particular religious dogma. We do however believe in all the Gods and Goddesses, (also Santa Claus [to whom we’re related], the tooth fairy [distant cousins] and the Easter or Ostara Bunny [no relation]) and try to treat them all with due respect. The Elven Way promotes the principles of Fairness, that is to say both Justice, Elegance and Equal Opportunity and Courtesy that is respectful in its interactions and attitude toward all beings, great or small. We understand the world as a magical or miraculous phenomena, and that all beings, by pursuing their own true path, will become whomever they truly desire to be. Our path is that of Love and Magic and we share our way with all sincerely interested individuals.”

     “To remind us ever of the need to rise up and lift our others with us, to have compassion for others even those who oppose us, to endeavor to understand the true natures and motivations not only of ours’elves but all others, the Shining Ones send us Sages who appear in many forms, in nearly all cultures and speak though various social and religious philosophies encouraging us to strive toward the light, to seek ever the good of all, and to further spiritual evolution in all that we do. We elves call this the Way of the Fair or The Elven Way. The Path is never-ending, the Way is ever before us, the Choice is always now, and we are eternally evolving. This is the Elven Way. The enculturation and other protections that shield the normal folk from the realization of other dimensions are lifted when the elf steps upon the path and begins to tread the Elven Way. The Elven Way gives our lives meaning and purpose. We come to understand who we truly are, that is that we are spirits evolving and we establish a purpose in our lives, which generally might be expressed as aiding ours’elves and all others to fulfill ours’elves perfectly. That is to say, we become who are truly are, which is who we truly desire to be. Remember, we ever wish to be our own true s’elves as perfectly as possible, which means among other things to be happy and successful forever, to live Happily Ever After.”

Many Elven Blessings, Dear Kindred! 

Have we Elven lost touch with our Faerie heritage?

” . . . our heritage has always existed within us. And every time we elves see or read something that is truly elven or faerie, we recognize it instinctually. In fact, it is that phenomenon that lead many elfae to an awakening in the first place, for Tolkien and his works, as well as many other works of fiction and art, have stirred something deep within us and ignited that long awaited moment of realization. It was something that had been hidden within us by our own magic ages ago, knowing that the day (or night quite often) would come when we would rise again as the elfae peoples that we are and, in doing so, recreate our culture upon the Earth and among the Stars as we’ve ever been destined to do.”

     Well, how do we answer this question. On the surface, it seems rather obvious. We cannot help but have lost touch with our Faerie heritage in as much as our vibrant peoples and cultures were overrun by more aggressive peoples, the iron wielding peoples, which surely resulted in the tales of our aversion to iron. Few of us these days can say that we were raised to be ours’elves in an elvish culture. Some can, to be sure, but most of us, not so much. Most of us were raised among the Mannish cultures where you were supposed to live up to your parents expectations of you, become whatever they envisioned you to be and accepted whatever god or belief and lifestyle that they deemed appropriate. Of course, being elfae folk, such dark magic spells didn’t work on us or not for long anyway. And many of our parents being elfae thems’elves but not knowing it, often out of love tolerated our individual choices that, none the less, seemed weird to them. They warned us about the dangers of opposing the normals, but we did not listen. Or really, we listened, we just didn’t heed them.

And, we also have to account for the fact that much of the legends and lore about us, and certainly the tales of fiction that are usually based upon that lore, are mostly made up by others — and not elfae others but the others of Mankind. What if every story about you came from what other people experienced of you and were based upon their particular point of view, imagination and prejudices and you had no sense of your own s’elf at all. What would you be then if you believed them?

Over time, our people have been diminished in the minds of Mankind from being the bright and shining folk we were and are to wee little fairies with wings flitting about like insects with humanoid bodies and short little gnomes positioned on lawns. And even the dwarves who were once counted among the giants and dark elves have become portrayed as shortened beings as well.

Even the Celts, whom we Silver Elves relate to as being elfae beings, have been set among mere Men in the minds of the normal folk. This being so even though the Celts were related to the Egyptian Queen/Princess Scotia and related through marriage ties to the Scythian peoples who are generally deemed to be the source of the legends of Doaine Sidhe and the Tuatha de Danann (see De Vere The Dragon Legacy and Gardner The Realm of the Ring Lords). Of course, this is mostly because the Celts are a historical people, whereas the Doaine Sidhe and the Tuatha de Danann are seen as mythological peoples even though the Scythian folk, who were once regarded as being merely legendary folk, have been proven to be historical folk as well. Mankind insists on relegating we elfae to being mythological folk, despite our clear manifestation in the world. And they disregard all evidence of our actual being, such as us telling to their faces that we are elves and faeries.

We elfae have gone in the minds of Men from being super-natural and super-human folk, to being wee little beings, still of a somewhat supernatural albeit diminished nature, to being non-existent, which is, of course, mere wishful thinking upon the part of Men. And that is one wish that we elfae folk simply refuse to grant them.

So, it is no wonder that we have lost touch, to a certain degree, with our elfae heritage since most of us were forced to be raised among Men and the normal folk and what did come down to us as our heritage was often distorted and made us into cutesy beings that many of our kind hate. Well, we don’t hate the little flower faires and lawn gnomes and so forth, not at all. We quite love them, really. But most of us are rather disinclined to be considered cute, ours’elves.

On the other hand, our heritage has always existed within us. And every time we elves see or read something that is truly elven or faerie, we recognize it instinctually. In fact, it is that phenomenon that lead many elfae to an awakening in the first place, for Tolkien and his works, as well as many other works of fiction and art, have stirred something deep within us and ignited that long awaited moment of realization. “2.1. FLOWERS OF FAERIE, RAE DO.”

“The Flowers of Faerie are like Faerie Food. If you inhale the flowers of Faerie you will be transformed and, more than likely, you will have Faerie in your soul forever. In Hope Mirrlees’ novel Lud-in-the Mist, consuming the Flowers of Faerie made one wish to dance and sing and shout with joy and run off into the wilds of Faerie. Such happiness is quite understandable and acceptable among we elfae folk but to the normal people it seems as though one has gone insane for being so joyous. They will look askance at you and wonder whether you are all there or if you are, indeed, ‘off with the faeries’.”

“If you receive the Flowers of Faerie in response to a question posed to the oracle, then know that something will come into your life that will give you a bit of ecstatic joy. More than that, this oracle says you should experience your delight fully. You don’t need to hide it and you don’t need to be concerned about what other people may think. You are not one of them, and if you ever were, you are not of that world anymore. You are now a part of Faerie and shall ever after be. You are developing a new and greater understanding of your life, the world and your place in it. Once you really see and understand, you cannot go back. Isn’t that wonderful? Knowledge and experience master ignorance. You can’t unknow your new found understanding.”

The Sixth and Seventh Stages of Awakening upon The Elven Way: Acclimation and Actualization

“In the stage of Acclimation: We now live in Elfin as a part of Faerie even while we still travel the worlds of Men. For this is our quest. This is our mission. This is our duty sworn voluntarily. This is the adventure we imagined and hungered for and it is here. We may not have found the wardrobe when we were children or the genie’s lamp in a cave, nor did a wizard necessarily come to take us off on an adventure. But the elves came, and smiled and hugged us and embraced us as their own, because, beloved, we are one of them, as you are one of us. . . . And in the stage of Actualization: So, make your magic real, beloved. Live your elfin life either openly, if you dare, or in secret. But when we make it real in our life and therefore in the lives of those around us, then Elfin shall manifest upon the Earth just as much as we are able to Actualize it in our own lives and surroundings. And from there it will spread like ivy growing up the sides of the buildings of the world.”

The Sixth Step or Stage of Elven Awakening is Acclimation

The sixth stage or step upon the Elven Way is very similar to, one might even say a higher version of, the fourth stage of Attunement. We call this sixth step or stage “Acclimation” for here one becomes used to living in the Elfin and Faerie realms of one’s perceptual reality, while still seeing and understanding that the normal folk perceive the world differently. While in the stage of Attunement one stands between the worlds; in Acclimation one is living on the very edge and boundary of Elfin and the Faerie realms but still effected by and able to affect the world that has been created by the mental constructs, or magic, of the dominant race upon the planet. They no longer have any power over our magic, our consciousness and we have ceased to doubt and embrace our elfae lives completely. While they may harm us physically, their dark magics no longer hold any sway over us. We are not deceived by their insistence that the world be a certain way, and we see the world as it is as energy taking various forms in order to experience life and to individuate. We see elves, faeries, pixies, brownies and all sorts of spirits all about us in living beings who may not be entirely awakened but are still fae from our point of view and experience.

     This is not to say that we insist others see the world as we do. We may see the fae-ness of others but, if they insist they are something else, usually of the race of Man, we are compelled by our own magics to accept that this is their desire for themselves. In our realms, you are whatever you wish to be, or become it in time; especially when you inform that belief and wish with action. And if they wish to be mundane men and women, who are we to say otherwise? Still, it doesn’t hurt to suggest their fae heritage to them from time-to-time. Usually, we do this very lightly, almost as if joking. “You look like an elf to us,” we might say. Or we may inform someone who seems like they are one of our kind, who appears in our elf sight as one of us, that, “We’re elves,” and see how they respond. Quite often they’ll reply, “I’m a faerie,” or gnome or whatever. Of course, they may just be playing along but then, that’s what elfae folk do, isn’t it! And they may not be ready to step completely upon the elven path, but all come to it, if they do, in their own time. 

     Some of these folks have had a light Awakening. They are at the place of Attunement, standing between the worlds, living in both realms at the same time and most likely still heavily affected by the world that surrounds them. When they come to the point of Acclimation, if they do so in this lifetime, the preponderance of magic will shift. Elfin and Faerie will hold sway in their lives and the world of the mundane will be but a somewhat necessary inconvenience … like cleaning the toilet.

     As we Acclimate to Faerie, the world opens up. The possibilities of our lives become wider but then the potential for what may happen is broader as well. Alas, the world is not less dangerous for having orcs and gremlins in it. But then, they were always there, just disguising themselves as men and women. And now we can see them for whom they truly are. We can see them coming usually, unless their glamor is very powerful, and we are not fooled, although we sometimes let them continue in their mistaken impression that we do not recognize them. 

     But, as we said, elfae folk of the Seelie sort are more evident as well and we have allies everywhere. Our magic goes forth and weaves its way into the warp and waft of the great tapestry of Elfin and is strengthened thereby. We now live in Elfin as a part of Faerie even while we still travel the worlds of Men. For this is our quest. This is our mission. This is our duty sworn voluntarily. This is the adventure we imagined and hungered for and it is here. But the elves came, and smiled and hugged us and embraced us as their own, because, beloved, we are one of them, as you are one of us.

The Seventh Stage or Step in Elven Awakening is Actualization

The seventh step upon the Elven Way is Actualization and this stage includes all the other stages within it. We might call it the Master Stage, for it shows mastery of all the other stages functioning as one and it reveals Adeptship in one’s interaction with ones’elf, one’s others and the world around one. 

     While all elves are creative individuals, as are all elfae beings in general, at this stage one clearly and quite confidently steps into the role of the creator of elvish culture and even more than that takes part in the Actualization of Elfin upon the Earth. In this stage, you make Elfin real through your own life by an act, or really acts, of magic. It becomes ‘fait accompli.’ Elfin manifest through our lives and our beings. 

     One does not cease to follow the other steps upon achieving this stage. One continues to Awaken and to increase one’s understanding of one’s elfae being, becoming ever more conscious of the true protean nature of reality and the Universe and understanding that all form is transitory and thus, in that way, illusionary. But being the magic wielders that we are, being enchanters and increasingly becoming masters of glamorye, we understand now that we are free to create the world as we envision it to be and use our magic to make it so. We are no longer bound by the enculturation of the world. Nor do the threats and insinuations of those who preach this or that faith affect us. We know who we are and our elfae being is not dependent upon the beliefs of others but rather upon our own faith in ours’elves and our magic. 

     Naturally, we continue our Association with our kindred. Even more so now since, usually at this stage, one has one or more intimate kindred with whom one associates upon a regular basis. What is Elfin without our elfin friends? In fact, one could say that Elfin is all about friends and family. 

     Our efforts to refine ours’elves as individuals, to increase our power and abilities on all levels, to Activate our energies in every way, continues as well. There is no end to our inner potentiality and the more Activated we become, which is to say the more powerful we become, the more we are able to interact with others and the world in an effective fashion. We elves are, after all, enchanters first and foremost and our ability to enchant becomes greater and more subtle and elegant in our enchantments. We become Charmers, for sure. We develop charisma to a certain degree and again, this is a continuing process. One never ceases to improve when one makes a concerted effort to do so.

     And our ability to see the Faerie worlds around us increases as well. We are not only Attuned to the realms of Elfin and Faerie, but we are quite intentionally and willfully creating them. And yet, this willful activity comes quite naturally. It requires no effort from us save the daily effort to lead and improve our lives and the lives of those around us and we need to do nothing more than be our own true s’elves as best we may. We need not grunt and tense our bowels and furrow our brows as many young magicians do endeavoring to force their will upon the world. We need but be the wondrous elfae folk that we are and the world is enchanted by us and yields willingly to our wishes. The Faerie Circle spins about and we are part of the dance. Bright Elfin sings to us and we sing along with it and sometimes we find it is singing our song. 

     It is true that not all of us are drawn to the stage of Annunciation, at least as far as declaring one’s elfae being to the world and living it openly. And yet, at this seventh stage of Actualization, the way we live, even if we keep our elven nature secret from some folks, is an Annunciation of our elfae being. We are living our magic and making Elfin real in the normal world through our lives and while we may not announce we are elves or faerie folk to the normals around us, they will notice that there is something different about us. In a nice way really and, in fact, that is the great difference. While nearly everyone else in their world is complaining and jockeying for social position and secretly undermining each other while pretending to be best friends forever, we can be relied upon. Our word is our bond and we keep our promises and while we may seem crazy to some folks, it is a nice, eccentric and delightful crazy that interrupts their dull day-to-day lives with something different and sometimes mildly astonishing. We loosen their girdles just a bit and honestly, it is a relief to them, although they won’t always admit it. Although, they often tell us we are daring and dancing like they’d never dare to do, and we thank them and smile pleasantly and tell them they may be more daring than they realize. 

     In a sense, we are no longer Acclimating to Elfin at this stage. We now fit in perfectly and are not in conflict with Elfin at all. It is home. But Faerie? Well, Faerie is vast and can be dangerous. Even more dangerous than the normal world, for the possibilities are near endless and fantastic, so getting used to that fact can still take some time. It is ever surprising and there are always new things to learn. There is ever more to Faerie. More to learn, more to see, more to do and since we are manifesting Elfin in the material world, Faerie naturally starts to spill over into that world. Unusual things may happen, but then we are magic wielders and our wards are spinning, our sigils of protection hang upon our walls, our doors and windows are sealed with salt against wicked magics, including the dark magic of the normal world that seeks to absorb us into it and make us conform, and we are safe, relatively speaking from most of the dangers of those worlds. Since, it is good to be ever cautious and aware. 

     So, make your magic real, beloved. Live your elfin life either openly, if you dare, or in secret. But when we make it real in our life and therefore in the lives of those around us, then Elfin shall manifest upon the Earth just as much as we are able to Actualize it in our own lives and surroundings. And from there it will spread like ivy growing up the sides of the buildings of the world.
