We Silver Elves are so very pleased to announce the publication of our newest book Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic: Using Art-Making for Evoking Elfin Magic and Living the Elven Way. In this book, we share with you many of our favorite magical elven art projects that we have enjoyed doing in the last 40+ years and give you guidance and detailed instructions for creating your own and using them in your magic, along with over 100 photos to demonstrate the art processes. Also, this is a book of elven spells and enchantment magic, with elven rhyming magical spells (200 in total) that you may use in rituals to empower your art and magic with each magical item and creative project.

We include our magical art processes from faerie altered clothing and making faerie houses to creating magical elf stones and ritual tools such as a Book of Shadows (or a Book of Twilight as we elves call them) and also a Scrapbook of Shadows, chalices, ally dolls, wands, canes, staffs, seaweed pod rattles, magic plates, elven warrior shields, wishing wheels, mojo bags, and elven witches brooms and magic spoons. We further have chapters on making elfin dream pillows, fairy dust and pixie powder, elven magical boxes or reliquaries, elven Mbuti, paintings, illuminated circles, magic soul cards, tarot decks, pan pipes, fantasy maps and even some of our favorite elven group-art games like elven notan and Elven Chess. We also have a chapter on spell crafting using the seven-pointed elven star. And in our final chapter, we share with you more about the Orb of Healing, which is a magical artifact that is at the center of our elven magick.

In Elven tradition, there is not quite the strict line between formally educated magic and hedgewitchery, or s’elf educated or street magic. Perhaps this is true in part because most magic wielders of these days have to be at least a bit (and usually quite a bit) s’elf educated, gaining our understanding though practice and sharing our knowledge with each other. People often ask us to tell them more about how we do our magic each day and to describe our rituals. There is no better way to understand our elfin magical practices than to study our art, how we make it and how we use it (except to come spend some time with us, of course). Our art and magic are intertwined, and we are sharing with you in this book a real “how to” glimpse into our magic and enchantment spell crafting through our elven creative process of art-making.

This is a book of magic — very practical magic that involves the creation of one’s magical tools, which include wands, staffs, rattles, crowns, hoods, robes and many other instruments of magic and, in this case in particular, of elven magic and enchantment. So it is only natural that we include spells in this book for all magical items that you can use in charging your instruments and tools. Of course, you can always make up your own or alter them as needed. However, the spell you use may vary with the purpose of the tool you are making. For instance, wands might be made for a variety of specific purposes. It is also possible that a wand would be an all-purpose or general purpose wand, like a doctor who is a general practitioner rather than a specialist, but it is also possible to have a wand for a specific purpose. In elven lore, usually magical tools, such as a ring of power, have a particular ability associated with them. The One Ring of Tolkien’s lore, for instance, gave the wearer the power of invisibility, although curiously, it did the opposite for Sauron and seemed to give him substance. Perhaps it related to the plane the individual wearing it was on. If the person was a regular material being, it would make them invisible, which is to say, less material, but if the person was a more etheric being, such as Sauron, it gave him power and form in the material world. Most magical items in magical lore are of this nature, seven league boots, invisibility cloaks and so on, each offering a specific power. So we offer you a variety of spells that reflect the usual uses of the magical item in question. (As you scroll down this page, you will see that we have given you a few examples of spells from the book).

You will notice that most of the spells in Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic are rhyming or chanting spells and might be called mantras, which is not to say that all mantras are rhymed, although most elven mantras/spells are. This is not only because we Silver Elves love making up little rhymes but also because traditionally spells are often rhymed. Rhymed enchantments are easy to remember and create a certain vibration and radiance in their rhyme, which is a certain magic all in itself and has a bit of a hypnotic or trance effect to it as well. So when doing the incantation, make it vibrant, let it hum or sing in your mind or as you resonant it out loud. Remember, the Universe is made of energy, vibrating at various frequencies. In vibrating your spell, you are attuning to Nature and the Universe. The frequency will depend upon your own voice that will make it perfectly suited to you, your nature and your specific enchantment.

Also, all of the 200 spells in this book are presented in both English and Arvyndase (the magical language of The Silver Elves), along with the pronunciation in Arvyndase. Using this elven language will increase the magic of the spell you are casting, but of course, your own intention and effort is what most effects the magic. We often use Arvyndase in our art-making, particularly writing our magic on our wands and staffs, in our books of shadows, and our magic traveling rocks, all of which are covered in Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic.

Often in books about magic, people talk of making wands by going to a tree, finding an appropriate branch, thanking the tree for its donation, sometimes asking it for permission first and intuiting the answer and so on and then cutting off the branch. In old stories of witchcraft, spells are often put together using an herbal concoction, so to speak, with the eye of newt (very popular apparently) and tail of salamander and so forth. We elves prefer found magic. We don’t go to the forest or nearby woods and cut a branch from a tree, rather we find a branch that has fallen or that we have otherwise come across and use as the basic part of our wands accepting it as a sort of gift from the Earth and the Universe, which is to say from the Divine Magic.

This, to us, is part of our Elven Hedgewitchery. The gifts of Nature are abundant and most of the magical items we create are gifts of Nature, or sometimes gifts from other folk, or most often a combination thereof. It is sometimes said that nothing in life is free, and yet these elves have all sorts of things that we have come by freely, without theft, mind you, that we use in our magical creations. Buttons come to us, pieces of jewelry (some of these broken but still usable for our art), clothes, cloth, ribbon, lace, embroidery thread and sewing thread, wire, string, cord, and all sort of things as you will discover as you explore this magical tome of elven art. The elven art, really, of making magic.

This is a book of Elven Hedgewitchery and as you will see upon reading it, it isn’t really about doing things exactly the way we have done them but about inspiring you, as much as possible, to look around your own elven home and the environment you live in and see what is easily, freely or inexpensively available to you so you may create your own elven art, magic pieces, clothes and other items to manifest Elfin in your own life and for your kindred, and in that way express your individual elfae nature.

Also, we encourage you to collect, collect, collect, especially those things that others have failed to see the value in but are still wonders to your eyes. We promise you, if you do this and use your magical collections to create enchanted art and elven fashion, more treasures will come to you, out of the blue and from the Mists of Faerie and the Twilight Realms of Elfin.

“Elf witches are much like other witches, except instead of attempting to make particular things happen as we desire, we seek to assist Nature to fulfill Destiny perfectly. For that is what we truly desire, anyway.” —The Silver Elves
