Why the Faeries Have Not Now All Gone Due to the Encroachment of Cities

We much prefer Nature, but we make do and will continue to do so until we once again have manifested Elfin and Faerie upon this planet and, in time,
out in space.”

There is the idea that with the encroachment of Mankind and of towns and cities, which men mistakenly consider civilization, that we elfae folk and fair folk are all now dead or departed, perhaps to the last remaining wild places and wilderness areas that still exist. This goes along with the idea that is sometimes found in fantasy novels that the magic is now all gone or nearly so. That once the world was a place of magic but it has now left, having been chased off or killed off, presumably by science making this into a mundane and magic-less world, unless you consider science and technology magic, which we Silver Elves do.

And yet, it should be quite clear that while we elfae folk do tend to enjoy and love Nature and the wilds that we are also rather fond of each other, which usually means towns, cities, etc. Not in and of thems’elves. We are seldom fond of cities for their own sake. But they do give us a chance to find and interact with each other and while most of us would retreat to a more rural life closer to Nature if we could, the vast majority of us, as yet, are unable to do so at this time in our evolution. And even then, we would generally only do so once we have found our significant otherkin.

In that way, we are rather like the trees and birds. Many of them still live in the wild but others have adapted to living in towns and cities. It is a somewhat dangerous life for trees in a city because you never know when some man might decide to cut you down. But really, the same is true of the trees in the wild, which is why we have so few wild areas left anymore and most of our great forests are gone and those that are left are fast dwindling, again at the hands of men.

And birds also, or some of them, at least, have adapted to city and town life. We listen to the birds every day and, of course, say hello to them when we take our walks about our neighborhood as well as greeting the trees, the geckos, lizards, dogs and every other creature we come across. We are friendly elves.

The fact that we elfae, or many, even most of us, have adapted to urban life is reflected in novels that are identified as Urban Fantasy such as Charles DeLint and others write. It is also reflected quite often in what is known as Magical Realism, as reflected by Alice Hoffman’s Practical Magic series. Our own novel of modern elven, The Elves of Lyndarys, takes place mostly out in the countryside but, even then, the characters sometimes go to the local town or to the city. Elves like those in Tolkien’s works that live isolated in places like Rivendell or Lothlorien would be able to do so because they have an organic community that they rely upon. Most of we elfae in the modern world have lost our tribes through the ages. They were persecuted out of existence or forcibly absorbed into the cultures of men. So, for us, finding our kindred in a world that is often hostile to the notion of our identity and sometimes our very existence naturally leads us to those places where others of our kind may be found and that is most often towns and cities or gatherings out in the countryside or wild areas organized by those from the towns and cities.

First, we find each other. Then, perhaps, if we can, we retreat from the world.

But the point is that we incarnated elfae are not gone from the world. Even those more ethereal faeries that ‘fairy seers’ talk about living in trees here and there, are not gone from the world either, apparently. There are all those gardens that they can abide in, at least according to the lore and the accounts of those psychics who claim to see them.

For our own part, we Silver Elves consider the butterflies, dragonflies, moths and other such winged beings to be faeries and we saw two monarchs a week ago just a block over. We know most of those who ‘see’ faeries tell us that they are little people with wings, while at the same time usually denying our essential elfinness, but we think that most likely they are just anthropomorphizing faeries and do not understand we elfae are not all humanoid in appearance. Some of us are, surely, but the vast majority of elfae kind most probably are not.

The fact is that the cities haven’t driven us away. Nor has science gotten rid of us either. Who Are the True Elves?

. . . . if you dedicate your life and magic to being the elfae that you inwardly know yours’elf to be, then there is nothing more that you need do. For none can be truer elves than those who are true to their own s’elves and to Elfin.

     We encountered a post on Facebook that stated: “The Quendi are the true elves as opposed to those elfin who have become like men and ape in their ways.” Quendi, of course, is from Tolkien’s writings and is often used as a synonym for the world Eldar and both are translated as elves. However, they are often distinguished from the Moriquendi, or Dark Elves, who in Tolkien’s mythology never saw the light of Valinor as the Quendi did. Thus, we might say that the Moriquendi were dark elves, not because they were evil, but because they were, in a sense, more attuned to the material world, as opposed to the more ‘spiritual’ or ethereal worlds, the worlds of light that the Quendi had experienced and returned to.

     First, we should remind our readers that we Silver Elves are not experts on Tolkien’s lore, even though we have read quite a bit of his work. Using the word scholar in reference to us, which has been done from time to time, is probably a bit of a hyperbole, and while some of us Silver Elves might be thought of as scholars in reference to certain fields of study, we certainly are not qualified to be considered scholars of Tolkien’s works. Although, we are aware that Tolkien had a variety of elven types beyond the Quendi and Moriquendi, such as the Avari, who declined to return to Valinor, and were also called the ‘refusers’; the Úmanyar who began the journey to Valinor but didn’t complete it; and the Nandor, who didn’t even dare to cross the ‘Misty Mountains’, with various sub-divisions thereof.

     When we observe our elvish world as it exists in our lives, we can see a reflection of all this in those who consider thems’elves to be ‘high elves’ and ‘star seeds’ who are rather like the Quendi in that way and often look upon thems’elves as being spiritually superior to those of us who are lesser elfin, or everyday elves, or downhome elves, or down to earth elfae as we Silver Elves are. In that same way, we Silver Elves have ever been more inclined toward being hedge-witches than a part of any formal coven or tradition of witchcraft.

     At the same time, we have also encountered this idea that some elves are true elves and others not so much, among those who assert that they are genetically elven, or elven by family lineage, while we continue to express the opinion that what makes a person an elf or faerie or whatever has to do with their spirit and magic. This is to say, they wish to be elfae, they live their lives as elfae, and thus they are, by manifesting acts of magic, elfin. Being elfin is what makes one elfin. Which doesn’t discount the notion that people could be genetically descended from the Sidhe or other fae, but it doesn’t exclude others who have chosen to reincarnate in a different genetic lineage in this lifetime. Curiously, this view of ours is more spiritual and magical in nature, while the genetic argument is more materially oriented, in contrast to those who see thems’elves as starseeds who seem more inclined toward our view in that way.

     There are also those who have taken exception to our use of the word ‘we’ when we write, thinking we are using it as the ‘royal’ we, and thus putting ours’elves up as ‘high elves’ or true elves over those lesser elves. But, in fact, since all elfae folk are royal beings, we could, anyone of us, legitimately, use the ‘royal’ we. However, the reality is that there are more than one of us Silver Elves, thus when we use that pronoun we are doing so in its traditional form of being the ‘plural’ version of I.

     Simultaneously, unlike most modern elfae folk and many of our ancestors through the centuries we expect, we Silver Elves are not trying to leave or abandon the material realm or Earth dimension and flee to Faerie or Elfland or Valinor. Although we surely understand and sympathize with those who wish to do so. This world is crazy with its wars and conflicts and global climate change and the prejudices people hold for other peoples and the rampant exploitation of Nature. It is almost as if we were living in Middle-earth.

     And yet, we are still of a mind that it is our duty and mission to manifest here as best we may. To establish Elfin upon the Earth and transform the planet back into the paradise it was always meant to be. In that way, we are rather like Tolkien’s Avari elves. We are somewhat hardheaded that way. We refuse to give up. Although, we might also be like the Nando, simply too afraid of the unknown to try. Either way, we are here until Fate and Destiny and Nature remove us. And then, surely, if possible, we will come back again. We are hardheaded that way.

     However, we don’t look upon our point of view as being inherently superior to others. It is just the way we have chosen. And all elves, who truly strive to express their elfin natures are true elves as far as we are concerned.

     It is true that some individuals of our kindred are more inclined to mimic Man and their kind and accept their values and ways of being. And it is possible that they will fade from Elfin and Faerie in time and join Men as one of their own. But that is only if that is what is truly in their hearts. And surely all of us have to make compromises to live in this world. That’s just the way it is. But still, beloved, if you are true to Elfin and Faerie in your heart and soul, they will never forget you. And if you dedicate your life and magic to being the elfae that you inwardly know yours’elf to be, then there is nothing more that you need do. For none can be truer elves than those who are true to their own s’elves and to Elfin.

This book is written from an elven perspective, and you will find reading it to be helpful to use as a magical guide if you: 1.) already know your totem animal or familiar and wish to find out more about what magical powers they bring you; 2.) want to find out who/what your totem animal is and what/how this animal is influencing your life; 3.) wish to use this book as an oracle reading to find out what animal energy has come to you in your life in the past or is needed in the present and future for healing and success; 4.) wish to understand the magical meaning of an animal dream symbol that you have experienced; or 5.) would like to understand the meaning and magic in your life of an animal you have encountered other than your familiar.

While animals can be differentiated in a number of ways, we have divided them here in this book into six basic groups or classes of animals in keeping with the most accepted scientific differentiation. These are Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Invertebrates, and Fish. To these, we have also added an entire chapter of numerous Mythical animals for several reasons. First, as elfae folk we love the number seven. It is a particularly magical number to us but then all numbers are magical in their own way. Also, while Mythical animals are not known to exist as physical creatures upon the Earth, although some of us still hold that they may still exist, many elfae have mythical animals as totems, just as Scotland has the unicorn as its national animal and Thailand the Garuda bird.

There are oracles for over 250 animals in this book. You will find that we have included in many of the animal families further subdivisions. Thus, if your totem is a bear, or you receive bear as a response to an inquiry of the oracle, you will notice that within the section on bears there are different species of bears. For instance, there are grizzly bears and brown bears and black bears and polar bears and so on, each with their variation upon the main theme of bear energy and symbology. Just as in our elfae world, there are elves, faeries, pixies, brownies, gnomes and other fae beings. But, this further sub-division takes place in this book more for the mammals than for fish, insects, etc. because the vast majority of our readers will have mammals as their totems.

The directions for using this book as an oracle guide are clearly written in the introduction of the book and further assistance is given throughout the book to make it easy. So it will be fun for you to use! All you will need to cast an oracle to read from this book will be a regular playing deck of cards and a few dice (this is also explained in the book).

Our link to animal totems is both ancient and quite powerful and surely extends back into prehistory and our elven ancestors in more shamanistic times. For we elfae folk, the future is in many ways more important than the past. Our heritage is important to us, surely, and we love much of the ancient lore in as much as it is a true reflection of our elvish beings and culture. However, we are ever striving through the present to step into the future, to become those elfae spirits we feel ours’elves to be, aspire toward being, feel destined to be and act in such ways as to manifest in reality and through magic our true s’elves actuating our potential and manifesting Elfin and Faerie upon the Earth. ITALIAN WOLVES

“These wolves can be found living in the alps of northern Italy, in Switzerland and southwestern France. They are integral to the Italian culture, featuring as the wolves who in legend took part of the founding of Rome. They are also the national animal of Italy. These wolves are different from the common European wolf. They tend to be smaller and have teeth that are more like those of a dog or a golden jackal. However, they are genetically different from other wolves and dogs. These are a unique folk and, in that sense, very elvish.”

“If you have this wolf folk as your totem animal then know that you are a special sort of elfae being, both like and unlike others of our kind. You are something special. However, what constitutes that specialness may not be clear. There is something ancient in your being and you need to look to the ancients and the ancestors to truly understand. Yours is the old magic, the ancient magic, the magic that was before history.”

If you get this as an oracle:

“Simply, be your own s’elf. Some people may think you are like everyone else but they are wrong. But you don’t need to point that out to them. Let them think what they will. Inwardly, know that you are special and if some people feel a bit uneasy around you because they feel you are different but can’t quite figure out how, soothe them and give them a smile and go on your way. Look to the ancients and the ancient magic to help you resolve the situation you are asking about. Old magic, folk magic, what many consider superstitious practices, passed on to you by your parents or grandparents, may serve you well here.”

POLAR BEAR

“While the Polar Bear is kin to the Brown Bear, it is actually the largest existent bear species today, as well as, the largest carnivore on land. However, the Polar Bear, unlike other bears, is a marine mammal and listed in that way along with seals, dolphins, whales, porpoises and other mammals that survive along and upon the seas. This should include fishermen and merchant marines as far as we elves are concerned. Also, Polar Bears survive in a very narrow and cold ecological niche and this, besides their white fur, makes them rather special as bears who have adapted to living fulltime among the ice and snow. Theirs is a magic that is apart from the normal world. They survive where few others can and that is great magic, indeed. If this is your totem than you can do this as well.”

If you get this as an oracle:

“Then the solution to the question you asked is to find a niche where your special abilities and talents will be successful and productive. You don’t need to fit into the world at large, you just need to find a corner of the world, even if it is a narrow corner, a small space where you can thrive and where your particular work, magic or style will be appreciated. Also, if you must be in the world, take on some of the jobs no one else wishes to do and master them. In this way, you will become indispensable.”

PELICANS, HERONS, HAMMERKOPS, SPOONBILLS, SHOE-BILL STOCKS AND IBISES

“These are medium to large water birds. Their nostrils have evolved into small slits, so they need to breathe through their mouths (mouth breathers). They have webbed toes. They nest in colonies but are monogamous in individual association. Their young, like those of humans, are born naked and helpless and need feeding and care until fledged. Ibises have long been associated with magic and mystery. Pelicans are often seen to be humble and generous. They do not ‘hog’ their food or eat more than they need. Herons are frequently seen as indicating prosperity. Spoonbills can indicate strength and freedom and the ability to sweep obstacles out of their way. Some African tribes saw the Hammerkop as being a ‘lighting bird’ bringing revelation. Shoebill Stocks are often seen as having a supernatural ability to detect danger and the power and purity to overcome evil.”

“If this is your totem, then you are surely a magical wielder and/or a mystic of some sort. That leads some people to believe you are not as intelligent as they are or as you really are, because your belief in and experience with the supernatural is beyond their understanding. You, naturally, ignore them and pay no heed to their ignorance.”

“Use your magic for the good. Overcome evil, create prosperity for yours’elf and others and then good luck will come to you and you will fall under the protection of the Shining Ones. It may seem like this situation calls for you to do something material but really magic and spells are the key to succeeding here.”

CHIMERA

“The Chimera is a being that is usually depicted as having the body of a lion with the head of a goat protruding from its back, and its tail often ends with a snake’s head. Because of this the term chimera has come to be used to designate any mythical or fictional creature with its parts taken from a variety of animals. By extension, from that idea, it is used to describe anything that is made of disparate parts, or anything that is generally accorded to be outlandishly imaginative, to be implausible or, at the same time, dazzling in its contradictions or incongruities.”

“If this is your totem, then you are a puzzle to most people. You have a wide range of varied experiences, have probably lived in different cultures all over the place and are simply hard to define or categorize. You probably seem strange to them but fascinating at the same time. If you are of elfae being, you are most likely a combination of myriad fae types, some of which may seem contradictory.”

If you get this as an oracle:

“You are probably going to have to patch together a number of different things to make this situation work. This is a jerry-rig situation and the solution is not to be found in a single act or a simple series of actions but in trying a number of different things and seeing which work and which don’t and continuing on with those that do, which in themselves may prove to be quite disparate. But if you wish to succeed here, that’s what it takes. And, remember, the tried and true just isn’t going to work in these circumstances. You will be forced to think ‘out of the box’ if you wish to resolve this situation.”

Do the Elves Say that Trees Have Souls?

“. . . . And of our kindred the trees, we elfae have no doubt that they sense us, and in turn we certainly have affectionate and appreciative feelings for them. Surely, they feel our love as well.”

Many religious sorts, but not all, are of the opinion that only human beings have souls. So, from that point of view, trees would not have souls, neither would cats, dogs or any other creature other than human beings, although apparently, usually according to these same people, humans can sell their souls to obtain great wealth and so forth. So from just such a perspective, while humans are born with souls, they don’t always keep them.

     We should say that we Silver Elves usually define soul differently than most other folks do. What most folks would refer to as their immortal soul, we’d call the immortal spirit. To us, soul has to do with our link to, association with, and ability to communicate with, principally through feeling and energetic vibration, everything and everyone else in the Universe. Therefore, the question here, if you asked in from our point of view, would be: Do trees have spirits?

     But let us first deal with this question in the way that it was asked of us as to whether trees have souls or not, keeping in mind our Silver Elves definition of soul. What we would have to ask ours’elves really, and what we are asking by this question is: Do trees feel? Do trees respond to other trees? Do they respond to their environment? Do they respond to things that are done to them by Mankind? And the answer that science has given us, based upon the evidence it has obtained in examining trees and other plants, and we surely can extend this to dogs, cats, and other creatures, is that they do ‘feel’ or react sensitively to each other and to their environmental circumstances. Some people might say that there is no mind involved here but then there is no mind exactly when one touches something hot and pulls back quickly. Feeling does not require mind although it does require a sort of nervous system.

     Do trees have spirit is another question. Spirit is our inner energy, which strives toward the fulfillment of some essentially Universal goals. The most essential of these is a drive toward immortality or, in its lowest manifestation, an urge to preserve one’s life, which trees have been found to do in their nurturing of seedlings with nutrients through their root systems. The other drive is a desire for happiness or success, which for a tree or plant would be growing, seeding and turning itself toward the light, on the one hand, and obtaining food and nutrients on the other.

     As spirit evolves it tends to individuate. From our Silver Elves point of view, the more individual and unique a person is, the more evolved they are as an individual spirit, as long as that uniqueness is harmonized within them. A conflicted spirit is not necessarily an evolved spirit, but it is surely evolving. Trees have spirit but it seems to be a quite serene spirit for the most part and while trees can be individual, they are not usually greatly so. Still, they are rather like yogis who mediate all the time. We elfae feel that trees may very well be quite advanced beings living their lives in deep communion and contemplation. 

     This idea of trees having spirits is brought out in the notions of dryads or tree spirits in Greek and other lore. But these spirits, rather like the idea that many people have concerning faeries, are often somewhat apart from their tree, taking care of it as one might tend a garden. On the other hand, Tolkien’s notion of the Ents, from our point of view, would indicate quite evolved tree spirits.

     Most of our ancient ancestors were animists. From their point of view all of life was imbued with soul and spirit. This would include not only the trees and plants and various animals, but also the rocks, the rivers and other things. If a rock fell on you without anyone throwing it or dislodging it, it was because the rock intended to fall on you. After them came the religious ones who thought deities caused everything and thus, from their point of view, if a rock fell on someone it was because the gods willed it to be so. Be careful when those young gods are throwing rocks or playing with wind or fire or in coconut trees.

     In modern times, we generally conceive of such events as accidents. Merely coincidences of happenstance, and even those who proclaim that they don’t believe in coincidences still generally believe in accidents.

     You can see the progression of belief somewhat in children. If a door accidently swings and hits a child, the child is likely to kick the door in response. Although, if the door was pushed by the wind, the child might still kick the door since there is no way to get back directly at that mean old wind. The same is true, in a sense, when people get so frustrated that they break dishes or punch walls. Neither the dish nor the wall is responsible for their frustration, but there is, alas, a pecking order in the world and when one can’t get back directly at those who thwart one, many, unfortunately, take it out on those who are not powerful enough or are unable to respond in kind.

     While we Silver Elves have also accepted the idea that accidents happen, just as we embrace the notion that magic happens, we do also think that we are soulfully connected to the Universe and that often accidents happen for a reason. We don’t blame a rock for dropping on us, but we are of a mind that its doing so is part of our fate and karma and the movement of the Universe overall and our place within it. In that sense, we take responsibility for the rock dropping on us. Our magic ultimately made it happen. Our fate drew the rock to us. 

     For, in our view, the Divine Magic lives in all of life and everything moves us to our eventual fulfillment and development as individual spirits. There is a certain amount of faith in that point of view. A faith that can sorely tested at times. But all this is to say that our actions/magics matter and we are ultimately responsible for all that we do. 

     Do rocks have souls? Maybe not, but they do experience vibrations, which is the beginning. However, we don’t think they feel much, but spirit still acts through them. And of our kindred the trees, we elfae have no doubt that they sense us, and in turn we certainly have affectionate and appreciative feelings for them. Surely, they feel our love as well.

“Were we once elementals? Surely, we were. We may well have been also fertilized eggs, that grew into a frog-like shape floating in a sort of aquatic environment of amniotic fluid and so on. We have developed as spirits and continue to do so. Growing more aware, more conscious, more intelligent, more experienced (Universal Street Smarts) and more magical as elfae beings. And as we live our lives consciously and intentionally as the elfae we truly are, we increase this magic and it’s power manifesting Elfin and Faerie upon the Earth and among the Stars as we were ever meant to do. And in doing so, evolve even more and more quickly. So, beloved, be your true elfae s’elf and help others to do the same, for we are on a great quest and adventure that extends through the lifetimes and throughout the Universe.”

If you read the esoteric teachings and theories of Blavatsky in The Secret Doctrine, vols. 1 & 2 (which is essentially formed from her interpretation of esoteric Buddhist lore), then the theory is that all beings that are currently incarnate and those that have evolved beyond physical manifestation for the most part into the realms of the Shining Ones, have progressed through every level of physical manifestation. Rather like that game that parents sometimes (or used before mobile video games) play with their young children on long road trips, called Animal, Vegetable and Mineral. This is to say that we, as spirit, in order to gain mastery over the physical plane, which is also to say master our ability to shape matter and incarnate within it in a conscious fashion, have and continue to go through the series of incarnations into various forms. Usually seen in a progressive fashion as first mineral, then vegetative, then animal developing into humanoid form and beyond that ethereal being with increasing consciousness and awareness. This is all theory, of course, but it is a theory that is not only rooted in the esoteric lore of Asian peoples but also very much reflected in the beliefs of Western peoples, and particularly to be found in faerie legend and lore.

Faerie folk are often accorded by lore to be nature spirits or associated with elementals of various sorts. Gnomes are said to be earth spirits or earth elementals. Undines (which are a type of water faerie like mermaids, naiads and nixies) are water elementals. Sylphs (which are a sort of faerie) are air elementals, although some people call them zephyrs. And salamanders (not sure how they got in there) are fire spirits although some magicians associate them with djinn (see Helping Yourself with White Witchcraft by Al. G. Manning). Having salamanders among these faerie spirits is rather like having various types of apples associated with the other elementals and then having an orange linked to fire.

For our own part, we Silver Elves don’t associate the elementals with earth, water, air and fire but rather with states of being, thus solid, liquid, gaseous and plasma (see our book The Elements of Elven Magic: A New View of Calling the Elementals Based Upon the Periodic Table of Elements), but that fits perfectly with our view that we are primarily spirits manifesting in humanoid bodies and are only temporarily physical beings evolving toward eventually becoming beings that manifest in bodies of light in a world of our creation that is very much like lucid dreaming. It is still an illusion (as Buddhist would define it) like the material world, but an illusion more of our own creation.

The Elements of Elven Magic:
A New View of Calling the Elementals Based Upon the Periodic Table of Elements

The idea that we elfae were or could still be more elemental in our being and that we may evolve through various levels of manifestation can also be seen in the legends of the Cait Sith or cat fae and the cù-sìth, singular, and coin-sìth, plural, who are faerie dogs. You will also note the various púca (pooka, phouka) that are shapeshifting fae and become dogs, cats, rabbits (see the 1950’s film Harvey with Jimmy Stewart) or whatever but seem to have a particular fondness, according to the lore, for being horses (see Faery in Shadow by C. J. Cherryh). Although, here we may also find Groot’s friend, the quite clever racoon being Rocket of comic book and movie fame.

As far as vegetative life, there are a number of trees that have been strongly associated with faerie folk and numerous herbs and plants as well, but there are also the wood nymphs, dryads and other tree and plant spirits that are faerie creatures that are associated with vegetable life. In modern times in science fiction and fantasy, we have Groot and Tolkien’s Ents as conscious tree spirits.

In terms of the mineral world, it is dwarves due to their caves that we find so powerfully associated with the rock, stone, crystal and gem world, but also trolls, who are sometimes said to turn into stone if exposed to light and mountain giants who are essentially rock people, which is to say mobile rocks. And in the superhero world we have The Thing, called Ben Grimm in his human form of the Fantastic Four.

For our own part, we Silver Elves have always seen all of life as being, each in their own way, conscious. Rocks may not have the same consciousness as we have obtained, but have their own sort of consciousness that will grow and evolve in time, just as ours did. All of life surely is imbued with the Divine Magic, in potential, and all of life is moving toward its perfected, which is to say, most magical state of being. We are not born ‘as is’ as some religious doctrines proclaim, live our lives then die and go to heaven or hell forever, but continually are evolving, learning and growing spirits.

Were we once elementals? Surely, we were. We may well have been also fertilized eggs, that grew into a frog-like shape floating in a sort of aquatic environment of amniotic fluid and so on. We have developed as spirits and continue to do so. Growing more aware, more conscious, more intelligent, more experienced (Universal Street Smarts) and more magical as elfae beings. And as we live our lives consciously and intentionally as the elfae we truly are, we increase this magic and it’s power manifesting Elfin and Faerie upon the Earth and among the Stars as we were ever meant to do. And in doing so, evolve even more and more quickly. So, beloved, be your true elfae s’elf and help others to do the same, for we are on a great quest and adventure that extends through the lifetimes and throughout the Universe.

Are we elves repelled by iron, once again?

“It occurs to us that while Men think we elfae are allergic to iron, it is, in fact, they who may really be allergic to Nature. Why else would they seek so desperately to retreat from it? To destroy Nature and build themselves a bubble of existence almost entirely removed from it. On the other hand, for we elfae folk, we fae or fey, iron is something we can take or leave but Nature, we cannot live without. Or surely, do not wish to do so.”

 

     Ancient lore (although not in every instance) and modern fiction about we elfae folk often posit the idea that we are repelled by iron or harmed by it or allergic to it, as is the idea sometimes put forth that vampires are repelled by garlic or the bible or the cross; or Superman is weakened by kryptonite, etc. We have written on this before in our book The Magical Realms of Elfin: Answers to Questions About Being an Elf and Following the Elven Path. However, this notion keeps popping up and we continue to evolve in our own thoughts and musing upon this matter. So here are some of our new considerations.

You can find this idea as a significant part of Nancy Baker’s novel Cold Hillside and it is also mentioned in Claude Lecouteux scholarly book The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs. Although in The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs it is extended from the notion that we are repelled by sharp objects, which the author then reasons to refer to iron. However, we might point out, as we have elsewhere, that we elfae are not generally inclined to like being poked or stabbed by sharp objects whatever their composition may be.

Once again, we feel a need to declare that we elfae in general are not weakened by iron the way Superman is by kryptonite (although we are told that there are some elfae who do have unpleasant physical reactions to iron). And it is certainly true that we are not all that inclined, in a general fashion, toward iron. We much prefer silver and gold when it comes to metals and naturally mercury fascinates us. But our objection to iron isn’t because we are weakened or repelled by it in an occult or magical sense, or that its touch burns us (unless it is very hot) but because we, as elfae folk, are much more inclined toward beauty than harshness and the smooth over the rough. We are repelled by iron in the same way, actually, that we are disinclined to wear polyester when we do not need to do so or go to churches and listen to someone sermons (or listen to sermons wherever we might be). We elfae almost always and as a general disposition prefer cotton, linen, silk and rayon over polyester, especially when it is woven into velvet.

Mankind and some of the traditionally Unseelie Folk (for instance some but not all orcs and gremlins) seem to prefer a rougher world, a world of steel (iron + carbon) and concrete that to our elfae senses seems dead. If they wish to protect a place they put barbed wire around it, whereas we would be more linked to surround our realms with thorny bushes rather than rusting steel. Our objection to iron really isn’t that we are somehow magically repelled by it but that it is inelegant and merely serves to further the sort of lifelessness that seems to delineate and dominate Man’s world.

We elfae, for the most part, prefer to surround ours’elves with living Nature, not the synthetic constructions of Man’s creations. Of course, in the modern world, we often have little choice but adapt to their preference for inanimate objects, but even then, we instill our magic into those empty vessels and make them our own. Yet still, we’d much prefer to live amidst vibrant Nature than the lifeless atmosphere that Men seem to prefer to surround themselves.

We understand, of course, that Men in general are preparing themselves for their idea of space travel, of living in space ships for ages surrounded by artificial everything. We expect that in time they will come to understand that taking Nature into space will prove far superior to living entirely in an artificial environment. The fact that in their preparation for abandoning the Earth for space (and we sincerely hope they come to their senses first) they seem determined to destroy everything on the Earth, is curious to us. For sadly it appears unlikely at times that they will even make it into space to the point where they can actually survive there without destroying themselves in the first place. And how will they survive in space if, in fact, they can’t survive on Earth? And what exactly is it they are running from? Not us surely, they don’t believe in us anymore. Certainly, it must be themselves.

It occurs to us that while Men think we elfae are allergic to iron, it is, in fact, they who may really be allergic to Nature. Why else would they seek so desperately to retreat from it? What are our Elven Instincts and How do we use them in our Elfin Magic?

“. . . . we elven do not ignore our feelings, and instead seek to understand the difference in our emotions and instinctive feelings. In doing this, we embrace the instinctive feelings related to our true inner Nature (our “Elven Instincts”) and are then able to direct them toward the fulfillment of our dreams. And all that we desire and have missed comes to us at the right time following the radiant silver threads of our inner Nature.”

How do Elves Deal with our Emotions?

     First of all, we elves are not usually portrayed as particularly emotional people. We are most often seen to manifest the saying, ‘Still waters run deep.’ Most often, we are rather calm and serene with an icing of joy upon it. At the same time, we are not noted for being repressed individuals either. We are not hiding our emotions for the most part, we are not repressing them or suppressing them, although we have spent a bit of time, through the years, sublimating them.

     The difference in these activities is that those who repress their emotions often don’t even know or acknowledge the intense feelings that they are having. It all gets stuffed down into the unconscious and under pressure can explode outwardly and often unexpectedly into the world and quite frequently with terrible results. Repressed emotions are like a volcano that exists beneath the surface but no one realizes it is there until it forces its way to the surface.

     Suppression generally involves a more conscious effort to hold one’s emotions in check. In that sense, it is a superior psychological strategy to repression but still holds the possibility of just bursting out when one is under pressure. It’s more like a volcano you know exists, but it’s still there and quiet most of the time. You just don’t know when it might erupt and then cause havoc.

     Sublimation involves the transference of emotional energy, such as anger, into something more productive. One of the simplest examples is of those individuals who count to ten to calm thems’elves down. Some folks clean their house, others work out or play sports, we elves usually make magic. This, of course, does not take the place of truly dealing with our emotions. But if we can use our emotions to drive our magic in a positive way like wishing for what we truly need, then we may be at least making some movement toward a more healing environment or even toward contact with kindred that will help us. While doing magic to deal with our emotions may in some way be a distraction from feeling into our suffering, it can be a very important positive step.

What are our Elven Instincts?

     It is important not to run from our emptiness and aloneness as individuals. Denying our deepest feelings, that part of us connected to our soulful being, and pretending we don’t feel something is surely not natural and thus not really in accordance with the way elves tend to do things. Ours is the natural way, only not Nature running amok but Nature tended into a beautiful elfin garden. We are not only natural beings but supernatural beings. Nature perfecting itself.

     The elven spirit is oriented toward becoming as natural and evolved as possible in whatever form we take (in whatever dimension we inhabit). We elves, therefore, are oriented to accept our deepest inner Nature in the human form we have presently incarnated in and so have a propensity toward an awareness of our instinctual feelings and the goal of obtaining consciousness of body-mind unity. In that way, we are evolved in our consciousness from perhaps the majority of humans on Earth at this time. We could even say we are “Super Humans” or evolved Humans, not just human in form but ‘humane’ in consciousness and action. This does not mean that normal humans cannot evolve or that there are not already evolved Humans, as there surely are many and many more to come in the ancient future. Many elves feel we are incarnated in human bodies to help humans learn to accept who they truly are, to be in touch with their individual inner Nature and to evolve benevolently as a species. That is surely part of what drives us to incarnate among them. Our own development is another yet connected element in this.

     So, you may ask, what is this inner Nature that is connected and felt within our instinctive feelings, that cannot be changed by our thoughts and the conditioning of society? What is this inner Nature that the elven spirit is drawn to follow? This is most easily understood by the distinction between emotions and instinctive feelings. Emotions are most often mind based, which is to say they are a strong feeling energy aroused by some idea or notion (often a negative idea about our own inner being), quite often by an idea that has no truth, validity or actual connection to reality. These emotions are the feelings that can be triggered in our awareness, and are red flags that we still have some unresolved issues from our past to embrace and work out in our consciousness.      On the otherhand, instinctive feelings are deeper and less mind involved than emotions. They originate from the gut or Hara, and on a purely intuitive and instinctive level they have little to do with thinking at all. Please be clear that we are not talking here about other animal instincts, but of Human instincts related to Human inner Nature. In a way, it would be more accurate to call them “elven instincts” as these Human or Humane (superhuman) instincts (pure gut feeling energy) are always calling us to be closer to our true Nature and in harmony with Nature all around us. This is why we Silver Elves say that if a person wishes to be an elf, they can become an elf by becoming more and more aware of their own inner nature, the instinctive feeling guide within them, and begin to follow the Elven Way quite naturally. Sadly, many humans choose to ignore their most Humane aspect, their inner instinctive Nature. But never the less, our Human or Humane (superhuman) instincts, our elven instincts, are never completely atrophied and are always sending us signals to guide us to find a balance between feeling loved and connected to others (acceptance through soul connection) and in being in control of our own responses to life (freedom of spirit). These two needs of the soul and spirit must be constantly in balance and too much of one without the other leaves us feeling empty. If they are in balance, then we feel full of life (just check your gut!) and our vitality flows freely, with body and mind united and in harmony with all of Nature. And instinctive feelings are generally quieter, even though deeper, purer and magically more powerful and enduring than emotions. Instinctive feelings are like planets and stars, while emotions are like comets and asteroids.

How can elves use our “Elven Instincts” in our Magic?

     We can empower our magic with emotion, but that is for very short term magics, usually. Instinctive feelings are for enduring magics — the deep magics that come from the center of our being and flow outwardly into the world. Emotional magic is more likely to cause a big stir in the short run but it is instinctive feeling magic that usually produces lasting results.

     When you run into conflict and feel very emotional about it, you can blast your opponent with emotion-based magic and that can be quite effective, but it is usually only effective for severing relationships, it is not very good for keeping them going. Although, passion can be a great way to start something, but in some ways, passion is really like burning rubber before you race off in your car. In the long run, it is true feeling that will keep a relationship going.

     And if you long and hunger for relationship, feel quite alone and empty, it is just those instinctive feelings that can be used to Call Your Others, for the feelings of aloneness and emptiness contain the possibility of togetherness and fulfillment. Pour that longing into your spell as you Sound the Call of Gathering and Union.

     We know, some people say that you should ignore those empty feelings and fake it till you make it. That is what most of the normal world does, and pretends everything is just fine right up to the point when it all goes sideways and then they get very emotional about it all. But we elven do not ignore our feelings, and instead our elven spirit calls us to seek to understand the difference in our emotions and instinctive feelings. In doing this, we embrace the instinctive feelings related to our true inner Nature (our “elven Instincts”) and are then able to direct them toward the fulfillment of our dreams. And all that we desire and have missed comes to us at the right time following the radiant silver threads of our inner Nature.

In other words, this and many of the other disorders are a natural (in their unnatural way) step toward a greater and more developed humanity. Once the new mental function for human beings with the emphasis on symbols is developed and expressed, mankind will see the necessity for once again bringing in the awareness of their feelings/instincts which have been repressed and will then unite the body and mind, opening the ability for higher intuition with a true evolutionary advance. That the elves tend to be a bit ahead of many other races in regards to this development is only to point out, as folklore and fiction have often done, that we are the Elder/Eldar race and thus a little bit ahead of the rest of humanity in the process of evolution. But they will catch up in time, although by that time, most of us will have moved on.”

We Silver Elves are happy to announce the publication of An Elfin Book of Trees for the Elven Druid! “We have always loved, from the first moment we encountered them, the trees and therefore admired, from first we heard of it, the relationship of the Druids to the trees. Being Silver Elves — Elves of Starlight, Moonlight and the Radiance of the Trees — we naturally feel an affinity for nearly anyone else who also loves trees. And the Druids, being seers, bards and magic wielders, especially found a place in our hearts, minds and souls for their deep love and connection to the trees and to the spirit world.”

“This book can be used as an oracle. Perhaps, that is its chief purpose. That is up to you, really. For our own part in writing it, we learned a great deal about the tree families of the world and for us that was wonderful. We love trees. Not that we’ll remember it all or even most of it. But a passing acquaintance is nice. This book is a way, in a sense, of listening to the trees. It is not the same as being out in the trees and feeling their radiant and wondrous presence, nor ingesting some of the herbs that plants and trees use to enlighten us. However, not all of us, in the modern world, can be among the trees regularly or as much as we would like and this tome is, in that sense, designed to express their voice in the form of an oracle for those of us who are unable at present to spend a great deal of time among them. Although, in our hearts and imaginations, we are ever surrounded by the forest. And in that sense, this book is a forest, an elven woodland, an elvish glade, a living book of tree lore.”

“We are also genuinely fond of Liz and Colin Murray’s The Celtic Tree Oracle and even though some people find Robert Graves’s book The White Goddess and its interpretation of the Language or Alphabet of the Trees to be spurious, we found great insight in it, although we accepted from the beginning that it was a theoretical interpretation and not necessarily a factual representation of the Druids and their Ogham Script and their Alphabet (Ælfabet) of the Trees. After all, the Druids had an oral tradition. They didn’t write anything down as far as their teachings, beliefs, tales, myths and history until they became Christianized (those that survived the Romans), and almost everything we know about them comes, for the most part, from their contemporaries, the Romans, and from the archeologists of today who, for their own part, are doing a bit of educated theorizing about the Druids just as the Romans did (although, hopefully, with less bias).”

“There are only twenty-five letters in the Druid tree alphabet, associated with letters of the English language, but obviously connected previously with various Celtic dialects and languages. That has always seemed too few trees to us. We realized that the Druids, surely, were dealing with the major types of trees in their vicinity, the British Isles, parts of France and Spain and mostly Southern Europe, where they lived and this is certainly understandable. We each tend to speak of and deal with the world that we know.”

“We, being elves, however, see the whole world as our ancestral lands, and quite frankly there are certain types of trees, which we love and adore, that just weren’t represented in the Tree world of the Druids, but which are decidedly part of our own Elven understanding of the world of the trees. The Banyan tree is one of these, one that we truly adore, although there are others. You could say that we woodland elves are tree worshipers; however, this is surely not the case in a religious sense but in the sense of pure absolute love and adoration for the wonder of the trees who have a power of enchantment that is all their own. Some trees are wise beyond our understanding and provide enlightenment and illumination to those who are open to their wisdom.”

“At the same time, there are over 60,000 species of trees in the world, so dealing with every species seemed a bit more than we wished to take on. Although, we wouldn’t mind doing so in a future lifetime. It would be rather like when we created, channeled, remembered, whatever you will, our Silver Elf language of Arvyndase (see Arvyndase (SilverSpeech): A Short Course in the Magical Language of the Silver Elves and The Complete Dictionary of Arvyndase), which took us over a decade to complete. So, we decided instead to deal with the basic types and families of trees, which gave us 111 possibilities overall and this seemed perfect and doable to our elven minds. In some cases, we picked a whole tree family to be represented by a Wizard Myne (we decided we should call these runes as Wizard Many-s [spelled Mynes in Arvyndase] instead of Ogham Fews) and at other times we selected individual trees. And so, in this way, we have created, channeled, remembered The Elven Book of Trees and expanded our Wizard Script to go with it.”

A Little About the Wizard Script (used as the Elven Ogham for each of the 111 trees in An Elfin Book of Trees for the Elven Druid) . . . . “We Silver Elves love scripts, magical scripts especially, but all sorts of scripts. We are particularly fond of the Tibetan alphabet and also Arabian script, both of which look a bit like tribal tattoos to us. We also love The Alphabet of the Magi, Angelic, also known as Celestial, Enochian, Malachim, Passing the River, Theban and the Ogham Fews (letters) of the Celtic tribes and their Druids. We have even created our own elven scripts for Arvyndase that can be found in our book of that title and Wizard script, which is our version of the Ogham, the script of the Elven Wizards and Elven Druids.”

“We had originally created Wizard Script as letters associated, along with the Arvyn and Sylvyn scripts, with our own elven language and the twenty-five letters of the Arvyndase language (there is no X in Arvyndase, the sound X makes is either a Z sound at the beginning of a word or a KS sound within a word or at its end). However, in creating An Elfin Book of Trees for the Elven Druid, we realized that we needed a lot more Wizard Script letters than we had originally created, but thankfully found that Wizard Script lent itself easily and naturally to their creation.”

“Further, we very much admire the look of the Ogham Fews that we have seen in photos of ancient carved stones and in modern times on sticks of wood, short branches that have had a side shaved off with a word spelled using Ogham upon it. We hope that our elven kindred will find Elven Wizard script Mynes as magical as the Ogham Fews and that they will delight in it as we delight in almost every script.”

This book is easy to use as an oracle and the specifics on just how to do so are covered in the introduction and through out the book, with elven spells at the end of each chapter, written in English and also Arvyndase (the language of the Silver Elves), to be used for enchantment magic upon drawing the tree or tree group.

Tree Name in Arvyndase: Tarle (pronounced: Tayr – lee)

Arvyndase Name of the Wizard Myne: Tålyn (pronounced: tahl – lynn)

 

This Tree and Its Magic:

The Fir tree is associated with the traditional Ogham Ailim and with far sight. This is true especially of the Silver Firs, because of their great height. The Douglas Fir, by the way, is not considered a true Fir. Firs differ from other members of the Pine family due to the way in which their needle-like leaves. which together resemble a suction cup, are attached singly to their branches at a common base, and the fact that their cones stand erect on the branches reminiscent of candles being held upright (the origin of the lights or candles on the Yule tree?).

     Due to this, we Silver Elves associate these trees to the Wizard Myne Tålyn that is an extension of the Arvyndase word Tål that means path, as in one’s spiritual path, the path to which we elfae become attached like a suction cup, because it lights our way into the distant future like a candle, granting us far sight and the ability to see our Destiny. Like the leaves of these trees, we tread the Elven Way both singly and together, lighting the way for others who seek the path as well.

 

What This Oracle Means:

     In getting this Wizard Myne, it is advised that you look into your future, your far future, your destiny and see how you can get there. Especially, join with others in a vortex or some other elfin band and work together toward your mutual and common spiritual goals. At the same time, always preserve your uniqueness as an elfae, your individuality, your sense of s’elf and the confidence and inner authority of your being. Often groups seek to break individuals down to make them conform to the group, but those are not truly elven groups. In elfin groups, we light the way for each other. We support each other’s individuality and often each other’s eccentricities and we tread the path together as strong individuals united.

     Be strong, kindred. Look for yours’elf into the future and see what is there for you. Others may see something different, but hold true to your own sense of the path. People sometimes talk about the ‘odd man out’, but we elves are the ‘odd that are in’. Individuality is a vital part of our culture and we are all different together, for our uniqueness is one of the things that we elfae share in common.

This Tree and Its Magic:

The Saguaro cactus, which is often seen as an icon of the American West, is a tree-like cactus that can grow up to forty feet tall. It is native to the Sonoran Desert of Arizona and Mexico and can also be found in parts of California. Note that the sorcery of Don Juan Matus of Carlos Castaneda’s books often takes place in the Sonoran Desert. So, there is an aspect of elven sorcery here.

These trees can live to one hundred and fifty years old. While they often have branches or arms that grow out, some are a simple trunk without arms and this armless tree is called a spear. Thus, we Silver Elves relate this Wizard Myne to the Number 1, that looks like a spear, and to the elf spear and also to the desert elves. Its Myne name, Lefålyn, comes from the Arvyndase word Lefål (lee – fahl) that means spear.

The Saguaro is able to store up large amounts of water, which helps it subsist during the long periods of desert drought. It has numerous spines that are also, in their way, spear-like or dagger-like. And it produces white waxy flowers from the months of April to June that create a nectar that is beloved to honey bees, long nosed bats, particularly, as well as, white-winged doves. But, it also attracts woodpeckers, hummingbirds, orioles, the gilded flicker, a type of tit, and also the house finch, all of which contribute to its pollination.

It produces a ruby red edible fruit that can contain up to 2,000 seeds. Some birds, such as the Gila woodpeckers, purple martins, house finches, and gilded flickers create nests inside the Saguaro, but abandon these nests each season to create new ones. This leaves the old nests available for flycatchers, wrens and elf owls, although non-native and more aggressive birds have been invading their territory thus making it hard for the elf owl to find shelter. Where have we heard that story before?

 

What This Oracle Means:

In receiving this Wizard Myne, one is advised to prepare for possible difficult or lean times ahead. One might be wise to save, rather than spend, at this point, to be strong and stand up for ones’elf without being aggressive, speak your truth without demeaning others, even if they are rude to you, and give as generously as you can when you can do so. For in this way, you will gain support when the time comes that you really need it. Be a shelter for others and help them endure the hard times as well and, in doing so, you will increase your spiritual and magical clan and find a niche in an otherwise hostile territory. The key here is in making alliances.

It is possible that you are in an area where there is not much in the way of elven culture, or elfae friends or kindred and while migrating elsewhere may be a solution, it also may be the case that you simply cannot do so at this time because your job or support system is tried up with the particular area or situation you are currently in.

It is difficult being an elfae in the modern world and often finding those we can relate to as kindred elfin in our vicinity is hard as well, and this requires incredible resolve and perseverance and quite often we must compromise and hang out with those who are most elfin-like while they may not actually be elfae or, at least, know and identify as such. We might call this Hanging with the Unawakened. You are a ‘Stranger in a Strange Land’ (as the Wilhelm/Baynes translation I Ching says), or really, a Stranger in Your Own Land and only the most resilient of elves can stay true to their path under these circumstances. Most folks cannot bear the loneliness and thus fade back into the world but even if you do so, it is quite possible that Elfin, in the form of other elves, will come along in time to find you and you will be stirred from your nap and refreshed and can start once again, renewed and more experienced. The Elven Way is always there and available, even when we are not treading it.

Dipterocarpaceae Family

Tree Group Name in Arvyndase: Frofaborelpa (froe – fah – bore – eel – pah)

Arvyndase Name of the Wizard Myne: Froflyn (pronounced froe-f – lynn)

 

This Tree and Its Magic:

The Dipterocarpaceae family of trees and shrubs contain about 16 genera and approximately 695 species that are for the most part tropical lowland rainforest trees. The family name comes from the Greek words di, meaning two; pteron, which means wing; and karpos, which is the word for fruit, all this because of the two-winged fruit that these trees produce. Therefore, we Silver Elves associate these trees with the Wizard Myne Froflyn, which comes from the Arvynadse word frof, or wing. This myne is used to symbolize the Number Two, and is further associated with Faerie Wings and by extension Elf Ears, which are the symbolic representations of the faerie and elven peoples.

Besides being harvested by Man for timber, these trees are valued by the elfae for balsam, for their aromatic essential oils and for other resins that they create. We elves love our aromatic essential oils and we expect that the faerie folk do as well. In fact, we put them on nearly every day.

These trees can rise to great heights, some reaching 260 feet tall, about 80 meters, and generally grow above the rest of the trees in the forest reaching for the sky, as faerie wings allow the faeries to ascend to great heights. It is said that these trees have ‘crown shyness’, which is to say that when they become mature, they do not let their crowns touch each other, an indication to the minds of these elves of individual uniqueness and nobility. In fact, for the elven, uniqueness and eccentricity are signs of nobility.

In Borneo and other places where these trees grow in abundance, it is said that up to 90% of these trees in a particular section of the forest will all bear fruit at the same time. This is called ‘mass fruiting’ and its evolutionary purpose is to overwhelm potential predators with abundance, (a very elven way of going about things). The predators then eat their fruits and propagate them all over the forest as they migrate from place to place seeking another area where these trees are in the process of fruiting en masse.

One of the major contributors to this process is the bearded, wild boar that tirelessly forages the jungle, roots about in the earth and reshapes the soil surface and at the same time in doing so accelerates the decomposition of organic matter. Its browsing clears the undergrowth, which improves the access of tree roots to needed soil nutrients. Note that the blue boar was often used as a symbol of wild power and warrior spirit by the Celts. The native folk of Borneo see this bearded boar as an ambassador from the spirit world of the forest, the realm of the elves and faerie folk, and possibly the Celts saw them this way as well.

 

What This Oracle Means:

While modern faeries don’t usually have physical wings, nor do most incarnate elves have pointed ears, the faeries do like to create and wear their wings from time to time and we elves don our elf ears to declare who we are spiritually in our hearts (feelings), minds and souls (our connection and link to others). Thus, if you get this Wizard Myne as an oracle, it is time to be daring enough to reveal who you truly are, at least to those you can trust, and let the Light of Elfin and Faerie shine anew through you and out into the world around you.

It is not that you can trust everyone. But we do have the great wise bearded spirit boar (possibly blue, which denotes the second ray of Love-Wisdom, what the Elf Queen’s Daughters used to refer to as our Shield of Love, see The Elf Magic Mail: The Original Letters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters with Commentary by The Silver Elves, vols. 1 & 2) to protect us. And we have our own mature understanding that tells us it would be naive to think that everyone will accept us for who we really are, and those who take any sign of difference as permission to bully and persecute those unlike them do exist.

But they are not everywhere and they usually feel very uncomfortable venturing into Faerie or Elfin. Not everyone will accept you for who you truly are and know yours’elf to be, but surely there are those around you who, while they may not totally understand your elfae nature will be openminded enough to let you wear your wings of spirit or your noble elf ears without making fun of you or harassing you for doing so. They may even find it quite intriguing, while others of your kind may very well join you.

In other words, be yours’elf. Wear your elfae crown as the unique individual that you are and stand tall in the world, independently, and lead the way for others. Find those with whom you can trust to share this inner truth, and nurture and protect each other and let your faerie or elf or otherkin out for a run, or a soar.

Are Elves Human? Is an Elven Soul and Spirit Different from that of a Human?

“The soul is the unifying aspect of our being. It connects us to others, for that is its function and to say that an elven soul is different than a human soul is to misunderstand the nature of humanity and, even more so, the true nature of the soul. All souls are One. Soul is the connective tissue of the energetic Universe. It seeks similarities not differences by its very nature. . . . .And while each elven spirit is unique, we do have a high propensity by our very elven spirit to seek to embrace our inner Nature within the human body or the true Nature of whatever form we have taken. And in that way, our elven spirits move us to evolve to be super human and lead humanity in uniting body and mind and developing intuitional intelligence through awareness of our inner Nature, as Humans will also do in the Ancient Future.”

Are Elves Human?

From our point of view, not all Elves or Fae or Faeries or Otherkin are human. There are elf birds, and elf trees, and elf deer and many other elfin beings who are not human at all or only sort of. Surely, the porpoises and dolphins are elfin without being human, although they are mammals like humans. And, there are the Shining Ones who have advanced to the point where they don’t need human bodies at all anymore but may still take one on because the material realm is a great place to not only learn things but also to test one’s spirit, to develop one’s soulful connection to others, to improve one’s powers and abilities and one’s adeptship in magic and enchantment, and also to help advance and awaken our kindred still learning in the material world. We don’t have to have teachers but they can be very helpful.

And, of course, there are all those who are in the In Between, in the life between physical manifestations, where one doesn’t have a body, per se, one just is as one often is in one’s dreams. The development of Lucid Dreaming can be an important aid to navigating those realms where physicality has given way to pure awareness and sentient consciousness.

Of course, there are many elfae folks in human bodies who say that they are not human. This sounds contradictory and even a bit crazy at times, since they clearly have human bodies. But what they are really saying is that while they may have a human body on the material plane that their spirit is other than human. They may appear to be humans on the surface, but inside they are dragons, or faeries, or elves or aspiring Shining Ones, but then, who of us aren’t aspiring Shining Ones, really?

This is rather similar to those who, while they may have the body of a male or female in physical form, feel within that they are really of the other gender. If we add to this the fact that doctors for generations have surgically altered children who have been born with both sexual organs so they will only adhere to one gender, one can understand that life is much more complex in reality than the black and white —falsehood and absolute truth — that many people like to think defines the world and therefore they unfortunately do not always accept many beautiful variations of life. The moon doesn’t just come out at night.

A conflict arises, however, due greatly to the fact that this is the Kali Yuga or Dark Age or Materialistic Age, where nearly everything is conceived of as having materialistic underpinnings and origins. We have passed the half way point, dear Kindred, of our descend into matter and now we begin to slowly ascend again into the understanding of the spiritual nature and origin of life but still many people are affected deeply by this materialistic orientation. So, it is that many individuals who are spiritually Other, but have material human bodies, wish to believe that their physical body is also somehow better or essentially different than those around them, claiming some genetic source of their spiritual being. And who is to say that this isn’t so on some very subtle level. If there is a material source for everything than surely the reason we feel we are, say we are and live as elves, fae and others can be found in some, as yet, undiscovered aspect of our genetic makeup. We are human surely but of a different sort.

It does seem to be true, at least we elves have often encountered the fact, that elfin folk often look younger than our contemporaries and often live longer. But that really has more to do with the way we live our lives than strict genetics. We tend to take care of ours’elves. We eat as healthily as we can, we exercise, and avoid (surely limit the use of) most of those things, such as cigarettes and addictive drugs, that have such a wearing and aging affect upon the human body.

If our human bodies are superior to the bodies of those normal folk who are around us, it is mostly because we have cared for our bodies, rather like an automobile that is well maintained, rather than neglected and abused them. In living the life Elfin, we choose the superior path of care and maintenance for our minds, spirits, souls and our bodies, in every dimension and the care of our others as well. This is the Elven Way and while we may not all be human, or not human all the time, or not entirely human, we are human enough and elfin enough to do our best to strive to create a better world for us and all others.

There are some elfin folk who like to claim that their bodies, while humanoid, are not really human. They tell us they have superior elven bodies due to their special genetic lineage. Nicholas De Vere claimed that those of pure elven blood, by which he meant direct descent from the Scythians, had a genetic power to do magic and also to being rulers of average humanity. According to him, elves were born to rule. While he provided a series of documents (we would have preferred DNA test) indicating the purity of his lineage, he offered no real proof or evidence that he could do magic that others couldn’t or that he would, in fact, make a good ruler.

In truth, there isn’t much, if any, evidence at all that great rulers produce children who are also great rulers. Nor that great mechanics give birth to great mechanics or great artists to great artists. It is not that it never happens, but it is rather rare really. It would be more accurate to say, we think, that those who are raised from children and educated in mechanics, or violin or anything else, have some advantage in developing that skill over others who take it up later. Here we are not discounting the awareness of genetic studies that suggest a link between several genes and creativity, particularly musical ability. But genetic potential does not assure talent without education and training. Still, there are many whose parents seem rather ordinary who have emerged to greatness in some field or activity that the parents didn’t do themselves but often in areas the parents actively discouraged and advised against.

The only thing we can really say for certain about European monarchies active use of eugenics to create a superior race of rulers, a class above as it were, was that all that inbreeding resulted in the manifestation in royal bloodlines of a variety of inherited diseases and disorders. One can inherit genetic things through one’s blood and body, but things of the mind and spirit, are inherit, quite a bit, through those realms and may also be altered through generations of time with epigenetic modifications. Especially, the powers of the spirit.

Still, we will find, now and again, individuals who make all sorts of claims about having elven bodies with advanced genetics and blood lineage with no evidence whatsoever to back up their claims. They make claim to greater powers as well as the ability to live nearly forever. Alas, often the very way in which they express their superiority makes one doubt its efficacy. We might ask ours’elves why individuals wish to make such claims in the first place, for they are clearly untrue. If you are communicating by email or instant messenger, or if you’ve ever been to a dentist and have fillings in your teeth, have had a root canal or have a crown or two in your mouth, or if you neglected to go to the dentist or neglected your teeth or have been subject to gum disease and have lost some of your teeth, guess what? You have a human body!

Some of the elfae who make such claims do so in order to separate thems’elves from Mankind. They wish to say: I’m not one of those crazy people who would destroy the Earth because of their own greed and ignorance. In this way, these are embracing the idea that the I Ching espouses that in many ways the highest good is being able to authentically say: It’s not my fault.

Some who make such claims, however, are attempting to create some sense of authority for thems’elves. They are saying, in effect, I have a superior elven body and thus you should listen to me because I’m clearly more advanced than you and therefore right. Alas, this is a logical fallacy. While we might give greater credence to the thoughts of those who are truly experts on a particular subject, that doesn’t mean they are always right in what they think all the time. It is not enough to be a noted scientist and declare a theory. One must support one’s theories with facts, reasoning and logic. And those who use the claim of having advanced elven bodies or to being great adept elves as the sole support for their ideas, not only don’t back up their claims with logic and facts, they can’t even demonstrate the true authenticity of their claims about their genetic makeup. What is worst is that often such individuals are not only using their claims to establish their authority as individuals, saying, in effect, I’m the authority so you should listen to me, they are also using these claims as a means of belittling the ideas and the intrinsic value of others. Saying, quite obvious, I’m better than you so I must be right.

Now, we Silver Elves don’t claim to be experts on anything, really. Some people think we are experts on Celtic Lore, but we know we are not. We are far from it. We just seem expert when seen in the light of their own admitted lack of knowledge on the subject. We used to have a friend that would tell us that we should claim to be experts on Celtic studies, because we couldn’t always tell them we were elves. And when we pointed out that we weren’t experts on Celtic lore, this individual replied, “Well, they won’t know that.”

Nor are we even experts on magic, faerie lore, or even elves. Any more than every man or woman is an expert on men and women, although many of them claim to be. The most we can say is that we are perpetual students of many areas of study and are really quite humble elf folk for the most part. We make no claim to being superior to our kindred, we know we are here on Earth together. We are not here to raise ours’elves above you, but to rise together. And our ideas are merely that, our ideas. No, less than that. Our ideas at any moment may change as soon as we encounter superior ideas and inspiration. And it doesn’t matter what sort of body you have, beloved kin, it’s the power of our hearts and mind that will bring us all closer to living the life Elfin.

Is an Elven Soul and Spirit Different from that of a Human?

At the heart of this question, there is an unspoken assumption that elves are not human. As we have said in the article above, we know that there are many folk who would like to think that they are different than the humans around them but nearly anyone who can or is likely to read these words, surely has a human body to do so.

It is not that there aren’t elven who don’t have human bodies: elven porpoises, dolphins, elven birds, etc. and elves of other dimensions, but they are, for the most part, not likely to read these words and then write and claim they aren’t human. The difference between elves and others, really, is more like the difference between Whites and Blacks and Asians and every other variety of people thereof, except for the fact that we elves may be born into bodies from any of those races and often born into ones that are some mixture thereof. The difference between elves and other humans is more one of temperament and spirit rather than strict physical distinctions, although we do tend to age less quickly, are thinner for the most part and less bulkily muscular and so on, but those aspects may vary as well.

Most often when people say that they are elven, fae or other and not human, what they are really saying is that energetically or spiritually, which is to say their true inner being, is other than human. Alas, because so many people in this Materialistic Age feel compelled to consider the physical world as the base from which all this evolves, they express this in a physical fashion, even though it is clear that there is no physical or actually major genetic basis for them doing so.

However, if you view the world from an energetic point of view, then it should be clear that the world is filled with beings who are not really human. In fact, quite a number are inhuman beings. There are humans that are (energetically speaking) also chickens, pigs, old goats, young goats, and sheep, lots and lots of sheep, each bleating about every little thing they disagree with and all baa-baaing together about their shepherd who is their lord, master and savior and sticking close together because of the sheep dogs he has constantly nipping at their heels, since they do have a tendency, as they inform us, to stray. There are also trolls, quite a few roaming around these days, as well as pixies, faeries, brownies, orcs and all manner of folk.

This is all to say that we otherworldly types have some sense of our energetic fourth dimensional being and understand inwardly, if not always in a clear intellectual fashion, that this is a profound aspect of our characters. In that way, we may be very different from other humans, but we still, for the most part, have human bodies as well as our fourth dimensional manifestation.

Souls, however, are a different thing altogether. At their essence, all souls are the same. We might compare them, however inadequately, to telephones. However much a telephone might seem different in appearance or capability or the plan its connected to, all phones are made to send and receive messages. The soul is the unifying aspect of our being. It connects us to others, for that is its function and to say that an elven soul is different than a human soul is to misunderstand the nature of humanity and, even more so, the true nature of the soul. All souls are One. Soul is the connective tissue of the energetic Universe. It seeks similarities not differences by its very nature.

It is true that some people have let their batteries die. Some don’t really use their phones much. Some have taken out their batteries altogether and perhaps thrown them away. And some phones are old and don’t work very well, although the opposite tends to be the case for souls, for the older, or more experienced a soul is, the better it tends to work. Nearly all magic depends upon soulful and energetic connection. This is especially true of enchantment. There are those who have pretty much killed their souls who can still affect the world through the pure power of their spirit, but that is exhausting and that magic, as they like to say, always has a cost and the cost in the long run is usually quite dear. Whereas, enchantment and soulful magic profits everyone. You get much more than you put into it, and so does everyone else. That’s why it’s so powerful.

So, there is no difference in essence from an elven soul and any other soul, human or otherwise, because souls unify and connect. Their nature is harmony and mutual reciprocation. The soul seeks what is the same, not what is different and while they can be differentiated through time and experience, just as water may take on impurities, in its pure state, water remains the same.

The spirit, on the other hand, is another matter entirely. Its nature is individual and individualizing and at its essence, every developed spirit is unique. Thus, the elven spirit is not only different from every other human spirit, it is eccentric and unique from all spirits and growing more so all the time.

And while each elven spirit is unique, we do have a high propensity by our very elven spirit to seek to embrace our inner Nature within the human body or the true Nature of whatever form we have taken. And in that way, our elven spirits move us to evolve to be super human and lead humanity in uniting body and mind and developing intuitional intelligence through awareness of our inner Nature, as Humans will also do in the Ancient Future.

What do the Elves Think about the Modern World of Humans Straying from Being United with Nature?

“. . . whatever the past may have been like, whether we were noble savages or citizens of high civilizations, it would behoove us now to strive for unity and that surely begins with a basic courtesy toward each other, a tolerance for our differences, and a renewed effort to manifest Elfin upon the Earth in the most harmonious, beautiful, loving and creative ways possible.”

     For some time, there has been the idea of the noble savage, which is defined as a literary character who represents the notion of the outsider, wild man/elf, who exists naturally in Nature and is seen as an other or otherkin who has not been affected by the corrupting influences of modern civilization. This being is sometimes used to represent the idea that humanity is innately good in their purity of being. This idea of the noble savage is often attributed to the French writer Jean-Jacques Rousseau, although we are told that he never actually used that term in his writing.

     This idea of the noble savage is sometimes applied to the elves and not without some truth in it. We are certainly other, the perpetual outsiders and surely, we tend to agree that there is something essentially good in the evolving elven character, a purity that can be found often in children. Although, the purity of children is frequently a thoughtless purity that may do mean, cruel or dangerous and harmful things without actually intending evil of any sort. It is destruction for the pure delight of it.

     The notion that we were once pure and advanced beings who lived in harmony with the Earth and Nature is a wonderful idea, but most likely veers a bit astray from the truth. The reality is that we elfae, like other peoples around the world, were mostly a tribal and clannish people. And while it is nice to think of us as united, this is surely far from the truth. We were, in many ways, like the Celts who were not one tribe but a series of tribes who shared a somewhat common culture. And like most ancient tribes, such as the Vikings, the Teutons and other Germanic tribes, the Britons, the First Nations peoples of the American continents and the tribes of Africa, we elves often struggled and fought among ours’elves.

     Even Tolkien in the Silmarillion showed the elves in conflict with each other at times. The Irish tales speak of the Sidhe and other faerie tribes combating each other and as much as we Silver Elves would like to see elves come together in mutual appreciation and harmony, we would be totally divorced from reality (rather than a trial separation) if we didn’t acknowledge that even on the internet there are those who claim to be elven and fae who spend quite a bit of their time trying to argue and tear down others of different elfae tribes. We are still a tribal and clannish people, often individual elves and fae scattered here and there about the world.

     And if what the Greeks wrote about the Scythians, from which most of the elfae of the British Isles were said to have descended from, they didn’t account thems’elves as being worthy of consideration as warriors at their annual gathering of their tribes if they hadn’t killed at least one person during the previous year. We surely were often savages, like other tribes, but mostly noble in our own opinion of ours’elves, like most other tribes and peoples as well.

     True nobility isn’t given or granted to us. It is not something that we inherit, although some would disagree, of course. It is something that exists within us in potential as beings, which we must make actual in our own lives and beings. The same is true of having a harmonious relationship with each other and with Nature.

     It is true that some elfae think, along with Tolkien’s tales in that vein, that we once had grand civilizations as did the Ancient Egyptians, Babylonians, Sumerians, and the Ancient Chinese, although they were also tribal folk brought together most often by force. And in as much as it is said that we descended, as some say, from the Anunnakians, this may be the truth. Although, the tales of Atlantis, Lemuria and other Lost Civilizations are also said to speak of our peoples.

     But esoterically, it is also possible and, we think even more likely, that these Elven Civilizations didn’t exist upon the present Earth but upon earlier manifestations of the Earth upon higher planes and dimensions as we worked our way downward into this material realm in order to infuse it with spirit and magic and gain mastery here. The civilizations we remember may not have been on this world at all but on other planes of existence.

     Due to the fact that other tribes and peoples overwhelmed our own tribes in the course of history, and did a great deal to wipe out our culture and substituted it with their own (as the Christians and Islamic peoples substituted their culture over Pagans ones), it is difficult to know the truth entirely. Instead, we find we are left to sense and intuit the truth, and what may be true for one, may be different for other elfae of other tribes. We are not all the same, we are indeed all different and unique, and in that is our similarity.

     What is clear, however, whatever the past may have been like, whether we were noble savages or citizens of high civilizations, it would behoove us now to strive for unity and that surely begins with a basic courtesy toward each other, a tolerance for our differences, and a renewed effort to manifest Elfin upon the Earth in the most harmonious, beautiful, loving and creative ways possible. If we are to create an elven civilization, it would benefit us greatly if we practiced basic civility. For civility is a great elven power of enchantment that should never be underestimated.
