When elf and faerie folk first awaken to their true natures, they often attempt to define that nature in very limiting ways, often saying that there are only five types of elves or eight types of fae folk, or otherwise narrowly delineating elfin nature, such as proclaiming that elves don’t kiss or that no elves are gay or other such nonsense.
Naturally, elves and fae folk who are more advanced in their understanding of their s’elves reject such limiting declarations. However, we come to realize in time that these attempts to limit the nature of elves aren’t really a reflection of an outward expression but actually an inward one. These individuals in attempting to limit all elves are really seeking to define and discover their own elven nature. They are not really saying, even though they think they are, that no elves kiss but rather that they come from a tribe of non-kissing elves, or that no elves are gay, but that they thems’elves are not.
Once one realizes that all these outer projections are truly a expression of the individual, all becomes clear and one can smile and acknowledge their efforts to declare their own natures while avoiding any sense of being personally limited thereby. For it is the right of every elf to define hir (his/her) own nature and this right cannot be abnegated nor abridged by any other.

The bird of memory long thought gone,

as the flocks of Elfin do take wing.”
