Do faeries die? And do we elves grow trees that never die?

     The question of “do faeries die?”  was posed in one of our Silver Elves Facebook groups and the answer, as Tolkien pointed out so astutely concerning we elven in general, is both yes and no. All things material die, which is to say change form. Death is merely a recognition that our material form has transformed. Faeries, in as much as they have material bodies, of necessity will die or change form. The material world is an illusion in the sense that it is formed from energy that takes different shapes. The shapes change but the energy that composes it remains, for energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it just changes shape. So, in so far as we are energy, we do not die, we just alter our appearance.

Therefore, the energy that composes faeries, and everything else for that matter, does not die. Although, it does shape shift, which is something we elfae are noted for doing. And what is shape shifting but changing form? And we’ve already noted that death is changing form, although, usually a complete or radical change of form. We change form like we change clothes. For we are spirits who inhabit bodies, not spirits who are bodies.

However, neither are we the energy that we use to create bodies. At least not in its grossest most material form. We are the consciousness that uses energy to create bodies that expresses the nature and current state of our spirit, our evolution and the lessons we undertake to become more and better (see our book Beyond Death: Ascending towards the Faerie Realms through Progressive Incarnations). And yet, that consciousness is a subtle thing. It seems to die as well. Every time we sleep or become ‘unconscious’ our awareness seems to die and yet, in a more subtle form, it still exists. We are, in many ways, the unconscious striving to become aware of itself and the world around it, which is really to say aware of other spirits and their consciousness.

In that sense, we sort of die, as do faeries, as we recede into our unconscious states of being. And yet, we still are. We wake up from sleep and despite those who think we only live once, we wake up from a change of bodies as well. Although, in a sense, they are right for we do only have one life or only live once, it is just that we have numerous forms, incarnations and bodies that are part of that eternal life.

The essence of our being, which again is to say consciousness, is ephemeral. It is not material and it arises from the great nothingness, which is space in its ethereal form and represents pure potentiality. Our consciousness arises from the unconscious or non-conscious from sleep. We awaken. And this is true of elves, faeries and all other beings. In that sense, we never die, we just sleep at times, change bodies and awaken again later. So, no, faeries do not die but they do change form.

Take the fact that faeries were once seen as being the same as elves are viewed to be today. Rather like Tolkien portrays us. This is also true of dwarves (of Dwarfs) and other elfae beings (see The World Guide to Gnomes, Fairies, Elves and Other Little People by Thomas Keightley and The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs by Claude Lecouteux). Elves, fae, faeries, dwarfs and other terms for we otherworldly folk were all used interchangeable by many peoples over the course of time. At one time, fae and faeries were not seen as having wings and were imagined pretty much as elves are imagined today. In time in the lore, faeries not only developed wings, as an idea, but also diminished into very small and sometimes ethereal beings. While in the lore, we elves acquired pointed ears and are also sometimes seen as being about the size of toddlers or even smaller. Many thanks to Tolkien for bringing us back to our actual size.

Of course, modern faeries love their faerie wings and we elves love our pointed ears. No doubt we will all transform in popular imagination even more as time goes on, which is a change of our etheric form in a sense, if not in our actual bodies. We are in the process of individuating and certainly in time we can expect more and different types of elves, faeries and others to develop as we become more and more our unique s’elves (see our book series Elf Tribes; Faerie, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; Elves, Faeries, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; Elfae Tribes; and Elfin, Fae and Otherkin Tribes).

So, yes, we change and, yes, our bodies die and transform but still we are eternally elves and faeries even though we are also known as and embrace ours’elves variously as Star Seeds, Star Children, Freaks, Hippies, Bohemians, Space Gypsies and a variety of other names. And we continue on, ever changing and transforming, for that is the way of the Universe and is surely The Elven Way as well.

Do we elves grow trees that never die?

In the book Return of the King, by J. R. R. Tolkien, Legolas says that elves grow trees that would never die. Of course, we modern elves don’t have the power to grow trees that never die, although we surely wish we did. After all, our own physical bodies are transitory and prone to aging and dying as we have explained above. And, let’s face it, most trees would be likely to live much longer than we do. That is if Men didn’t go around in some sort of greedy jealousy over that fact and an obstinate dismissal of the value of trees as living beings and murder them regularly much to our horror and chagrin.

For we elves do adore the trees in their varied and wondrous forms. And though their bodies do tend to live, when men don’t chop them down, much longer than we, we find that fact comforting. We surely wish them to live forever in their current bodies for it gives us hope of eventually doing the same.

If we did have the power to create things that never die, we would surely start with our children and loved ones. And then, of course, ours’elves so we could share in the joy of their lives and they in ours. However, trees would certainly come in next along with our familiars, cats, dogs, etc. and every other sort of wondrous creature such as the birds in the varied forms and the deer and other beings that we admire and could make friends with. So, yes, our friends would be near the top of the list. All our friends of various kinds, species and manifestations. And we are a friendly people.

Alas, while Tolkien’s fictional elves could grow trees that never died, we actual and real elves have a difficult time keeping our house plants alive. At least that’s true for we Silver Elves and according to Nicolas De Vere in his book The Dragon Legacy is true for most elves. Although, as is surely the case with almost everything concerning elves, there are surely exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions. We’ve said it before but it bears repeating, we elves are an exceptional people, which we also mean weird, eccentric and individualistic while being very group oriented at the same time.

Most lore about we elfae peoples, apart from Tolkien, doesn’t present the idea that we can grow trees that never die. Often, we can shape trees in various ways to form homes, or at least some of us can, which makes us consider the idea that Luther Burbank may have been elfae, in fact, he definitely seemed so. However, there is little in the lore that we’ve encountered that has our trees being immortal, although often we ours’elves are portrayed to be so.

At the same time, there is much in the lore that would indicate that Faerie its’elf is immortal and that everything in Faerie is touched by that immortality and shares in it as long as it or they are in Faerie. So, in Faerie the trees would never die for it is the Undying Realm. And while we elfae folk are not always viewed as being immortal, we are frequently seen to experience greater longevity than most of the race of Men.

There is just something about being elven that tends to extend our lives. This may not be true in every particular case, but it seems to be true overall. Perhaps it’s our diet, or the love we feel for each other and our love of the trees and other beings, or our happiness and joy and being together and in being elfin or all of the above. Being elfae seems to have the effect of extending our lives and being in Elfin and Faerie moves us, according to the lore, toward immortality. Therefore, as we live our lives as the elfae we know ours’elves to truly be (despite the opinions of those who don’t really believe in us in the first place) and as we create our own ealds thereby manifesting Elfin and Faerie in the world, we are increasing our chances of living longer and eventually in that way creating immortal bodies that will harmonize with our already immortal spirits.

And, if we are wrong about this, well, it’s worth trying anyway. It’s fun to do so and fun is life giving. It’s magic, and magic extends our lives when we do it with love. And, it is far better, at least from our elvish point of view, than being normal for then we’d languish in ennui and be bored to death. What fun is that?

We Silver Elves wish you a very Happy Elven Star Day, dear Kindred and Friends! It is a 7.7.7. day in numerology or July (7) 7th (7) 2023 (which adds up to 7) and so what better day to celebrate Elven Star Day than on 777. It is a Day to celebrate manifesting Elfin/Faerie in our lives and some say the portals to the Faerie Realms are open on this day and thus it is a good day to bring in the magic and beauty in our lives all around us on this very day.

     “Being an elf is an organic thing. Even if there were no books to read or stories that tell of us in the modern media, we’d still know ours’elves to be elves, perhaps by a different name, but elves none-the-less. So, too, we have a holiday, so to speak, called Elven Star Day. Elven Star Day doesn’t occur on a particular date each year, as most holidays do. It isn’t even based upon a somewhat floating calendar, the way that Easter, Thanksgiving and Chinese New Year are. Rather, an elf will wake up one morning and hear a voice whisper, “It’s Elven Star Day!” or perhaps they will just feel this strongly or sense it in their intuition and then for seven days they will meditate on each one of the points of the seven-pointed Elven Star and see what it reveals to them as well as sending out elven blessings into the world. We Silver Elves happen to love the Elven Star (acute seven-pointed star) from the first time we saw it posted on one of the letters of the Elf Magic Mail (see our two books of that title) that we and our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters (EQD) used to mail out every week for over two years back in the mid-1970s. Our sisters Arwen and Elanor who were the founders of the EQD, first conceived (in this lifetime in the mid 1970s) of using this star for the elven community and put them upon the EQD letters on numerous occasions. Since the five-pointed star represented Mankind (inspired in Arwen’s mind by Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man), Arwen Eveningstar added wings to that figure (so one ray for the head, two for the arms, two for the legs, and two for the wings) and thus came up with a 7 pointed star to represent the Elves and the evolution of humankind into the Angelic Realms. Obviously, due to the wings, it represents our faerie kindred as well. In fact, the very first letter of the Elf Magic Mail shared by the EQD that had this symbol showed a five-pointed star with wings called “The Winged Star” (you may see a photo of it here on this page).  Thus from the very beginning the idea existed beneath the surface that this was also the Faerie Star. So it represents all Fae folk, elves, pixies, faeries, brownies and otherkin and all are welcome to use it.

We, collectively with the EQD, published and sent out by snail mail three letters a week to a mailing list of about 300 elf friends and the Elven Star was featured on many of them. We Silver Elves continued this practice of putting the Elven Star in our own Silver Elves letters when we took up the Dharma of publishing these musings, which now can be found under the title The Magical Elven Love Letters (see volumes 1, 2, and 3 and sample letters), which we published from the 1979 up until the early 2000’s. Although, while we began these writings as snail mail they evolved into emails as the internet came into existence. We had over 500 elves and elf friends on our mailing list when we shifted from publishing those letters to publishing our books in 2011. And now, of course, these letters have re-manifested as the articles often published on our blogs and also in our question and answer book series.

As we Silver Elves say, we’ve always loved the Elven Star and have numerous versions of it on our walls in our eald (elf home), and even on the back of this computer that we’re currently composing this very article upon. We also have various versions, from small to large and naked to jeweled, as amulets that we wear whenever we venture forth into the world. Of course, through the course of time, the faerie folk have taken it up and began calling it the Faerie star and they seem to love it as much as we do. There is just something about it that calls to the hearts of many of the elfae (elves and other magical folk from the Faerie Realm).

Yet, there is no obligation to like it or wear it or have it about your home. It either calls to you as an elfae or it doesn’t and it really doesn’t matter, neither to us or the world of spirit. What matters really is what speaks to you heart, soul and imagination as an elfin being. What symbols, if any, remind you of Elfin and our life in the Otherworldly realms of Enchantment?

We elves have our elven star, and perhaps you could say our elf ears, while the faeries have their wings, but no one is obligated to like the Elven/Faerie star, or wear elf ears or faerie wings, or like any particular symbol, fashion, or whatever. What we do expect is that you will find or create the fashion or symbols that speak to your heart and will use them to increase your connection to Elfin and help you evolve as an elf and hopefully inspire us and other kindred as well. How you do that is really up to you. And if you create or find a new symbol that speaks to many of us and extends our culture, then that is even better.

So let’s all celebrate Elven Star Day! Dress up if you like and do wear your elven star pendant if you have one and surely show your elven soulful spirit in your smile. Make a delicious Elfin feast and share it! Commune with the trees and all of Nature! Most of all enjoy yours’elf and if you wish, please join us in bringing in some of the magic below to manifest Elfin and a better world for All. For those who love the elven star, here is the meditation on the rays that we Silver Elves created, performed and published in 1986 in Circle Network News. We Silver Elves often draw an elfin star rune for further information to accompany our daily spiritual practice of throwing the I-Ching or in a tarot reading about a specific question for which we are in need of guidance. The Elfin Star Runes may also be used for your magic to write words in both English and Arvyndase, the magical language of the Silver Elves, and also in numbers.

All 49 runes or sigils for these runes can be laid upon an elven star and will be found to conform to the various lines of the star. Thus, we call them The Elfin Star Runes.

“It is also representative of the seven magical achievements that elevate us toward the realm of the Shining Ones that we call Elfin Faerie, which is to say these achievements illuminate our beings with light.”

The First Magical Achievement – Presence

“The Sense of the Presence is a realization of the Eternal within one’s s’elf. While our current form is transitory, the energy that composes it is Eternal, and within this energy and attached to it is our Potential S’elf, the Illuminated Shining One that exists in potential and that we are in the process of shaping and bringing into realization. We actualize it. As we become increasingly aware of our true s’elf, we become ever closer to Elfin, and our own Shining Nature. Sensing this presence within us, which is sensing our true nature and its eternal aspect, is a key achievement of the path.”

“At first, this Presence appears as being outside of us. We sense Elfin and the supra-dimensional realms as being separate from us, calling to us from afar; but in time we realize it is in fact our own s’elves calling to us. The Call comes from within and it comes from our future s’elves, who are ever existent within us, and ever striving toward realization. Again, at first this Presence within may seem separate from us but what it wants and what we want are really one and the same, and we come in time to realize, in fact, that we are really one and the same. When we remove all that is illusionary from our being, we are left with our own true s’elf; and that s’elf is the Eternal Presence that is ever a part of us, and ever us.”

“At times this Presence manifests in the form of fantasies and imagination concerning our potential. There is no harm in this, however, it is important that we are able to distinguish the differences between our fantasies about ours’elves, and the reality of our current level of development. Many when they are young elves spend a great deal of time in the fantasy, usually as a means of escaping reality, and proclaim far and wide their titles, powers and abilities, which are theirs in potential, but not as yet actualized. At some point one steps beyond this stage and begins the real work of making the potential real. This is a long process and requires great perseverance and many give up when they realize how very long the Quest is, and how very much effort it requires. In time, however, one realizes that no matter how long it takes one will never get there if one doesn’t begin and continue on persistently. This first step, while seemingly small, is really a huge leap forward.”

Were the Celts Faerie Folk?”

“. . . . from our point of view, the Celts are and were elfae folk and if they didn’t have that understanding of thems’elves at the time, we are more than happy to adopt them. For whatever our genetic makeup and background, many of us modern elfae peoples look at the ancient Celts and cannot help but feel, those are our fae peoples. We are descended from them in spirit, if not genetics.”

     The Celts are not generally seen as being faerie folk. Although, in The Book of Invasions that accounts the legends of the various peoples who lived in Ireland, they are represented by the Sons of Mil or Milesians, who were Gaels and thus a group of Celtic tribes who are said to have defeated the Tuatha De Danann or Sidhe folk and are often seen as the ancestors of the modern Irish. It is said that in a peace accord the Tuatha De went underground, (thus the people of the mounds) or into the hills and hidden valleys, etc.

     While the Gaels or Milesians are known to be actual people that lived in historical times, the Tuatha De are viewed as being a mythological people. But we ask: if the Tuatha De Danann didn’t exist then how did the Gaels overcome them in battle? Did they just make up a story about what great conquerors they were without actually fighting anyone? At the same time, we know that there were people in Ireland prior to the coming of the Gaels. That has been verified by genetics and archeology.

     In modern times, the Irish are known to be a mixture genetically of various races including earlier stone age peoples that were there long before the Gaels. We think it possible that the notion that we elfae folk are allergic to iron comes from the fact that the Celts had iron weapons and may have overcome earlier stone age peoples who didn’t have iron. Those earlier peoples would surely have been fae peoples, at least to our minds, and certainly so according to the legends and mythology of the Irish.

     Also, genetically, the Irish are closely related to the Scots and the Welsh, but also, and this is quite significant to our minds, to the Basque peoples of Northern Spain, who we see as one of the oldest elvish cultures of Europe. The Basque not only are known historically to have existed, like the Celtic tribal peoples, but continue to exist as a people and culture in the world.

     So, to our own elvish minds, not only were the people of Ireland who lived there previous to the coming of the Gaels, fae peoples but we also see the Gaels and Celts overall as being elfae folk. This is not so much a matter of genetics really but of spirit. For, while we find genetics fascinating, our elvish nature is really a matter of culture to our minds and our peoples come from various genetic lineages.

     The Celts, for instance, were noted for believing in and telling tales about we fae folk. It is often concluded that the Celts weren’t fae, because they believed in the fae, and because, as we pointed out, they were a historical people and thus de facto cannot be a mythological people as we elfae are seen to be according to the beliefs of Men. However, we are elves who also tell tales about elves and faeries and believe in elves and faeries and otherkin in our various forms and manifestations and we are living peoples in modern times, just as the Celts were. Men think we cannot be elfae folk because to their thinking our kind are fantasy beings, but we are of the opinion that the fact that there are myths about us and legends and lore and fantasies, doesn’t preclude us from being the very real elfae that we are. We may not live up to all their expectations and notions about us, but that doesn’t mean we don’t exist, only that we don’t exist in the way they think we should be according to their myths and legends and fantasies.

    And, we elfae, for the most part, love the Celtic tribal peoples, although the name Celt comes from a Greek word Keltoi meaning ‘barbarian’ (wild but not uncultured really) or ‘outsider’ (in contrast to Men, then yes and nearly always) or possibly ‘to cover or hide’ (thus the hidden peoples, much like we elfae are thought to be) ‘to heat’, or ‘to impel’ (the power of magic). We love Celtic culture, we love their love of triplicities, we love Celtic Knot work designs and their colorful dress. The fact that they were ‘headhunters’ is only to say that none or few of our ancestors were perfect. Certainly, we aren’t, although we aren’t headhunters. We’ve chilled quite a bit since then.

    When our various kindred answer our tribe questionnaire, in which we Silver Elves create a narrative about their particular elfin, faerie or other tribe (see our four books Elf Tribes; Faerie, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; Elves, Faerie, Fae and Otherkin Tribes; and Elfae Tribes), we have found that at least a quarter to a third of the respondents put down Celts in response to the question “what people does your tribe most resemble?” So, from our point of view, the Celts are and were elfae folk and if they didn’t have that understanding of thems’elves at the time, we are more than happy to adopt them. For whatever our genetic makeup and background, many of us modern elfae peoples look at the ancient Celts and cannot help but feel, those are our fae peoples. We are descended from them in spirit, if not genetics, and we are now headhunters in the modern sense of that word as being people on the lookout for individuals of talent and ability, which is to say other elfae.

In JESUS CHRIST ELF LORD: The Faerie Foundations of Christianity, Book One, we Silver Elves explore the connection and links between Christianity and the Elven Way, and the link between Jesus (in particular) and the ancient elvish peoples and cultures. We also explore in what ways modern elves might (if that is their inclination) practice both Christianity and the Elven Way without the two of them being in conflict with each other. In doing so, we will explore mostly the New Testament and the ideas there but also the Old Testament as well, since many modern Christians (as well as Christians through the ages despite the fact that Jesus proclaimed he was bringing them a New Testament) still reference the Old Testament as a guide for their beliefs, faith and behavior when it is convenient for them to do so. We shall embrace the same convenience here in this book.

However, it should also be noted that we Silver Elves are not only ‘not Christians’, we are also not experts on Christianity, nor make any claim to being so. Our concern is ever with our elfae peoples and their success and progress in the world and the realization of Elfin upon the Earth. Our point of view presented in this book is our own, although it has been as you will see, informed by various other authors and scholarly texts.

Many people come to the Elven Way, the Path of the Elves, and see thems’elves as elves, faeries, or otherkin of some type and yet still very much wish to continue to practice and belief in the religion they have been practicing up until this point. The reasons for this may be varied and we cannot say exactly why this is the case or if the motivation is the same for everyone. However, there is nothing about the Elven Way and its practice, unlike many religious beliefs, that would make one have to choose between being on the Elvish Path or practicing one’s chosen or inherited religious beliefs.

Jesus Christ Elf Lord, Book One deals primarily with the Christian faith and its various sects and religious beliefs and with those elfae folk who wish to practice both the Elven Way and Christianity. The reason for this is because, as we will explore here in this book, Christianity is really a syncretic religion. It was greatly influenced and arose out of Judaism (since Jesus was Jewish by descent not a Christian), which itself was greatly influenced by the beliefs and practices of the ancient Egyptians and the Zoroastrians of Persia. However, as Christianity moved into the West it encountered and in some ways incorporated Pagan beliefs as well as established (or at least its practitioners did) a relationship with the ancient Fairy Faith of the Celtic (and other) Peoples. It was the goal of the Christian faiths to absorb the Faerie Faith, but we Silver Elves believe and show in this book, that the opposite is more likely to happen in the long run and it is we Faerie and Elfin and the journey upon the Elfin Path that will absorb and incorporate Christianity.

“”Faerie Cross”

“Staurolite stones are often referred to as Fairy Crosses and can be found in Switzerland, Russia, Australia, Brazil and the eastern United States. They develop into a natural cross when they are formed (not always a perfect cross, sometimes more of an ‘x’ but a cross nonetheless) and because of their cross structure, they are often also associated with Jesus and the cross he was crucified upon, which is so popular among Christians. Some say that they are called Faerie Crosses or Fairy Crosses because the faeries wept when Jesus was crucified (we bet they did) and their tears formed these stones, not only in Europe apparently, but all the way to the Americas that hadn’t even been discovered yet by the Pagan Norse or the later Christians and which was inhabited exclusively at that time by the First Nations Peoples. Although, we fae do sometimes engage in a form of long-distance telepathy, so it wasn’t entirely out of the question that the Faeries of Europe telegraphed (so to speak) their mourning for Jesus across the Atlantic to the faeries here who we imagine probably responded by saying, “Who’s Jesus?” And the Faeries of Europe replied, “We’ll explain when we get there.””

“This association of faeries and Christianity, in the persona of Jesus (the favorite god form of Christianity), is interesting to us. We cannot know exactly how it came about, although the symbolic link between a cross and Jesus is fairly clear. But how did the Faeries come to be associated with the cross?”

“It is, of course, possible that the link between Jesus and the Faeries, via this stone, happened sometime later, after the rise of Christianity among those who still believed in the Fairy Faith in order to make the transition to Christianity more acceptable to those believers and who, in some cases, still told tales of their experiences with the faerie folk. Although, honestly, we think this is rather unlikely.”

“Instead, we are of the opinion, although it is only a hypothesis that we have no way to confirm really, that Staurolite stones were already called Fairy stones and seen as having mystical power before the coming of Christianity and that those who converted to Christianity carried this belief over with them, linking it to Jesus as a way of merging their religious and their ancestral mystical (or what people would call superstitious or magical) beliefs together. Although, for our own part, we don’t really see a great deal of difference (and they probably didn’t either) in believing in faeries and believing in Jesus, except that, let’s face it, faeries are a lot more fun for the most part (well, for us anyway, for some others, less so). Although, if you have a party and run out of liquor, Jesus is the guy to call.”

“But if we accept the idea that faeries were already associated with this stone and it was called the fairy stone before the rise of Christianity, how would that be possible since clearly the cross is linked to Jesus? Why would faeries be seen as being linked to a stone cross?”

“The fact is that the cross, in the form of the crossroads, either in a more exact cross similar to the one Jesus was crucified on or one that is like an ‘x’, has long been associated with the supernatural or, we might say, Nature in its mystical and magical state (since we Silver Elves don’t really believe in supernatural other than the way that say Einstein believed that the laws of Nature and the Universe that apply upon the Earth don’t necessarily apply out in the cosmos). Supernatural to us is higher Nature or more subtle Nature but it is still part of the natural world and as such can be discovered, understood and worked with. This is, after all, the basic underlying theory of magic and illuminates our ability to transform our lives and our world through magic.”

“Of course, these days, the crossroads are often associated with making a deal with the devil or some demon in exchange for some ability or power. However, that is also due to the influence of Christianity that presented we elfae folk as being demons or fallen angels, who are not so bad as to deserve hell but too incorrigible to remain in heaven (see Fairy Faith in the Celtic Countries by Evans Wentz and Strange Terrain by Barbara Rieti).”

“But prior to Christianity, there weren’t any demons, per se (there were, however, Greek Daemons or inspiring spirits who were not necessarily evil), there were also Monsters and surely fae sorts that were deemed in Scottish (Gaels, again) lore to be Unseelie or predatory and hostile toward Mankind. And, often, even the best of us elfae were seen as being temperamental, unpredictable and prone to be tricky. But it was we elfae folk (not demons) who granted wishes or musical talent or other abilities in tales and lore about us in the pre-Christian times and sometimes thereafter (which would make us more like daemons). And we didn’t do that in exchange for someone’s soul, as is said to be the case in Christian lore, but in thanks for them having helped us, or in exchange for saving us when they seemed inclined to do otherwise, or most often, just because we happened to find the individual pleasing and wished to uplift them due to our love and admiration for their being.”

“And this was not to ensnare their souls in order to drag them down to suffer in hell forever. Although, we are sometimes said to keep them enchanted in Faerie, which can be a place of endless wonder. But enchanted is the operational word here and Faerie is hardly hell (although it has sometimes been associated with the underworld, the world of the dead) and once having tasted the fruits of Faerie, and all its delights, as the lore tells us, who would wish to return to the normal world anyway?”

Elf Cross

“The Elf Cross is found on round silver amulets that are supposed to be worn around one’s neck. This was a tradition that could be found in southern Sweden and in Denmark, and was mostly popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The elf cross amulet was believed to be able to prevent and cure diseases.”

“Of course, since we elves and fae are sometimes accused of causing illnesses, via elf shot, elf wind (caused, it is said, by our bad breath, now that’s a bit rude) or elf blast and other means it is quite possible that the elf cross was an apotropaic magic used to ward off elfin magic in the same way that a cross is sometimes shown to ward off vampires. Since the use of this elf cross is more recent and occurred well after the acceptance of Christianity in Sweden and Denmark, this would seem to be a logical explanation.”

“However, notice that the Elf Cross, like the Staurolite Faerie Cross stone, is an equal armed cross and not a cross, as the Christian cross is, that has a vertical bar that is longer than the horizonal bar. And where the crossing bar is near the top on the Christian cross, on the Elf Cross it is exactly in the middle of each bar so there is only the vaguest resemblance with the Christian cross. Besides, if they wished to have a Christian cross to ward off us elfae folk, why didn’t they just use the ones that they already had hanging in their churches and homes? Which so many people today wear as an evocative or invocative amulet around their necks. This would seem to be a far more logical custom if, in fact, the Elf Cross was meant to be the Christian cross and was meant to keep one safe, as a Christian soul, from we elfae folk, who are sometimes said to be ‘soulless’ beings (inaccurate and also a bit rude).”

“The fact that it is formed like the Fairy Cross is rather suggestive to us of the possibility that this cross was not meant as an amulet to ward off elfin magic but rather to evoke it while, at the same time, appearing to go along with the Christian populace and their prejudices. In an area where Fairy Crosses were not so available, this would be a practical hedgewitch solution to the problem.”

“And note that the Elven Star, which was introduced to the otherkin and fae community by the Elf Queen’s Daughters in their Elf Magic Mail (see our two books, vol. 1 & vol. 2, of that title) back in the 1970s and which we passed on in our own Magical Elven Love Letters (see our three vols. of those letters) is now commonly referred to as the Fairy Star, which is a bit of an inversion of the movement from Fairy Cross to Elf Cross if our assumption is correct.”

“At the same time, there is no question that on the outside of the cross between the arms and sometimes on the back as well, were inscribed Jesus’ name as well as other Christian evocations. Which suggests to us that this may not have been a rejection of Christianity nor of the Faerie/Elfin faith, but rather a merging of the two, which is really the theme of this book. They wished to evoke Elfin magic but didn’t wish to reject Jesus in doing so but to include him. Which considering his elven heritage from the Scythians (see The Realms of the Rings Lords by Laurence Gardner) and relationship therefore to the Sidhe of Ireland was quite perceptive of them in a sort of intuitive, psychic and mystical way.”

“Like the Fairy Cross, the Elf Cross to us indicates the mystical, magical crossroads where the otherworldly and the normal world encounter each other or perhaps where the Christian and the Faerie world come together. To wear an Elf Cross would be to summon a meeting at the crossroads, a meeting between the world of possibility and the world of material realization. It is a place of opportunity where one may take another road, perhaps that ‘road less traveled’, meet someone of significance that would bring healing and magic into one’s life and even perhaps lead one to an adventure, or at least the possibility of embarking upon an adventure. However, like Frodo and Bilbo, one still has a choice whether one wishes to seize the opportunity or not. Not all of us are looking to go adventuring. Some of us are quite happy to stay comfortably at home.”

“Remember, as well, that the Elf Cross, as it was traditionally made, was engraved upon a silver circle. Silver has ever been associated with the elfin, far more than gold, which is so desired by men, and the circle is, as always, an association with the Faerie Circle. If this cross was meant to protect one from elves, especially from water elves, which is to say Unseelie nixies as the traditions have it, why make it of silver in a circle? And yet, there is no question that some did, in fact, use this as a ward against elf folk, although we also have to remember that elves, faeries, fae, nixies, dwarfs, etc. were all designations that were frequently used interchangeably (see The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs by Claude Lecouteux) and we Seelie elves and fae were often lumped in with the Unseelie in many people’s minds. All fae, to the minds or some people, are untrustworthy.”

“Interestingly, by tradition, the silver for this amulet was to be begged from one’s neighbors according to certain specific rules and made and delivered to one following designated ceremonies (magic). It could not be bought or sold and often the person was supposed to keep it and wear it to their grave. Was that to keep them from going to Faerie after their death, as some lore has it, or to increase their odds of getting there? And while silver is wonderful, certainly we elfin hedge-witches could and would make an Elf Cross amulet on whatever material we found or had available (see our book Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic). This would be particularly nice for those elves who wished to merge their elvish being with the practice of their Christian faith. But non-Christian elfin could also wear an elf cross with other spirits’ names or sigils, rather than Christian ones, inscribed between the arms.”

“It is possible, and we very much like this idea, that the Elf Cross was used or certainly could be used as a ward against Unseelie elfin magics, while at the same time evocating bright and positive Seelie elvish magics. That notion certainly appeals to our own elvish minds. Dark Magics be gone; Bright Magics come on.”

What Do Elves Mean by the Term Otherworldly? And Is Elfin a Place or State of Mind?

“When we Silver Elves define otherworldly, we are not talking entirely about imaginary worlds so much as visionary worlds, worlds that could be if we were, or most of us were, more spiritually developed, intelligent, loving and cooperative. When we speak of otherworldly, we mean a world that exists for some of us because we make it real in our own lives. It is otherworldly because it is so different in essence, culture and behavior from the normal cultures (in their various forms) that the mass of humanity embraces and believe to be the only real worlds because they believe in them. . . . We could call our realms alternate worlds, although we very much like the term otherworldly with its combination of spiritual, imaginal, mystical, magical and supernatural connotations. Which is part of why we elves are otherworldly beings in the first place. We embrace what others reject and we do so completely with all our hearts, minds and souls. . . . wherever we elfae folk go or abide there goes our spirits as well and there manifests Elfin/Faerie expressed outwardly by the radiance of our inner elvish being.”

     

What Do Elves Mean by the Term Otherworldly?

We Silver Elves commonly use the word otherworldly to describe Faerie and Elfin. If you look it up in the dictionary, otherworldly is defined as a world that is imaginary or spiritual. It is interesting to our elvish minds that imaginary worlds and spiritual worlds are essentially defined as the same thing, as though things spiritual are really imaginary. However, that is to be expected in this most material of ages where nearly everything is defined by physicality and our elven and faerie-ness are often ascribed to physical features and genetic lineage. Although, while Men seem to put spiritual in the same category as imaginary, by this definition, we doubt that they would do the opposite, which is to posit that things imaginary are necessarily spiritual, which would be a more elvish and otherworldly way of looking at things.

     Some dictionaries define otherworldly as referring to a world beyond death or beyond our present reality. Although, they also carry the meaning of imaginary realms as well. This is quite in keeping, in its way, with the notion that we elfae folk live longer than normal humans or that we are immortal or close to being immortal. Immortal, we suppose, in the way that vampires are conceived of as being immortal in the sense that they will live forever unless they are killed or commit suicide, or forget to use their suntan lotion. What we might call provisional immortality, or immortality, sort of.

     Part of this idea of otherworldliness derives from the fact that our elfae peoples were absorbed, for the most part, by dominating and dominant cultures that violently overran us ages ago. So far back, in fact, that our people have been turned into myths and legends to the point where some people, in fact most people, in the modern age question whether our peoples ever existed at all. This despite the clear and evident fact that we modern elfae assert our heritage very strongly. Of course, they just think that we are crazy or imagining things, or even suffering from Schizotypal Personality Disorder (see our blog article on this here) for believing in things that are not accepted by the mass of humanity. For truth in the world is required to be popular to be accepted. 

     For many elfae, this results in an effort to find their ancestry in the material world and to create graphs or charts tracing their lineage back to the Scythians or some other peoples that are seen as the source and inspiration for many of the legends about elves, fae, faeries and otherkin of various sorts.

     We Silver Elves, however, as we’ve made quite clear often to the chagrin of those who insist upon a materialistic basis for the elfae nature, are of the opinion that we are elfin spirits incarnating purposely into humanoid bodies and our physical lineage is not utterly germane to our true natures any more than the car that we drive defines our personality. Although some people in the world would believe this to be so.

     Not that we reject the idea that some individuals are descended from the Scythians, the Phrygian or certain Norse or Scandinavian folk who were considered elfin or aelfar. But we trace our own elvish lineage back further beyond those people who were, really, dominator cultures, to those even earlier folks who lived in partnership societies, where males and females were considered equals and women were not seen as being somehow weaker or inferior or needing to be subdued and controlled by men as was the case with many of those ancient peoples and which persists today. This perspective still exists very strongly in some cultures in the modern world but manifests also in certain ways in many of those cultures that are seen as advanced, developed and supposed enlightened in the world. First world nations, as they like to call themselves. Note that the United States of America has never had, up to this writing, a woman president. Let that sink in.

Is Elfin a Place or a State of Mind?

     Most people think of Elfin and Faerie as places that are physical, in a way, while still being of an etheric nature. Physical but otherworldly, in a parallel dimension that one can step into if one can find the portal, just as one could step across the border from their own country into another. And this idea is certainly reinforced and, in many ways, prompted by various stories about elfae folk and our realms in legend, lore, myth and fiction.

     The ancient Celts and others believed that Faerie was the land of the dead (see Fairy Faith in the Celtic Countries by Walter Evans-Wentz and The Hidden History of Elves & Dwarfs: Avatars of Invisible Realms by Claude Lecouteux). After dying here, one took up life there in a more paradisiacal realm and when one died there one returned to this world again. Faerie and Elfin were more dreamlike in that way, which is to say that, just like dreams when one is dreaming, it all is very real, only potentially more fantastic.

     If that is the case then the portal to Faerie would be death in most cases, although there are exceptions to this on both sides of the equation as is evidenced in this world by a belief in ghosts or the appearance of a loved one who has just died prior to passing over and the idea of near-death experience where one goes into or approaches the other world but then returns. Plus, there is the fact that those who have died can still appear in our dreams, although often in altered bodies that while not resembling their earthly appearance are still clearly those individuals manifesting in the Dreamtime.

     Of course, not everyone who dies would go to Faerie. Only those of elfae inclination and nature and association would do so. Men would go to a world of their own as is indicated by the Norse belief in separate realms on the World Tree. Men, most likely, even in that more ethereal dreamlike world wouldn’t realize there was a Faerie at all. Men who deny the existence of we elfae folk in this world are unlikely to acknowledge us in that one either. In their dream world, we don’t exist.

     Our concern here, for the most part, however, is not about the part of Faerie that exists in the Between (see our book Beyond Death: The Elfin Book of the Dead. Ascending towards the Faerie Realms through Progressive Incarnations), but about manifesting Elfin and Faerie in this world, which is, in that sense, the portal to living in Faerie in that other world. For it is those who manifest as elfae folk in this world, especially those who have the courage to do so somewhat openly, who are surely bound for Faerie and Elfin when they pass into the otherworldly dream realms.

     And in this world, this more material realm, Elfin and Faerie do not exist (as yet or currently) as permanent stationary places, as say Japan exists or France. But then even those countries and, in fact, every other, have changed their boundaries from time to time through history and in the long run it is not the place that makes the country but the people and their culture. If we are to believe the ancient tales of our people, Ireland and the British Isles and Western France where once ours but, for the most part, passed from our hands long ago.

     Thus, for us Silver Elves, Elfin and Faerie are primarily states of being and consciousness that exist in potential in many places, particularly in Nature, but manifest prominently wherever we are expressing our elvish natures. The magical realms are far more fluid, and much like Nirvana is not a permanent place but exists as we can achieve the state of mind to do so. Think of Faerie and Elfin not as countries, although there are surely those who wish that they were countries, but rather like ships or even buses on or in which elfae folk live. The ship may be docked or the bus parked in a particular spot but they can also move about and wherever the elfae move, there also Faerie/Elfin manifests. If the ship sinks or the bus dies, we inhabit another, continuing to manifest Elfin through our lives and magic.

     Therefore, wherever we elfae folk go or abide there goes our spirits as well and there manifests Elfin/Faerie expressed outwardly by the radiance of our inner elvish being. We could, theoretically, buy land and call that Elfin but when we passed from this world, we would still be taking most of our entourage of spirits with us and that land may or may not pass into the hands elfae who would continue to manifest Elfin there, which is to say here in the material realm. And inevitably in the vast realms of time, that land would surely return to Nature and eventually into the Universe, which is to say the Void, anyway. And we elfae folk, wherever we might be, would continue on shining, as best we are able, as we manifest our beloved Elfin.

Short definition of “The Elven Way” by The Silver Elves

“The Elven Way is the spiritual path of the Elves. It is not a religion. While all elves are free to pursue whatever spiritual path they desire, or not as the case may be, The Silver Elves are magicians and follow no particular religious dogma. We do however believe in all the Gods and Goddesses, (also Santa Claus [to whom we’re related], the tooth fairy [distant cousins] and the Easter or Ostara Bunny [no relation]) and try to treat them all with due respect. The Elven Way promotes the principles of Fairness, that is to say both Justice, Elegance and Equal Opportunity and Courtesy that is respectful in its interactions and attitude toward all beings, great or small. We understand the world as a magical or miraculous phenomena, and that all beings, by pursuing their own true path, will become whomever they truly desire to be. Our path is that of Love and Magic and we share our way with all sincerely interested individuals.”

     “To remind us ever of the need to rise up and lift our others with us, to have compassion for others even those who oppose us, to endeavor to understand the true natures and motivations not only of ours’elves but all others, the Shining Ones send us Sages who appear in many forms, in nearly all cultures and speak though various social and religious philosophies encouraging us to strive toward the light, to seek ever the good of all, and to further spiritual evolution in all that we do. We elves call this the Way of the Fair or The Elven Way. The Path is never-ending, the Way is ever before us, the Choice is always now, and we are eternally evolving. This is the Elven Way. The enculturation and other protections that shield the normal folk from the realization of other dimensions are lifted when the elf steps upon the path and begins to tread the Elven Way. The Elven Way gives our lives meaning and purpose. We come to understand who we truly are, that is that we are spirits evolving and we establish a purpose in our lives, which generally might be expressed as aiding ours’elves and all others to fulfill ours’elves perfectly. That is to say, we become who are truly are, which is who we truly desire to be. Remember, we ever wish to be our own true s’elves as perfectly as possible, which means among other things to be happy and successful forever, to live Happily Ever After.”

Are Elves Related to Angels?

   

      What most folks would call angels, we Silver Elves call the Shining Ones, although they are really quite different in some important ways we will explain in this article. The Shining Ones are our elven ancestors who have evolved through time, advanced in their magic, and matured in their spiritual development and have progressed to more powerful and more subtle dimensions of being, where they are not only closer to the heart of Elfin but are in realms where their thoughts and intentions are more quickly realized and manifested and thus they are more magically powerful. They do not need, in the way that we do, the buffer that exists between our thoughts and magical realization. Their thoughts are clearer, more focused and much less inclined toward the inner conflict and debate that many of us in these more material seeming realms encounter. And the fulfillment of their wishes can be nearly instantaneous, whereas ours may take a while, but that is generally for our own good until we have more precise control over our own wills and thoughts. The Shining Ones are more on the line of Tolkien’s conception of elves in their most advanced stages than most of we elven currently manifesting upon the Earth are as yet able to be.

     Unlike the concept of angels, who are created ‘as is’ by their god and are ever unchanging, unless they fail to obey and therefore go ‘bad’, the Shining Ones were once rather like us. Once children, so to speak, and we, for our own part, will eventually evolve to the point of being much like they are now. Of course, by that point, it is quite possible that they will have evolved even further and will be deeper or closer to the source that is the Divine Magic from which all things arise and which connects all that is. Thus the Divine Magic may be defined, quite rightly, as love. Which is why, to the elves, love and magic are seen as being nearly synonymous.

     Elves don’t, for the most part, have the idea, which so many egocentric individuals have, that the Shining Ones are our personal Guardian Angels. Which is to say, we don’t believe there is one angel/Shining One who is assigned to follow us around our entire lives and guide us. There are Shining Ones who are related to us and by that we mean really related in this sense that they are our relatives, our ancestors, cousins and siblings, in a manner of speaking, and so forth and they do look out for us, as say our parents may look out for us when we are very young. But the more evolved we become, the older we get in a sense, the less they need to watch over us and the more responsibility we assume for our own lives and evolution.

     And as we proceed even further, we assume responsibility not only for our s’elves but for our others as well and in doing that we truly begin to step into the realms of the Shining Ones and become as they are. This is the way to Elfin evolution. The way to the evolution of our s’elves as individual soulful spirits and the way by which elves may attain the true royalty of our heritage. Would you be a Shining One? Take care of your others. Would you be an Elf Lord or Lady, Elfin Prince or Princess, Elvish King or Queen, look after all of your kindred, nurture, support and empower them. Would you be a great spirit? A great soul? An Elfae wizard, druid, wise one? Do all that you can to foster our kindred, each and everyone, and the elfae nature in everyone and live your life in such a way as to be an example of true elfinness on each and every day. This is the Elven Way. This is the path into the realms of the Angelic Shining Ones.

     You may ask of the oracle to give you a general reading of what is to come in your life, in which case you will use all the tokens. Or you may wish to ask a very specific question, like, “What is my power in this situation?” In which case, you may wish to only use the Personal Charm. Or you may ask, “In what fashion will the spirits help me?” and then the Otherworldly Charm might be best. From an Elven Perspective: Could One have been an Elemental in a Past Life?

“Were we once elementals? Surely, we were. We may well have been also fertilized eggs, that grew into a frog-like shape floating in a sort of aquatic environment of amniotic fluid and so on. We have developed as spirits and continue to do so. Growing more aware, more conscious, more intelligent, more experienced (Universal Street Smarts) and more magical as elfae beings. And as we live our lives consciously and intentionally as the elfae we truly are, we increase this magic and it’s power manifesting Elfin and Faerie upon the Earth and among the Stars as we were ever meant to do. And in doing so, evolve even more and more quickly. So, beloved, be your true elfae s’elf and help others to do the same, for we are on a great quest and adventure that extends through the lifetimes and throughout the Universe.”

If you read the esoteric teachings and theories of Blavatsky in The Secret Doctrine, vols. 1 & 2 (which is essentially formed from her interpretation of esoteric Buddhist lore), then the theory is that all beings that are currently incarnate and those that have evolved beyond physical manifestation for the most part into the realms of the Shining Ones, have progressed through every level of physical manifestation. Rather like that game that parents sometimes (or used before mobile video games) play with their young children on long road trips, called Animal, Vegetable and Mineral. This is to say that we, as spirit, in order to gain mastery over the physical plane, which is also to say master our ability to shape matter and incarnate within it in a conscious fashion, have and continue to go through the series of incarnations into various forms. Usually seen in a progressive fashion as first mineral, then vegetative, then animal developing into humanoid form and beyond that ethereal being with increasing consciousness and awareness. This is all theory, of course, but it is a theory that is not only rooted in the esoteric lore of Asian peoples but also very much reflected in the beliefs of Western peoples, and particularly to be found in faerie legend and lore.

Faerie folk are often accorded by lore to be nature spirits or associated with elementals of various sorts. Gnomes are said to be earth spirits or earth elementals. Undines (which are a type of water faerie like mermaids, naiads and nixies) are water elementals. Sylphs (which are a sort of faerie) are air elementals, although some people call them zephyrs. And salamanders (not sure how they got in there) are fire spirits although some magicians associate them with djinn (see Helping Yourself with White Witchcraft by Al. G. Manning). Having salamanders among these faerie spirits is rather like having various types of apples associated with the other elementals and then having an orange linked to fire.

For our own part, we Silver Elves don’t associate the elementals with earth, water, air and fire but rather with states of being, thus solid, liquid, gaseous and plasma (see our book The Elements of Elven Magic: A New View of Calling the Elementals Based Upon the Periodic Table of Elements), but that fits perfectly with our view that we are primarily spirits manifesting in humanoid bodies and are only temporarily physical beings evolving toward eventually becoming beings that manifest in bodies of light in a world of our creation that is very much like lucid dreaming. It is still an illusion (as Buddhist would define it) like the material world, but an illusion more of our own creation.

The Elements of Elven Magic:
A New View of Calling the Elementals Based Upon the Periodic Table of Elements

The idea that we elfae were or could still be more elemental in our being and that we may evolve through various levels of manifestation can also be seen in the legends of the Cait Sith or cat fae and the cù-sìth, singular, and coin-sìth, plural, who are faerie dogs. You will also note the various púca (pooka, phouka) that are shapeshifting fae and become dogs, cats, rabbits (see the 1950’s film Harvey with Jimmy Stewart) or whatever but seem to have a particular fondness, according to the lore, for being horses (see Faery in Shadow by C. J. Cherryh). Although, here we may also find Groot’s friend, the quite clever racoon being Rocket of comic book and movie fame.

As far as vegetative life, there are a number of trees that have been strongly associated with faerie folk and numerous herbs and plants as well, but there are also the wood nymphs, dryads and other tree and plant spirits that are faerie creatures that are associated with vegetable life. In modern times in science fiction and fantasy, we have Groot and Tolkien’s Ents as conscious tree spirits.

In terms of the mineral world, it is dwarves due to their caves that we find so powerfully associated with the rock, stone, crystal and gem world, but also trolls, who are sometimes said to turn into stone if exposed to light and mountain giants who are essentially rock people, which is to say mobile rocks. And in the superhero world we have The Thing, called Ben Grimm in his human form of the Fantastic Four.

For our own part, we Silver Elves have always seen all of life as being, each in their own way, conscious. Rocks may not have the same consciousness as we have obtained, but have their own sort of consciousness that will grow and evolve in time, just as ours did. All of life surely is imbued with the Divine Magic, in potential, and all of life is moving toward its perfected, which is to say, most magical state of being. We are not born ‘as is’ as some religious doctrines proclaim, live our lives then die and go to heaven or hell forever, but continually are evolving, learning and growing spirits.

And we also invite you to read about one of our newest published book. . . THE FAERIE SONG ORACLE: The Elven Way of Singing Down Magic of the Fae is so named because it is an original elfin oracle system based upon the solfège or solfeggio system, also called solfa, solfeo, which is used as a music education method in the West to teach aural skills, pitch and the sight-reading of the music scale. That scale is Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol or So, La and Te, with another Do representing a higher octave, at the end. We have presented these notes in this oracle according to the way they would be spelled in Arvyndase, which is the Silver Elves magical elfin language. And, therefore, these musical sounds/notes would be spelled: DO, RAE, ME, FA, SOL, LA, and TE, which as you can see only differs in one instance. The pronunciation, however, is the same. The Faerie Song Oracle book is meant to be used as an oracle, but it is also a book of magic. Thus, the sounds can be sung together to create a particular magic that either heightens the power of a boon or dispels unwanted influences. The Silver Elves associate these notes with each of the points of the seven-pointed acute angled Elven Star that many people call the Faerie Star. So you might consider that in drawing the faerie song oracle you are dealing with the power of two of the points of the elven star combined (each point signified by a different note) or one of the points in its pure form (if both of the notes that you draw are the same, as say when you get Rae-Rae as a response). How Do Elves Effectively Interact with the Shining Ones?

“. . . .the Shining Ones are conceived of by we Silver Elves as spirits who have progressed through the process of evolution. And in doing so and through great effort and devotion to development of their being and quite often personal sacrifice on the behalf of others, the Shining Ones have ascended into the subtler yet more expansive dimensions of spiritual being.”

     The Shining Ones for the elves and elfae folk are the equivalent of what most people think of as angels, or what Tolkien would have called the Ainur, which consisted of the Valar and the Maiar. Tolkien’s is a somewhat simpler derivation of the Angelic Hierarchy in traditional Christian angelology, consisting of Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions or Lordships, Virtues or Strongholds or Authorities, Principalities or Rulers, Archangels and Angels. Note, angels are the lowest of the hierarchy with Seraphim being the highest.

     We say the Shining Ones are similar to angels . . . except, instead of the Shining Ones being individuals who were created by some god as is (like in both Tolkien’s and the traditional Christian view) and are thus never changing and are merely representing powers that are obedient (for the most part) to their god’s will, the Shining Ones are conceived of by we Silver Elves as spirits who have progressed through the process of evolution. And in doing so and through great effort and devotion to development of their being and quite often personal sacrifice on the behalf of others, the Shining Ones have ascended into the subtler yet more expansive dimensions of spiritual being.

     So it is that we could interact with the Shining Ones in the way many religious folk communicate with their chosen or inherited deity, saint or angel through the use of prayer, burning candles, creating a magic table (what most folks would call an altar) and so forth, pleading for their intercession into some aspect of our lives. And waiting and trusting an having faith that they will help us.

     From an elven point of view, praying is merely a form of spell casting, although generally with a more whiny and subservient attitude rather than the more confident and will-backed power that is generally used in conjuration. The religious use of magic is along the lines of oh please won’t you do this and the magical view is more we have confidence that this will be done and in your ability to do it. At the same time, we Silver Elves are rather fond of candle burning, magic tables set for various purposes and gifts to the spirits that we seek a relationship with. This is rather like the fact that if we are invited to someone’s house to dinner we might bring a dessert or a bottle of wine, or if we invite them, as we invite the Shining Ones into our lives, we provide the meal for them as our honored guests. We wish to reciprocate for their positive influence in our lives and let them know that we appreciate them and seek closer union and friendship.

     Of course, one could use our book An Elfin Book of Spirits and evoke or invoke the Shining Ones who are listed in that tome in an informal fashion or use ceremonial magick (see our Book of Elven Magick, volume 1 & and also volume 2) in order to draw their attention to one’s life, one’s struggles and one’s aspirations. And we Silver Elves have certainly done this in our lives and continue to do so from time to time when need, vision or purpose arises. We are essentially elven hedgewitches (see our book Elven Hedgewitchery And Found Magic) and our magic is very eclectic, impromptu and ad hoc most of the time.

     Ultimately, however, the Shining Ones are not interested in our prayers nor are they all that interested in our devotion to them. They are not interested in having their egos fanned. Rather, they seek to encourage us to develop the powers and skills that they have obtained, or one’s similar that are suited to our individual natures. We do this by following their example, devoting our own energy to making our own lives better and the lives of those around us and most importantly attempting to develop our own s’elves in every conceivable way.

     It is this concerted attention to improvement, combined with regular and consistent practice and action, that best connects us to the Shining Ones and truly draws their attention toward us and their blessings upon us and our lives. Prayers and incantations, evocations and invocations are not ineffectual entirely, they simply tend to be less effective than direct action. In some ways, for the Shining Ones, they are like commercials one might see on television or even a billboard or even that one gets in one’s snail mail or email that most of which gets immediately consigned to the trash.

     Real action, on the other hand, makes the Shining Ones stand up and pay attention. Just as we tend to pay attention to those we see who are actually doing something. Even if they are not doing it entirely well, we are inclined to watch and perhaps moved to offer suggestions as to how to do things better if, indeed, we have any or know what we are talking about. For there are those in the world who are ever eager to give advice about things of which they have little or no knowledge at all. The Shining Ones, however, have been through it all thems’elves and they know what they are talking about and have the power to back up their advice with energy.

   Make progress in your own spiritual life, dear Kindred, which is to say the life of your spirit, empowering yours’elf in every positive way and the Shining Ones will surely pay heed, nod their approval and do what they can to assist you. And then signs, blessings and magic will just seem to come your way, seemingly by accident, although this will be no accident at all. Synchronicities will occur as they do when one is on their true path and following what we elves call The Elven Way.

          BEYOND DEATH: The Elfin Book of the Dead by The Silver Elves is a guide for those who are dealing with the recently deceased or dying, as well as for anyone who would like to begin consciously preparing for their own demise. There are two parts to Beyond Death — the first part explores the theoretical aspects concerning death and the Between worlds from an elven perspective, and the second part of this book has practical admonitions and spells based on the Elven Star (7 pointed acute hexagram) that can help a person who is in the process of transitioning from one incarnation to another.

     Part One of Beyond Death explores death and the Between states as it relates to a variety of topics including: elven magic, immortality of elves, raising the dead, lucid dreaming, the experience of the between state, the Death card in the Tarot, the stages of grief and dealing with death, death and amnesia, the fae descent into matter, Faerie and the Nether-realms, elven perspectives on how various myths and religions view death, the wild hunt, banshees and black dogs, Day of the Dead, Sitting Shiva and Shiva, astral travel and the relationship of death to teraphim, nature spirits and animism.

     It is nearly impossible to know exactly what you will encounter in the Between since our experience there depends greatly upon our own inner being and consciousness, especially our subconscious being, our right brained symbolic consciousness that manifests in dream states and during the Between. However, the general principles and developmental stages are rather universal so we have fashioned from an elven perspective spells and admonitions of guidance so that we might aid anyone who is transiting the realms of manifestation. These spells (see Part Two of the book) are linked to the Elven Star and its seven points and seven intersections or interstices (so 14 in all) and the energies they represent. They are designed to be spoken over 14 days (one spell each day) as you contemplate or more importantly feel (if you knew and have feelings for the individual you wish to guide) the person on whose behalf you are casting the spell. You might wish to set up a temporary magic table, what most people call an altar, with photos or items reminiscent of the individual(s) for this purpose. These spells and admonitions relate to energies of the 14 realms of manifestation: The Red Diamond World, Blue Wave World, Realm of the Wondrous Yellow Orb, Realm of the Rainbow Bridge, Emerald Green World, Orange Glowing World, Royal Purple Mist Realm, Lavender Lotus World, Deep Green Forest World, Golden Light of the Shining Realms, Silver Realms of Moonlight Being, Realm of the Amber Orbs of Translucent Wonder, Opalescent Realm of Radiant Being, and Pure Clear Realm of Radiant Light. We purposely put the 14 day spells and admonitions (ritual) for the recently deceased loved one as the Part Two in this book so it may be easy to find when you need it for guiding your loved one through the Between.

Chapter 2: Are Elves Immortal?

     “Most stories about the fae folk say that we are immortal or very long lived. Of course, that’s also what is said about vampires (what we Silver Elves think of as dark elves, sometimes but not always of an unseelie variety) until someone plunges a stake through their heart or binds them into the sunlight and the light turns them to ashes and dust that blows away with the wind. This destroys their body, surely, but where does their spirit go?”

     “Elves, too, as we say, are sometimes seen as being immortal up until the point when we, like vampires, get killed, although the methods for killing us are often less idiosyncratic than it is for vampires. Still, if your body can be killed, it’s not exactly immortal as a cohesive unit, just potentially long lived and we each strive for immortality not only of the spirit but of the body as well.”

     “There is a reason that, while we know ours’elves to be spirits, we think of our bodies as our own and a part of us. It is true that we have, in a sense, commandeered energy from the Universe and formed it into our body and that body changes, shedding skin, hair and other things, all its cells being replaced periodically throughout our lives, and yet it still remains one unit while we are in it. Our body may change utterly through the course of a life and yet still we remain ours’elves. We are learning through the vehicles of incarnation how to construct bodies that will last and endure and become a part of us in a more permanent fashion. In a certain sense, the union of our spirit and our body is a marriage of sorts. The fact that for most of us, as yet, that marriage ends in divorce/death is only to say that we have much to learn about magic and need a good deal more time and effort in order to increase our own powers of endurance, healing and manifestation.”

     “As it is, most of us elves currently incarnated into human bodies do not have immortal material bodies. We die, like everyone else, but often, but not always, we do have a basic tendency to live a bit longer than normal human beings and to appear younger than our age as compared to most of the normal folk around us. But that may have less to do with us being elven than the fact that we also are inclined to have better diets, to exercise more and in general take better care of ours’elves and our bodies than Men often do theirs. But those things, in themselves, are surely elven traits, and it wouldn’t hurt Men at all to follow our example in this regard and in that way potentially live longer while becoming just a bit more elven. Of course, toning down their aggressive tendencies and their inclination to go to war with nearly everyone about nearly anything, would probably serve to extend their lives as well.”

     “Although, it is rather paradoxical that Men, who frequently think that they have only one life to live, so often treat their bodies with such rough disregard, while we elves, who know ours’elves to be essentially spirit, nurture, value and do our best to preserve our bodies in each incarnation even knowing that we will get another fresh one when our current one is done. Men often take better care of their cars than they do their own bodies. We elves see our bodies as a part of our spirit family, you might say, and we take care of our family, for all our kindred are beloved to us.”

     “And yet, though we do incarnate into fragile human bodies, there is an immortality to the elven, but that is really the case for all beings and is not something that is exclusive to we who are elven as some seem to suppose. It is just that some folks, like Men, have not realized the essential nature of their own immortal being. All of life is eternal. Our bodies are immortal, actually, or really the energy that we have used to formulate these bodies is, although the forms themselves are temporary and changing even as we inhabit them. But once the form dissolves the energy that composed it simply goes elsewhere. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it merely transforms. The key is in learning and achieving the ability to guide that transformation as best we may. Life after life, we develop our abilities, including our ability to successfully inhabit a material body and do so in a way that it will endure, heal and revitalize itself for as long as possible. Trees can live for thousands of years, why can’t we? And the answer is, of course, that we can, but we are still learning how to do so.”

     “Our spirits are immortal, even though they are not exactly the same thing as the transitory personalities that we use to express ours’elves any more than we are actually our thoughts, emotions or opinions. Our ideas, feelings and points of view may change, hopefully will, as we grow more experienced and potentially wise, but our essential nature, the core of our inner being, remains forever the same, although hopefully deepening, in a sense, as our experience, power and potential wisdom increase. We are always ours’elves even when we are not aware of who precisely that may happen to be.”

     “We may go through a period of finding ours’elves, as the expression goes, when we are very young, but finding ones’elf really is a quest for lifetimes and what most people mean by finding oneself is finding one’s place in the world, finding where one fits in or how one wishes to fit into society as it already exists. We may settle on some rather simple notions of our being as we develop into maturity, often falling back into the example that our parents set for us but we are always more than we may seem to be in any particular lifetime and continually evolving toward the greater realization of our beings, whether it seems that way or not. We may go down a lot of dead-ends in our search for enlightenment but those are an education, too. We may wander and meander but when we finally arrive in Elfin we will see that we got there just when we were meant to do so, and the journey, however inconsistent it may have seemed at times, was our path and no other’s.”

     “And certainly, the higher spirits, the Shining Ones who live upon higher dimensions, or more expansive dimensions, you might say, so that they are able to live in our world and yet beyond it, are immortal as compared to our limited incarnations, but even they are in the process of change and transformation, ever in the process of becoming. And while death may be different for them, chosen perhaps, rather than thrust upon them, they still are subject to change. Only it is something they embrace and use, like driving a car we might say, rather than to experience fearfully as most of us tend to fear death as though we are sitting in the backseat as our drunk and half blind grandfather races down the highway. We are, after all, energy formulated by a deep magical consciousness and attaining that consciousness in a more persistent and constant fashion is to obtain immortality. Continuity of consciousness from life to life or body to body or incarnation to incarnation, however you may wish to express it, is immortality in the sense that most of us deem it to be and strive toward achieving. . . . .”

Chapter 4: Lucid Dreaming, Astral travel, the Body of Light

     “Some folks might question the existence of this deeper consciousness, thinking only the conscious mind exists, just as they question the reality of the Between, but this deeper inner consciousness is also the consciousness that guides people around when they are sleepwalking. They are not in their normal waking consciousness and yet they find their way around quite instinctively. It is this inner consciousness that guides us in the Between most of the time, a sort of sleepwalking that gets us to where we need to go.”

     “So, if that is the case, what is the value of developing lucid dreaming, practicing astral travel and formulating the energetic body of light? If they are essentially unnecessary, why bother to develop these abilities at all? The fact is that we are in this life to learn to master the material world and create enduring bodies that will not die, at least not so quickly at first, and which later will become immortal. Part of the process of doing this is infusing ours’elves and our lives and our worlds and thus our bodies with that very light that we use to create our imaginal bodies, our illuminated bodies. We are becoming enlightened. We are becoming bright. Not just mentally, as this notion is usually taken to mean, not just in our minds, our thoughts, opinions and points of view, but also in our bodies so that we, like the pictures of saints with halos, radiate light all around us affecting the world for the better through our mere presence. We are becoming radiant beings and in doing so mastering the material world.”

     “Part of the process of creating immortal bodies is also the transformation of those bodies into forms that are more and more composed of light, which is to say made of matter in its illuminated essence, and thus, in more than one way, less dense, closer to the source of the energy which composes these bodily forms and thus more enduring. We expand thereby into the fourth dimension, that is we learn to consciously live in four dimensions and not just in three as we currently do Most of us usually live in three dimensions utterly unaware of the potential of our fourth dimensional reality or of our possible and we might say eventual or even destined existence there.”

     “Elfin and Faerie are frequently seen as being parallel worlds that live alongside of what most people call the “real” world but as worlds that exist but are more ephemeral in nature. This is what we are speaking of. Entering Faerie or Elfin isn’t about stepping through a portal into another realm almost exactly like this one but which is elsewhere in space as you might travel from Japan to China and back, although death is that portal in a certain sense. But the goal is to become able to live permanently in that world by making ours’elves and our lives more light-filled, thus vibrating upon the same frequency as the Faerie and Elfin realms. And it is this harmony of vibration that allows us to enter or live within those realms. In vibrating on the same frequency as Elfin, we become attuned to Elfin, which in effect means that we enter Elfin and can live there.”

     “Entering Elfin or Faerie by becoming more illuminated is our quest and becoming more illuminated is also the means for succeeding in that objective. Becoming more elfin is increasing the power and vibrancy of one’s aura, the radiated inner light of our being, which is also to say our aura and our powers of enchantment. And it is by becoming more elfin, more filled with the light of Elfin enchantment, that we create Elfin around us. It is a paradox of Faerie magic that Elfin exists and yet our own existence there depends upon us creating it, or making it real in our own lives..”

“. . . .  See your body as light, formed as you desire, and move in that body. This is just like Olympian athletes who imagine themselves doing their particular sport to increase their skill and performance. Going through the motions in our minds increases our ability to do it in physical space, only in this case, the Between is a very subtle form of physicality. It is form composed of very fine substance. . . . . . . “

And everything now seems overwhelming and you are washed away with the tide of the life energy going swiftly you know not where faster than you can think or imagine. Do not resist this flow. There is no need to do so and no purpose in doing so.”

     “However, if you have hated anyone in your previous life, any person or group of people, those individuals will now appear before you, mighty in their visage, threatening in their being and their rage against you, and you will tend to forget that you are an immortal being once more and fear for your survival.”

     “If you flee from them you will reenter the material world seeking incarnation as quickly as possible in whatever portal opens and you will likely be born in the grimlen world among those who live their lives with hate in their hearts and you will be trapped for another life attempting to free yours’elf or be carried away by senseless and unthinking animosity your entire existence there, living in a hell world, often without realizing you are doing so. But this is not at all necessary and you can relinquish your enmity at any moment and fly free.”

     “And heed well, oh, immortal one, these beings that threaten you now are but part of your own being. You need not fear or hate them, for in doing so you are only fearing your own powers and hating part of yours’elf, baring yours’elf from further realization, limiting your enchantments and trapping yours’elf without realizing you are doing so.”

     “Relax. Touch your heart, as I now touch mine, and extend your hand to them in peace, as I extend mine to you, and go on farther into the Between. Be not born again yet, there are better worlds ahead of you and greater powers still to realize.”

     “Now say this chant with me:”

“I do not hate

I do not fear

I embrace mys’elf

And all who are near

We are one in our hearts

And that is quite clear

     “Greetings, noble Shining One, …., you have entered the Lavender Lotus World, and are awash in pleasure. Unlike the second world where nothing you consumed satisfied you, here even the tiniest bit of any food or drink or touch fills you with ecstasy and you need nothing more than a dab of anything. The realms are Glorious and all is awash in magic.”

     “You are new here, and naturally filled with the joy of having ventured into the Higher Realms of Faerie and need do little more at first than relax, enjoy yours’elf and get your bearings. Here is the true Rapture and you are aware that you can now create your body to be or seem utterly as you desire. Create your own form. Change it again, like someone trying on clothes from their closet or in a shop. You may appear exactly as you wish.”

     “And in time, which is different now, so in your own time, you realize you can now fly or levitate, if that is your will. You have the power to inspire others in the world with your thought forms. Especially those who are connected to you of old will be inspired by you, or those who call out to you for aid and it may be that they look upon you as a sort of god, but it would be unwise to fall for this illusion. You are more advanced than they, surely, but still evolving. Be like a loving parent unto them or a kindly and caring elder sibling”.

     “Here you may develop the power of great healing. Shed your healing light upon those of us still struggling and inspire us to live our lives in enlightened and wondrous ways spreading healing in our own lives and by our actions.”

     “Stay in this realm as long as you desire, mighty elfae one, or return to the world if you will to serve or would learn even more or go on further for there is still much to understand and worlds even greater to explore.”

“The Philosophy of Elfin Folke”

“. . . when left to ourselves (faeries, pixies, elves, and our kin), we most prefer to celebrate Spirit by Dancing the night away and chanting the names of the Stars.”

During this time of “Staying Home” due to the Coronavirus bunker down period, we are typing out to share with you some of our old The Silver Elves articles from the 80s that we published in Circle Network News back when it was a very popular go-to Wiccan-Pagan publication (newsprint copies published prior to Winter of 1986 are now archived and unavailable to the public). After we Silver Elves migrated to the Utmost West, we don’t have the entire collection of all our published articles now archived from Circle. We do have a number of the later ones after 1986, but you can still buy these as available back issues from Circle Network News and Circle Magazine here, so we will leave those to you to discover.

One of our articles prior to the Winter issue of 1986 is, “The Philosophy of Elfin Folke,” and it is about our elven perspective of faith and religion. And while it outlines The Elven Way, it is a little prior to our creation and use of the term The Elven Way (for our more recent description of The Elven Way also see our book The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones), although you can see that we are already beginning to talk about the way of elves as “our way.” Hope you enjoy reading it!

     We Elfin Folke are by our natures eclectic. We seek to understand and learn from all experiences and all folk, and all we learn we translate into our elfin world view. The pathways through Faerie are both various and ever evolving; however, there is not nor will there ever be an elfin religion! We are a spiritual people though not in the sense that many often mean it, but “spirited” like a wild mare or a deer.

     The Faery faith is exactly what it means: the Magic and power of Faith in Faerie; a trust that the good, the true, and the beauty of Nature will prevail in time over wickedness, deception, and “image”; a faith that intelligence will rise above ignorance and fairness over prejudice. We never proselytize for our ways are our own; those who join us in them sincerely and freely are truly of us, but for many others, it is surely not the way.

     We believe in the Divine [Magic] and have experienced it in many ways in our lives. Each of the elfin folk has their own individual and shared totems, archetypes, and deities to whom we relate. However, for these elves in particular, we feel that the Deities neither solicit worship nor desire to be worshiped. From our communications with “higher intelligence,” we have come rather to understand that they desire mutual respect. So, what most folks would call their altar, we Silver Elves call a magic table, or sometimes, a stellarphone. We might conceive of our s’elves as being children of the Deities, or we could say that evolutionarily we are the parents and ancestors of the ever more-divine and intelligent beings to come. Being elfin it is easy for us to hold both these views simultaneously, yet we are no more attached to them than good scientists are attached to their hypotheses.

     Since they did not need nor demand our praise (though we often give it), we do not seek praise from others but rather treat all persons with the dignity they deserve just as our elfin Deities [the Shining Ones] treat us. It is because of this that we elfin have no formal hierarchies. Yet, Nature’s hierarchies are ever fluid. Intelligences, like plants, will grow if they are not stifled.

     We understand Divinity in terms of its revelations (revel-elations) that is: truth, happiness, and ecstasy. Divinity is not a being but a potentiality that exists within all beings. Our elfin Deities [the Shining Ones] are beings of higher intelligence yet we relate to them with the same respect we give to all beings, even beings of lesser intelligence – just as the Deities treat us who are of lesser intelligence than they. We seek to emulate their example. We celebrate Divinity [the Magical Divine]. We are ecstatic about the fact that there are Spirits of greater intelligence with whom we can share and learn, for we know this is the key to the future. As the Deities guide, protect, and aid us, so we strive to help others.

     The types of Deities the elfin folk relate to are multitudinous. We commune with trees and tree, and many of us have animal totems. (The Tolkien mythos is rich with such Divine characters.) Yet of all the Deities, the ancient Pan and Mab have touched us most deeply. Still in the name of the Spirit, we have shared communion with all manner of folk. We have attended churches, synagogues, mosques, meetings, meditations, satsongs, rap groups, study groups, therapy groups, and encounter groups to help in the healing of the world. But when left to ourselves (faeries, pixies, elves, and our kin), we most prefer to celebrate Spirit by Dancing the night away and chanting the names of the Stars.

Awakening
“While we’ve often written that faery tales, both ancient and modern, view the faery folk as being ruled by monarchs, this idea is more a reflection of the lives of men and of the world that was and is than a true indication of the Realms of Elfin. This is not to say that there doesn’t exist a Hierarchy in Faery, but that it is important to understand that this Hierarchy is a natural one based on real development and merit and not in the least arbitrary or artificially constructed. All hierarchies, organizations and bureaucracies in the world are a pale attempt to recreate, or in many cases bypass or supersede, this natural hierarchy.”

“The hierarchy of Elfin is a spiritual hierarchy—the hierarchy of illuminated being, of s’elf development of magical maturity—and thus it is the power, of awakened consciousness and expanded and enlightened awareness. Besides the attempts of many to construct this hierarchy in the world, it is also reflected in Nature, where there are hierarchies of intelligence, of knowledge, of personality, beauty, strength, and so forth. While artificial hierarchies tend to be rather strictly structured and unyielding, these natural hierarchies, reflective of the true spiritual hierarchy, are varied and yielding. For instance, while there are general tendencies, we don’t all agree about who is most beautiful or most attractive. It is rather like the question, what is your favorite color? It depends on the individual. So, too, the natural hierarchies are, like the true inner hierarchy, dependent greatly on the individual and their own position in the Universe, their individual tendencies.”

“There is another way that the spiritual hierarchy tends to differ from all artificial hierarchies and even from the hierarchy of Nature. Artificial hierarchies tend to be pyramid schemes with one or a few people on the top and increasing numbers of individuals in various levels below with the greatest number on the bottom. This formula does not tend to change. The one at the top may change. Sometimes, but rarely one’s position on the hierarchy may change, but the structure tends to stay the same. In fact, that is its purpose to reinforce itself and maintain this structure.”

“On the other hand, while the spiritual hierarchy may have more on the bottom than the top at any particular point, the goal and purpose of this hierarchy is to get everyone at the top, to have everyone progress further and further into the realms of Elfin, the realms of radiant enlightenment.”

“We might think of it as a game. In the game of the material world the first ones to reach home win; everyone else is considered a loser. In the spiritual game, we gain points when each one reaches home and our ultimate goal is to get everyone home. Then and only then have we truly won the game.”

“We call it the Elven Way but we could call it the Faerie Way, the Fair Way, the Way of the Fae, the Way of the Shining Ones, or even the Way that begins in your Dreams and ends in the Life Magical.”
