Are tales of elfae based upon the displaced Picts, Britons and Celtic tribes? And what is the association of we elves with whirlwinds?

     BlessingsGreen_Website

“. . . .we elfae are ethereal beings in the sense that we are energetic beings or spirits but that we also have and had a material manifestation, as most ancient tales about us proclaim. We were and are real people with a genuine culture (diverse though it is) rather in our way like the ancient Celtic tribal peoples, whom we Silver Elves, at least, and surely others of our kind, embrace as our ancient elven kindred along with many other tribal peoples of ancient days. . . . “

There was a suggestion posited in Barbara Rieti’s scholarly accumulation of faerie tales in Strange Terrain that stories about us elfae are actually based upon people’s encounters with we elfin folk back when we were displaced from our homes and forests at those times that we were incarnated as Picts (pict-sidhe/pixie), Britons and other Celtic tribal peoples. And those folks may have been physically smaller than the mannish invaders and thus arises the idea of us being little or wee folk. Or perhaps, in fact, we were overcome by them because they had some bit of technological superiority (such as steel/iron) or merely overwhelmed us with their vast numbers as happened to the First Nations People of the Americas. For while we believe in birth control, the normal folk don’t really seem to do so. Since they tend to be dominator cultures that lose many of their people in war, they ever seek to breed like crazy and keep their numbers up. It is all more cannon fodder to their minds.

This, by the way, is an attempt to take we elfae folk and therefore fairy tales away from being considered as mere fiction or ‘tall tales’ into the realms of actuality which lends validity to our culture to the minds of some folk. This notion posits the idea that we are and were real people, whose tribes have been mostly forgotten having been in many cases subsumed by other cultures that came to dominate us. However, it would mean we elfae had a real and genuine presence in the ancient world and still do today even though our culture goes predominately unrecognized and often ridiculed in the modern world.

Certainly, the fact that this would tend to give validity to our culture would be appealing to those modern elfae who often seek to prove the genuineness of their elfae being by declaring a bloodline lineage to the Scythians or other elfae tribes of old. For our own part, we Silver Elves see ours’elves as elven spirits that can be born into any particular bloodline we choose that will prove effective for our quest in any chosen incarnation. However, we don’t deny the idea that there were real elvish fae peoples, upon which the myths, legends and tales are based, that are our spiritual if not always genetic ancestors.

And while fiction and tall tales obviously do exist in the world, many stories of ancient peoples are passed on from generation to generation about real encounters with those peoples that get exaggerated and hyperbolized and even mythologized over time. This can be seen somewhat in the fact that many of the various people relating true accounts of we elfae folk and encounters with us are merely reporting the same tale over again only slightly altered. They frequently report it as a true tale although they didn’t themselves experience the encounter but heard of it from someone else who told them it was true. The fact that their tale is in essence and often in detail nearly identical to other tales that were presumable experienced by others is merely to say that sometimes the same sort of thing happens more than once and that oral history, which is what these faerie tales are, is often passed on in a long tradition that gets altered slightly with the teller’s memory and sometimes fancy.

Certainly some, perhaps many, tales about we elfae folk are made up. But it is our opinion that many of them, even those that have been made up out of ‘whole cloth’ as the saying goes, have been created from elven silk and velvet, lace and the gossamer weaves of Faerie. This is to say that they didn’t come entirely out of nowhere. Although, if someone wishes to believe that these tales come from pure air, we would remind them that we elfae folk, especially the faeries, are seen as being airy creatures. This point of view accords well with that of those who think that we elfae folk are mere ethereal beings.

For our own part, we’d say that we elfae are ethereal beings in the sense that we are energetic beings or spirits but that we also have and had a material manifestation, as most ancient tales about us proclaim. We were and are real people with a genuine culture (diverse though it is) rather in our way like the ancient Celtic tribal peoples, whom we Silver Elves, at least, and surely others of our kind, embrace as our ancient elven kindred along with many other tribal peoples of ancient days.

So, are tales about us based on authentic stories passed down about Picts, Britons, Gauls, Celts, Scythians, Bretons, Daione Sidhe, Tuatha de Danann and others? Yes, they are. For we elfae are, we have been and by the grace of the Divine Magic, we will continue to be very real.

What is the association of we elfae with whirlwinds?

Some of the individuals that Barbara Rieti interviewed for her accumulation of fairy folklore tales in Strange Terrain suggested that there was a connection between we elfae folk and whirlwinds, which when we were children our parents referred to as ‘dust devils’. The idea that we elfae are linked to whirlwinds would give us an association with the djinn of Middle Eastern lore, who are also supernatural beings and thus, to our minds at least, linked to the Faerie worlds. Although, if you wanted to have Faerie as a subcategory of a greater category of Supernatural, just as we consider Elfin as a subdivision of Faerie, we quite understand.

We for our part view djinn as being a sort of faerie folk of the Middle Eastern cultures and we might note two things in reference to this. The first is that djinn are often viewed as being demonic beings in the same fashion that Christianity declared for long ages that we elfae folk were really demons. Although, we should point out that Islam holds that the djinn can find redemption through Allah, just as any other soul can and thus the djinn are not necessarily evil in the Islamic religious philosophy.

The other thing we may consider is that the famous Fairy Flag of the Clan MacLeod bears with it the legend that it was given to members of that Clan when they were Crusaders in the Middle East. It seems quite possible that the faerie folk that gifted that magical flag to the MacLeods were, in fact, djinn (see our book Jesus Christ Elf Lord in reference to both these connections).

Djinn are often seen as manifesting through dust storms or pillars of fire, burning bushes, etc. And like we elfae folk, they are frequently seen as being somewhat ethereal in nature. The fact that individuals in Newfoundland (where the stories in Strange Terrain were experienced, passed on and collected) who conveyed what they considered true tales of encounters with faeries also saw we elfae folk as being associated with whirlwinds links us even closer to the djinn. Of course, in those tales, this usually involved apotropaic acts such as avoiding whirlwinds for the very reason that we elfae are associated with them. Just as we Silver Elves were advised by our families to avoid walking under ladders for that would bring us ill luck or not opening umbrellas in the house for that would create a leak in the roof.

However, we don’t know why we elfae would be linked to whirlwinds, other than the fact that there is something just basically supernatural seeming about them. Whirlwinds reminds us of magic and magic always reminds us of we elfae folk and it could be that the same is true of the normal folk as well, or at least the fairy seers among them. We could just as well say that we are linked with storms and thunder and lightning, however, those things are usually regarded as the provenance of the gods. Still, sometimes people seeing us dance have commented that we elfae were ‘dancing up a storm’.

We Silver Elves do have a habit of putting forth a blessing when we see a ‘dust devil’ so it will help us distribute our magic. The little whirlwind being a sort of a postal worker of the more ethereal realms. Take this blessing and deliver it to whomever you think most needs it or most deserves it or just fling it off as you go and we’ll see who encounters it.

Of course, it is always possible that whirlwinds are caused by our dancing. Elderly people use to say in an endearing way to us as children when we were dancing and twirling about the home, “You’re just like a whirlwind.” And after all, we elfae are often said to dancing in circles, commonly seen as going around faster and faster as the dance goes on. Could that not possibly be the cause of a whirlwind? After all, they say that mushrooms spring up in the circle where we have danced, thus the idea of ‘faerie circles.’ So, why wouldn’t our dancing cause whirlwinds? We rather like that idea. The fact that it has no scientific basis doesn’t daunt us at all. We are used to things that cannot be explain scientifically. It is not that we have anything against science. We are rather fond of it really. But there are things that simply don’t lend thems’elves easily to scientific confirmation. And, let’s face it, we elfae folk are among those things.

Besides, while considering our dancing as being the cause of whirlwinds may not be a scientific truth, it is a poetic truth. And in Elfin and Faerie poetic truths carry great weight. We don’t disregard scientific facts, but there are things that are not entirely within science’s purview and art and love and magic and certainly things Faerie are among them.

Many Kindred have asked us what is “The Elven Way.” Although we have written books on it (see our book The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones), here below is our short definition:

Short definition ofThe Elven Way” by The Silver Elves

“The Elven Way is the spiritual path of the Elves. It is not a religion. While all elves are free to pursue whatever spiritual path they desire, or not as the case may be, The Silver Elves are magicians and follow no particular religious dogma. We do however believe in all the Gods and Goddesses, (also Santa Claus [to whom we’re related], the tooth fairy [distant cousins] and the Easter or Ostara Bunny [no relation]) and try to treat them all with due respect. The Elven Way promotes the principles of Fairness, that is to say both Justice, Elegance and Equal Opportunity and Courtesy that is respectful in its interactions and attitude toward all beings, great or small. We understand the world as a magical or miraculous phenomena, and that all beings, by pursuing their own true path, will become whomever they truly desire to be. Our path is that of Love and Magic and we share our way with all sincerely interested individuals.”

“To remind us ever of the need to rise up and lift our others with us, to have compassion for others even those who oppose us, to endeavor to understand the true natures and motivations not only of ours’elves but all others, the Shining Ones send us Sages who appear in many forms, in nearly all cultures and speak though various social and religious philosophies encouraging us to strive toward the light, to seek ever the good of all, and to further spiritual evolution in all that we do. We elves call this the Way of the Fair or The Elven Way. The Path is never-ending, the Way is ever before us, the Choice is always now, and we are eternally evolving. This is the Elven Way. The enculturation and other protections that shield the normal folk from the realization of other dimensions are lifted when the elf steps upon the path and begins to tread the Elven Way. The Elven Way gives our lives meaning and purpose. We come to understand who we truly are, that is that we are spirits evolving and we establish a purpose in our lives, which generally might be expressed as aiding ours’elves and all others to fulfill ours’elves perfectly. That is to say, we become who are truly are, which is who we truly desire to be. Remember, we ever wish to be our own true s’elves as perfectly as possible, which means among other things to be happy and successful forever, to live Happily Ever After.”

“The Elven Way passes beyond the fields of the known
into the forest of the unknown
illuminated by the glow of the elves.”
