Someone asked us Silver Elves this question in one of our Facebook groups. In many ways, the answer depends on what they mean by ‘need’. Do we need to do magic? Well, yes and no. If they mean do you have to do magic to be elfae, well, no. As our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters pointed out years ago in their Elf Magic Mail (see our books by that title, volumes 1 & also volume 2), we elves are magic by our very natures. We are primarily enchanters, as we Silver Elves have pointed out numerous times (see our book The Keys to Elfin Enchantment: Mastery of the Faerie Light Through the Portals of Manifestation) and it is our personalities or ‘aura’ as we Elf Queen’s Daughters said, that are our primary magic expressed as we live our lives moving through the world.
As it happens, Tolkien would very much agree with this. One may note that when the Hobbits talked to the elves about magic in The Lord of the Rings, the elves were a bit puzzled. And Galadriel in showing Frodo and Sam her mirror comments that perhaps this is what they meant by magic. Tolkien was very opposed to magic in the form as it is often carried out by those who seek to control the world. He thought it too manipulative and an effort to force things instead of allowing them to develop naturally (see Tolkien’s essay On Fairy-Stories). His attitude seemed to be essentially that it was what we might refer to as grunting and groaning magic. Elvish magic, to his mind, was enchantment. It flowed and harmonized with Nature and wasn’t an attempt to force one’s will upon the world or the Universe but rather, in its way, an effort to correct the dark magics of those who do attempt to do so.
To our minds, at least, enchantment is magic. A more natural magic in most cases, but a magic nonetheless. It doesn’t force. It charms. The name enchantment itself comes from the word ‘chant’, which is related to the word for ‘song’ and it denotes willing adherence to one’s will. People support us because they love us and our enchantments/songs. We bring magic into their lives, as they do in ours, and we are mutually supportive. We obtain our will naturally without attempting to force anything. Our lifestyle is our song, so to speak.
On the other hand, if one asks, do we elves need to do magic and one is asking do we have a natural love of magic and all things magical, well, yes, we do. At least, we Silver Elves do and we expect many other elves do as well. We are interested in all sorts of traditions of magic. We study them all and experiment with quite a number of them. However, that isn’t necessarily true of all elfae folk. It may be a peculiarity of our natures, although we expect that there are quite a few other elfae who share this interest with us but even if most of us were so interested, even if it was 99.9%, it wouldn’t necessarily mean that all of us shared that interest. We don’t wish to fall into the trap of thinking that because we like something or are this or that way that all elfae must be that way as well. Except when it comes to being eccentric. We elfae are all pretty eccentric individuals.
So, if one is asking are elves by nature or culture obligated to do magic? Then, no, we are not. What we are inclined to do as a people overall is follow our natural interests and inclinations. The fact that many of us are intrigued by magic, especially elfae magic, is only to say that we are indeed elves. Do you need to share our interests? Not at all. In fact, if you are not following your own natural interests, then you have gone astray from The Elven Way (see our book of that title).
So, no, we don’t need to do magic. It flows rather naturally from our being and because it does so, it is genuine and powerful and radiates out into the Universe and affects people just as every real, down to earth and genuine person does. People are naturally impressed and influenced by those who are ‘real’, which is to say, just being their own s’elves without effort or artifice. That, surely, is the greatest magic, which is to say enchantment.
So, in the end, it comes down to this. Do what’s natural to you. If you are interested in magic, study it and do it. If not, don’t. However, if you are avoiding doing magic because of someone else’s judgments about magic, when inwardly you are really curious and interested and drawn to it or, if you are doing it because you think you are supposed to do it, when you are not really interested, then you have strayed from the path. And what is the path? It is the path of s’elf development, which is to say the natural illumination of your elfae being, whomever you may be. So be the elfae that you truly are.
When is the Best Time to Do Magic?
There is the idea that success in life and opportunities coming into one’s life often depend upon being in the right place at the right time, which is a hard idea to refute. With that is the notion that there are certain periods when one can do one’s magic that will optimize the results of one’s spells. Often, this has to do with the type of magic one is doing, which is to say what spirit, deity or being with which one may be interacting and what planetary influence they tend to come under or are linked to according to the nature of their being.
However, this is also seen as being the case for the type of spell one is casting, whether there is a particular spirit involved or not. Remember, according to Frazer in his introduction to The Golden Bough, that the earliest magic wielders, sorcerers, shamans, etc. did not evoke gods at all to carry out their magic but applied their magic directly. This was pre-religious magic and, in his mind, proto-scientific magic. This was direct magic. And this would be the difference, in its way, between going to a mechanic to fix your vehicle and repairing it or doing maintenance on it yours’elf. If you can, surely you would wish to do it yours’elf, because then you will be certain it is done correctly. If you wish a job done right …
However, even direct spells come under an astrological influence. Love spells, for instance, often come under the influence of Venus and prosperity spells usually are associated with Jupiter and so forth. Every sort of spell would have its planetary association. Interestingly, many war spells and agricultural spells would both come under Mars. Beat your swords into ploughshares and spears into pruning hooks (see our books Jesus Christ Elf Lord, volume. 1 and also see volume 2).
You can find this idea in The Picatrix, which has reference to spirits, spells and their astrological links and therefore the best times to do a particular spell. Al G. Manning’s book Helping Yourself with White Witchcraft has a chart that shows the days of the week and the planet that has the greatest influence at any particular time of that day. While Franz Bardon’s book The Practice of Magical Evocation has specific spirits assigned to the various degrees of the zodiac as well as to planetary influences.
We elves, however, or at least we Silver Elves, tend to be a bit more ad hoc, ad lib, impromptu and spontaneous in our magic. We cast spells when they are needed, when we feel we should do them and when we feel the time is right. And while we have, upon occasion, consulted various charts as to the best time to formulate and cast a spell, mostly we just don’t do that. We trust our feelings and our instincts and have faith that when we feel called to do a spell that the time is, indeed, the right time to do it. In that way, we are more mystical and intuitive magicians than those who wish their magic to seem more scientific in its workings. Not that we have anything against that, mind you.
But then, we Silver Elves, as most elfae folk, are primarily enchanters. And while we do cast spells now and again, here and there and often on the fly, and have our own elven spirits that we sometimes evoke (see our book The Elfin Book of Spirits: Evoking the Beneficent Powers of Faerie), most of our magic stems from the wonder of our beings — which is also to say the joy we take and express in being our own true s’elves. As our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters wrote, “Aura is the Elves” (see our books Elf Magic Mail, book 1 & 2). For us, asking what is the best time to do magic is rather like asking what’s the best time to eat. Well, when we feel hungry really, when we need the nutrition and the energy boost we get from eating. We listen to our bodies and in terms of magic, we listen to the voice of Nature around us and the call of Elfin and Faerie.
We do magic when we feel a need to do magic. But then, being elfin folk, we are also magic by our very natures and ‘magic happens’ just by us going about our lives. Although, this also depends somewhat on our developing ours’elves as elfae individuals and in so doing increasing the power and potency of our beings. Thus, in that sense, we are always doing magic because we are ever emanating the light of our elvish beings into the world without even trying most of the time, just as we breathe automatically without having to think about doing so. Our magic is like the automatic nervous system that controls breathing. Although, we also do conscious magic from time to time as well. And yet our conscious magic is such a part of our being in many cases, it is also rather automatic, it becomes a habit of positive being and an expression of our nature. In that way, it influences our DNA and will become even more a part of our being in future incarnations.
So, in that sense, the answer to the question of when should one do magic would be: always. Be magic in all that you do. Be your own true elfae s’elf and that will be magic all in itself. Everything you do and say will be magic and magic will spread out from your being like light shining from the sun and stars. Shine, beloved elfin kin. Shine your magic light into the world. Do it now. Do it always as best you can for the time is surely right to do so. And as far as being in the right place at the right time.
