As it happens, we are writing this on the Eve of May Day/Beltane (and here in Hawaii it is Lei Day or the celebration of Aloha Spirit and the giving of flowers), which is a bit of a coincidence and for us a synchronicity, which is to say a coincidence that has psychological import and meaning to us. About thirty four years ago, after knowing each other for nearly a decade but being for much of that time separated by time, space and circumstance, we, Zardoa and Silver Flame, were able to get together and have been together, quite delightfully ever since. A short time after we were reunited, we attended a Pagan gathering on Beltane that was organized by the Church of All Worlds and our friends Oberon Zell Ravenheart and Morninglory in conjunction with Forever Forests and our friend Anodea Judith.
Originally, we had been invited by Anodea and it had been conceived as a free gathering. Somehow in the intervening months between that original invitation and the actual event it had become a pay to attend gathering but we had not been informed and arrived with our crew, which at that time consisted of about a half dozen elf folk and elf friends, not realizing this was the case and thus not having brought the wherewithal to pay for entry. Fortunately, after Zardoa had a quiet word with Oberon, and due much to the kindness of Oberon’s spirit, we were allowed to attend anyway, with a promise to help as best we could with the event. So, Beltane has always been a significant day for us, a sort of anniversary, you might say, of our union and our coming together on a permanent basis, even though we don’t usually celebrate various pagan holidays unless, of course, we’re around our pagan elven kindred. And then we will celebrate whatever they are celebrating.
And so, does true love exist? Certainly. It can be seen most easily in a parent’s love for their child. Not that all parents love their children, or that all parents even know how to love their children, or love anyone else for that matter for if you can’t love your child it is unlikely you are capable of loving anyone. But if you are looking for true, lasting and abiding love, love where a person will willingly lay down their life for the other, and will otherwise willingly and even eagerly spend their entire life devoted to doing all that they can to help and promote the well-being of that other, then seeing a parent’s love for their child is an easy way to see true love.
Of course, when most people are asking about true love and whether it exists or not, they really mean romantic love. That question is not whether families can love each other, often despite everything, but can two strangers that come together really and truly love each other? Can you truly love each other if you are not genetically related is the essence of the question, if you started out as strangers? And the answer is, according to the elves, well, yes, it does exist. In fact, such love is actually quite common and easy to observe. There are many people, usually young but not always so who are in love, who fall in love and truly love each other. Surely, a certain amount of infatuation and especially among the younger folk a certain or great amount of lust is involved but none-the-less their love is real.
It is true that there are those who get together that have ulterior motives, who unite with another and fane love because of a desire for advancement in their career, financial situation or have some other motive, but there are many who are just plain in love with each other, who have become enchanted by each other, cast a spell on each other at the same time and truly love each other.
But, there is another aspect to this question, which is that usually when someone speaks of true love and wants to know if it is real, that individual also really is asking, can it last? They are not really inquiring about does true love exist, but can true love endure? And, yes, it can. Or perhaps we should say, yes, we can make it last. And by make, we mean magic. Can we magic it to last?
It is true that love can be fleeting. People who seem deeply in love at one point often wind up seeming to hate each other later. Their love, we are told, has flown away. But the fact that their love didn’t last, doesn’t mean it didn’t exist. True love does exist, but getting it to last does seem to take a bit of effort over time due to numerous factors. The various pressures of the world are usually the most potent among these. Little envious demons hating that you love each other, throwing obstacles in the way of things are one factor, but another is just the fact that life on the material plane can be difficult at times. We’re wading through matter here. It’s thick and slow and makes everything more difficult. We’re not living on the Moon — unless we’re in love — we’re on the Earth and gravity can really suck here at times.
Still, to the elves, true love is real even if it doesn’t endure. And yet, it can endure, it can last. It may transform, certainly, just as we ours’Elves change in time. It may and, hopefully, will mature. The nature of the passionate bond may mature as well. For if true love exists, and lasts then it will also age, as we do or along with us. It gains a certain patina with age, however, making it even more beautiful.
So, beloved elfin kin, love truly for as long as your love lasts, as long as you are together, or apart, love truly, which is to say s’elflessly, seeking ever the best for the other, and you will find that loving truly is the key to true love.

The information on The Ten Stages, or Colors of Elven Ritual Magic below is taken from the The Book of Elven Magick: Vols 1 and 2, by The Silver Elves. We would like to thank Ileådryn, Sara Isayama, for her beautiful graphic design.
We Silver Elves created this Color Magic system as something fluid and individual. You start with what Color Magic you feel you are drawn to. If you don’t have a preference and are a person who likes things set in order, then start with One. If you are a person who likes to go more by your feelings, then choose first the one you are attracted to and feel you meed in your life. It is said that if you like to look at this in terms of order, one might think of the color sequence above as being akin to something like Maslow’s Heirarchy of Needs, only applied to magic and ritual. For instance, it’s hard to do Healing Green Magic, if one is under psychic attack and therefore one must first defend oneself and place barriers and be in a secure, safe place b
efore one can do any healing. That is why, for example, Black Magic or Protection Magic is placed before Healing Green Magic. Also, “Health” is a perhaps the greatest wealth, which is why Healing Magic comes before Orange Magic for wealth generation, and so forth.
But remember that we often are working on more than one color magic at a time in our lives just as we have more than one need at a time that needs fulfilling. So while you certainly may go in an order 1 to 10, what you need is truly your decision and you may need to do more than one at a time. We don’t actually have charts or graphs in our books, most likely because the Elven Way is so fluid.
