“. . . we Silver Elves and most magic wielders that we know, certainly of the elfae sort, while we are principally Enchanters (male and female) also study and utilized all sorts of magic in our practices. We are witches, yes, but also wizards, warlocks, enchanters, sorcerers and many other magical things. And there is nothing higher or lesser about any of them except as they are illuminated, or distorted, by our individual intention and our ability and proficiency in wielding them. We are only lesser or greater as wizards and warlocks, and witches for that matter, as we make ours’elves so by our on practice of magic.”
In his book Helping Yourself with White Witchcraft, Al G. Manning, D. D., writes that the word or title, if you will, of Witch applies to both males and females and should be distinguished from ‘lesser’ terms that are used for male magic wielders such a Wizard or Warlock. However, he doesn’t in any way explain why he considers Wizard or Warlock to be ‘lesser’ terms. In what way are they lesser?
It is possible, although we are only theorizing here, that he means that witch, being applied to both males and females is superior to wizard or warlock that, to his mind at least, applies only to males. However, we Silver Elves have no problem with the idea that wizard would apply to both males and females and the same is the case with warlock. This surely is the situation with the word Actor, which used to mean male performers, while Actress designated female thespians, but currently Actor is utilized to indicate both males and females of the acting profession and there is no reason, as far as we Silver Elves can see, that the same can’t be extended to wizard or warlock. We could say wizard or wizardress, which we sometimes do, but wizard would do as well for it is the magic that is important not the individual’s gender.
However, Manning published his book in 1972, so we are somewhat reluctant to accept that his motivation in saying wizard and warlock were ‘lesser’ terms was based upon creating a more gender neutral society, although, as we said, that is surely possible.
Rather, it seems to us that for some reason, unexplained, he deemed being a witch as somehow a higher status and aspiration than being a wizard or a warlock. We can understand that for warlock, in as much as warlock seems etymologically to be derived from the Old English word ƿǣrloga, a word that meant ‘breaker of oaths’ or ‘deceiver’. Thus, warlock was associated both with those who betrayed their coven with demonic forces so that they were perceived as being deceivers by nature and inclination.
In more modern times, warlock is often defined as a practitioner of witchcraft or sorcery. However, we should remember that both these terms have been and, in some instances, continue to be associated with wicked magic. And in modern films, warlock are most often working on the wicked, or domineering, side of magic, determined to get what they want, which in itself is usually dark, no matter whom they hurt on the way. Surely, it is that very reason that led Manning in the first place to title his book as one of White Witchcraft.
And sorcerers, at least as they are presented in fantasy stories, are commonly seen as dark or wicked magicians, also. Fortunately, at least among the occult and magical communities, the word sorcerer, in modern times, has been somewhat uplifted by Carlos Castaneda’s Don Juan series of books.
For our own part, we Silver Elves see elven warlocks as individuals whose magic is used to create peace, to moderate differences or conflicts between groups or individuals and who therefore put a Lock on War. They ever seek to keep conflict or war from breaking out and do so by projecting magic that creates a more understanding and tranquil atmosphere in the world. When individuals, as we commonly see, organize an event where everyone is supposed to join in and pray or mediate or, in this case, do magic for World Peace on a particular day, they are exercising the power of the Elvish Warlock.
As far as wizards go, this is more problematic. Wizards, while generally seen as male, it is true, can be either good or ill intentioned in their magic but for the most part are accorded to do good and not only good but good for the community or a people as a whole. Of course, they also have the additional notion of being wise ones and being geniuses or very clever, as in the common usage of the word wizard to indicate someone who is a ‘wizard’ at cards or driving a car or playing the piano or whatever.
There is no reason, to our elvish minds, to designate Wizards or Warlocks or Sorcerers, for that matter, or any other type of magic wielder as being inferior to witches or any other type of magician. There is no type of magic that can’t be wielded by male and female practitioners. And all sorts and types of magic, alas, can be abused and misused. And, additionally we Silver Elves and most magic wielders that we know, certainly of the elfae sort, while we are principally Enchanters (male and female) also study and utilized all sorts of magic in our practices. We are witches, yes, but also wizards, warlocks, enchanters, sorcerers and many other magical things.
