What is the Difference Between Elves and Witches?

Rocks_MagicTableColorBlog
“….while elves can be witches, not all elves are witches
and surely not all witches are elves.”

We Silver Elves and our sisters of the Elf Queen’s Daughters of old always felt very close to witches and in fact the Elf Queen’s Daughters declared on a number of occasions that they were elven witches and this was surely true. They felt a close association with the witchcraft movement of that time (mid 1970s) and were very close with Oberon Zell Ravenheart and Morning Glory of the Church of All Worlds. They were also friends with Alison Harlow of the Covenant of the Goddess, Zee Budapest of the Dianic Movement and other prominent witches of that period. In fact, all of the above were featured on various of the letters of the Elf Magic Mail, which the EQD sent out each week, three letters (the amount you could send for one postage stamp) for over a year.

We Silver Elves also knew all of the above individuals, although we only ever meet Zee Budapest in passing. On the other hand we had spent times in several of the homes of Oberon and Morning Glory and Alison Harlow and in fact our friend Valerie Voight wrote a wonderful letter of recommendation for us to join the Covenant of the Goddess but as it turned out we didn’t pursue that, our path leading us elsewhere.

But while elves generally feel a kinship with witches, we also feel a link to nearly all magical practitioners. There are elven wizards, conjurors, mages, curanderos (magical healers), sorcerers, shamans, diviners and magicians. But, of course, we are particularly enchanters (see our book The Keys to Elven Enchantment: Mastery of the Faerie Light Through the Portals of manifestation) for enchantment is the main and primary magic of the elven and always has been both in lore and tradition and in reality.

In later years (we’ve know them for over forty years), the founders of the Elf Queen’s Daughters and the inner sisterhood tended toward Sorcery in their magic interest and practice but we Silver Elves still pursue enchantment as our primary magic. But the choice of what magic to do, as with nearly everything else concerning elves, is up to the individual elf and hir own spirit and soul. If the elf lets hir natural attractions guide hir, she is bound to find in time the magic that is perfect for hir.

So while elves can be witches, not all elves are witches and surely not all witches are elves. We did meet a woman one time who came to us for guidance and lessons on the magical path, who claimed that she was of witchbreed, that is to say born to be a witch. But even if that is so, and we don’t doubt her, it is still a matter of choice. She pursued witchcraft because she loved and was attracted to it and choose to do so. Of course, one could argue that she was born to love witchcraft, that it is in her blood but still the choice of acting upon it is hers. Without that choice, without that decision to act, there is no true magic. If we are compelled to do magic and have no choice in the matter then we are not magicians but puppets to someone else’s magic. Choose wisely, beloved.

And For Some Practical Elven Magic. . . .

And we are happy to announce the publication of our newest book on Elven Magic!
Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic: Using Art-Making for Evoking Elfin Magic and Living the Elven Way by The Silver Elves is a book of magic — very practical magic that involves the creation of one’s magical tools, which include wands, staffs, rattles, crowns, hoods, robes and many other instruments of magic and, in this case inHedgewitcheryBook particular, of elven magic and enchantment. In this book, we share with you many of our favorite magical elven art projects that we have enjoyed doing in the last 40+ years and give you guidance and detailed instructions for creating your own and using them in your magic, along with over 100 photos to demonstrate the art processes. Also, this is a book of elven spells and enchantment magic, with elven rhyming magical spells (200 spells in total written in both English and the magical language of the Silver Elves — Arvyndase, including Arvyndase pronunciation keys) that you may use in rituals to empower your art and magic with each magical item and creative project. We include our magical art processes from faerie altered clothing and making faerie houses to creating magical elf stones and ritual tools such as a Book of Shadows (or a Book of Twilight as we elves call them) and also a Scrapbook of Shadows, chalices, ally dolls, wands, canes, staffs, seaweed pod rattles, magic plates, elven warrior shields, wishing wheels, mojo bags, and elven witches brooms and magic spoons. We further have chapters in Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic on making elfin dream pillows, fairy dust and pixie powder, elven magical boxes or reliquaries, elven Mbuti, paintings, illuminated circles, magic soul cards, tarot decks, pan pipes, fantasy maps and even some of our favorite elven group-art games like elven notan and Elven Chess. We also have a chapter on spell crafting using the seven-pointed elven star. And in our final chapter, we share with you more about the Orb of Healing, which is a magical artifact that is at the center of our elven magick.
You may read a bit more about this book and a few examples of spells from it here.

Lyndarys
The Elves of Lyndarys: A Magical Tale of Modern Faerie Folk

THE ELVES OF LYNDARYS by The Silver Elves is an often humorous novel about a young man’s struggle to mature and develop himself, his magic and his identity as he encounters and explores the modern pagan and otherkin communities and happens to encounter real elves, slowly coming to realize as he does so that he may not be a man at all but one of the elven. He is confronted through his journey not only by his own incredulity about his encounters and his inner conflict with what he has been taught to believe is reality and his actual experience but also by his personal prejudices and false assumptions. He comes to discover not only that the magic of Faerie is real but further that the Elven Way, as presented by his mentors, offers him a means of traveling the misty paths to magical and mystical enlightenment.
You may read more about this elven fantasy novel here, including some reviews and an excerpt. As one 5 star reviewer said:
“I will be recommending this book to my faerie/elven friends. We are always looking for stories that resonate with our own brand of reality and this book does that extremely well. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in a modern day story of finding Elfland and all the magic and freedom that a place like this can have. Fans of The Lord of the Rings may also like this as it treats Tolkien’s Middle Earth as a real place and mentions its characters often.”

In Elfin Stay . . . . . .

In a darkened twilight world
The voice of spirit ancient hears
A laugh, a whisper, and a jest
That calls you to the final test.
Come within, it seems to say
Do not fear we’re here to play
And if you wish
We’ll show the way
And you at last
Can come and stay.

I studied with Gavin Frost in the sixties. I could not make a commitment to wicca, although in October, my inner witch always stirs. I am a reiki master and a shamanic practitioner, and teach both. The Elven Way seems to answer the pull to magic in a more appropriate way for me.

Elves are truly a varied and unique people, dear sister, and we are certainly blessed to have you among us! Yes, Elven Enchantment is a different approach than those who practice “power over” magick. We elves are about healing magic, evoking helpful spirits in a respectful and friendly way (no orders given here from the elves) and s’elf development rather than compelling others to our wishes and demands. Thank you for stopping by our blog world as we always love seeing you here and reading what you have to say. That inner witch is certainly stirring this October in us too and we are defining just what sort of witch we are expressing through burning our candles brightly to give out Elven Blessings!
