Do We Elves and Other Elfae Folk Tend to Travel and Migrate a Lot?

gypsyvarn

The photo above was taken when Silver Flame was in her early 40s (so about 32 years ago) and we Silver Elves lived in Northern California. One day a gnome came through town driving his donkeys and caravan. We were so excited to see someone we could totally relate to in lifestyle that we went to meet him and take him a gift. He stayed around a few days and then seemed to suddenly disappear and never came back through our town. His caravan seemed so slow moving with the donkeys that we never quite figured out how he managed to vanish so quickly. Magick!

In her book The Lore Of Old Elfland, Linda Raedisch states that we elf folk have a tendency to travel a lot and migrate frequently. So, we Silver Elves ask ours’elves, as we do with nearly everything anyone states about we elfae folk, is that true?

Historically, or at least according to much of the lore, this is indeed the case. The Fir Bolgs, the Tuatha De Danann, the Nemedians, and later the Celts Gaels, also known as the Milesians or Sons of Mil, and even the even more shadowy and mythical peoples that the Christian monks named the Cessair and the people of Partholón all migrated to Ireland from elsewhere as noted in the Book of Invasions or Lebor Gabála Érenn. Both Laurence Gardner in his book the Realm of the Ring Lords and Nicolas De Vere in The Dragon Legacy confirm this with as much historical data as they could muster as they also link those peoples to the Scythians, (upon whom many of the ancient legends of elves or Sidhe are said to be based) to the ancient Hebrews and to the Egyptians. The link between the ancient Irish, especially the Gaels and the Egyptians, seems also to have been confirmed by recent archeological findings.

The reason for these migrations, however, is another matter and may very well have to do with the various invasions by the pastural peoples with their dominating and power-over cultures spreading into the more agricultural areas of the world (see Sacred Pleasure by Riane Eisler for more on this) as well as destroying the forest and pushing out our woodland dwelling ancestors. It is quite possible that the reason for these migrations had to do with those people fleeing from invasion and oppression by others, only to run into conflict with those who were already in the areas they wished to inhabit. Which would mean that traveling and migration are not necessarily inherent to our elfae natures but a result of the circumstances our ancestors were confronting in their world.

But here we are presented with the question is travel or migration part of our elfae nature and not just a result of oppressive conditions in the world?

We do know from faerie lore that there are what are called Trooping Faeries, who seem to spend their lives traveling from place to place, rather as is imagined to be the case with the Romany folk. Although, while the Romany have been known to travel about, not all of them are migratory. And, of course, there is a branch of these people who call themselves Travelers, but who often have a base or community that they travel to and from as they go out into the world to ply their particular trades. And while there may be trooping faeries that doesn’t mean that all faeries travel around.

And there is the fact that in Ireland there is lore about avoiding building one’s home or some other structure upon a faerie road, thus obstructing it, and the bad luck that comes to one for violating this prohibition. Blocking a faerie road is the energic equivalent of going out to your local road and building a house or parking your van or bus in the middle of it so that no one could pass. You would be towed away quickly and probably be fined or arrested but the idea is essentially the same. However, just because there are roads doesn’t mean that these spirits don’t have homes, communities or mounds that they dwell within. Nearly all of us, to some extent, have to travel about if only to go to work or the neighborhood stores or to visit our friends and often all three.

There is also the famous Faerie Rade where we elfae travel about the country to see what is out there, but that is really a periodic thing and more on the lines of a road trip than a continual peregrination, although it sometimes seems to have the overtones of a parade, showing who we are to the world.

However, in examining such things, we Silver Elves don’t just consider the ancient lore to understand our elvish natures and cultures but also always take a look at our own s’elves and our kindred and how we behave in the world.

In our own lives, one of us Silver Elves has moved nearly thirty-five times in their life and the other over seventy-five times. Also, we have lived in vans and buses and traveled to and fro across the continent and back. So, for us, while we are currently stationary, except for an occasion trip to some other country and region of the world, we can say that the idea that elves are travelers has some support in our lives. However, we think it is a bit much to presume or extrapolate from our personal experience and inclinations and project them upon all elfae folk. It is wise to consider that there may be other elfae folk out there who seldom move or travel and have spent nearly their entirely lives in one area. We know from our own experience of our kindred that this is so. It really depends upon the individual elfae and sometimes has to do as well upon a particular period in their lives, for some of us travel a lot at one time and become quite sedentary in other decades.

So, like many things that are said of the elven, we can only say that it is somewhat true, or partially true. That it is true for some of us and not others, as is often the case. We are a unique people by our nature and eccentric by disposition (that you can safely say of nearly all of us). But in just saying that, it becomes clear that there are few things that apply to all of us and that is something we truly have in common.

. . . . We invite you to read about our newest published book. . .  THE FAERIE SONG ORACLE: The Elven Way of Singing Down Magic of the Fae is so named because it is an original elfin oracle system based upon the solfège or solfeggio system, also called solfa, solfeo, which is used as a music education method in the West to teach aural skills, pitch and the sight-reading of the music scale. That scale is Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol or So, La and Te, with another Do representing a higher octave, at the end. We have presented these notes in this oracle according to the way they would be spelled in Arvyndase, which is the Silver Elves magical elfin language. And, therefore, these musical sounds/notes would be spelled: DO, RAE, ME, FA, SOL, LA, and TE, which as you can see only differs in one instance. The pronunciation, however, is the same. The Faerie Song Oracle book is meant to be used as an oracle, but it is also a book of magic. Thus, the sounds can be sung together to create a particular magic that either heightens the power of a boon or dispels unwanted influences. The Silver Elves associate these notes with each of the points of the seven-pointed acute angled Elven Star that many people call the Faerie Star. For each oracle reading, you will be drawing two notes. So you might consider that in drawing the faerie song oracle you are dealing with the power of two of the points of the elven star combined (each point signified by a different note) or one of the points in its pure form (if both of the notes that you draw are the same, as say when you get Rae-Rae as a response). The second Rae can be sung on a higher octave evoking a raising or increase of that power.

    :O

I can tell you that this sidhe likes to stay put! I have only moved five times in my life, and two of those were to go back to the place where I was born (and still am). I prefer to hold a space where I can provide hospitality to the traveling types, rather than to travel myself. (I like traveling in the sense of touring, but with having a place to come back to – not the kind of traveling where you have no consistent dwelling.)
