The Fomorians were a ‘supernatural race’ of peoples in the tales and mythology of the Irish peoples. However, while the Lebor Gabála Érenn, which literally means “The Book of the Taking of Ireland” and is generally known in English by the title The Book of Invasions, speaks of six invading peoples, the Fomorians are not listed among them. Rather, the Fomorians seem to be already in Ireland/Eire when the first invaders arrive. Are they, in fact, the first race, the Elder Race?
Interesting to us, also, is the fact that the Fomorians come into conflict with every successive group of invaders, except for the Fir Bolgs, with whom they seem to share a close clan affinity. So, it is possible that the Fir Bolgs are a clan of the Fomorians or a closely related tribe. However, we should also note that the Fomorians are not only seen as Chthonic beings who, like dwarves, often make their homes beneath the earth, but are also seen as sea raiders, coming to and from from Ireland.
Now, we don’t claim to be experts on Irish lore or mythology, merely very eager students of nearly every lore, myth and magic that we encounter in the world, especially when it concerns the elfae peoples. At the same time, we ever seek to view the information we receive with fresh eyes and our own elvish understanding of our lives, our peoples and, in as much as possible, our history. Although, since much of our elvish history is really pre-history, that can take a good deal of theoretic and intuitive deduction. Also, we base much of what we think upon our own experience of our elven lives and our observation of our otherkin, while understanding that, in fact, we elfae as a people have surely changed and evolved over time. Which brings us to the fact that our notions and understanding of elvish lore has also evolved over time and continues to do so, as we Silver Elves seek to incorporate all new information into our overall view of ancient and modern elvish culture and being.
Now, the Fomorians are often viewed as being giants or monsters. Due to this, they are also sometimes seen as being mythologically related to the Jötnar or Jotunns of Norse mythology and the Titans of Greco-Roman mythology, who each proceeded the later gods, or supernatural beings, and are also seen as being monstrous giants.
Plus, we should remember that the Fomorians are said to be led by Balor, who has one eye (a cyclops? or one eye like Odin?) and are sea raiders, like the Vikings. Are the Fomorians really a Viking people? After all, we should remember that later in recorded history it was the Vikings who founded Dublin as a trading outpost in Ireland.
Now, Claude Lecouteux in his scholarly work The Hidden History of Elves and Dwarfs: Avatars of Invisible Realms relates the Fomorians not only to giants and monsters but also to Dwarfs (or dwarves, as we prefer, although Dwarfs is the officially accepted form). Which brings us to the legends of the Menehune (pronounced: may – nay – who – knee) of the Hawaiian islands where we Silver Elves currently abide.
The Menehunes are generally regarded to be a supernatural race of beings, much like dwarves in size, who came out at night and constructed ponds, heiaus (outdoor temples), stone fences and other things.
The Hawaiian islands are said, in some circles, to be what is left of the lost continent of Mu or Lemuria, which are seen as being different by some folks but the same by other. While some scholars are of the opinion that the Menehunes were adapted from Western lore by the native Hawaiians, others are of the opinion that the Menehunes were the peoples (like the Fomorians) who were already living in Hawaii when the Polynesian (Hawaiian) peoples came. Others are of the opinion (and this comes from a local Hawaiian guide that we spoke to in our own neighborhood on the island of Oahu) that the Menehunes were composed of a great deal of babies who had deformities who were left out to die, as was the practice among the Spartans and others throughout history, in some cases just because they were female, but instead were adopted by the outcast people of the mountains. Thus, they were not monsters at all, but only monstrosities as normal people would view them, and certainly not monsters as we elfae would see them. However, we need to keep in mind that nearly all conquerors project those they conquered as being monstrous beings who are often seen as being sub-human. The Nazis are a very recent example of this, but they are surely not the only ones to do this. Such conquered peoples are not usually viewed as being dwarves, for saying you conquered a race of dwarves is like saying you and your gang beat up a bunch of kindergarteners. That would hardly make one seem heroic and noble, which is the object of history written by the victors.
It seems to us Silver Elves that not only were some of the Fomorians ‘little folk’ but were, also, the first peoples, the Elder race of Eire. They may have been viewed as monstrosities by outsiders, but we have come to doubt that they were actually monsters. And we are certain that, in fact, they were of the elfae peoples whose diversity is much vaster than being merely the most fair and beautiful people on the Earth. After all, to we elfin, beauty comes from within. And beauty is born more of spirit than of physicality, for we are, indeed, a race of spirit, which is to say supernatural beings.
