Is there a Difference Between Fey and Fae? What is the Difference Between Elfin and Eldar?

Zardoaquote31

Fey and Fae . . . .

In a recent Netflix series entitled Cursed, they used the term Fey for the Elfae folk, instead of Fae. Is there a difference in those terms? Traditionally, fey is a word that has been used to indicate giving an impression of otherworldliness, sometimes in a vague or mysterious fashion. But then everything otherworldly is mysterious by definition. In that sense Fae and Fey would be quite the same really. Although, there is generally nothing vague about the otherworldliness of the Fae accept our answers to intrusive questions from outsiders. Although, it might be pointed out that while people often sense our otherworldly natures, they are not always sure what it is that they are sensing, merely that we are strange and different and sometimes make them feel vaguely uneasy.

The word fey has also been used to indicate a person who has supernatural or psychic powers of clairvoyance or sight or is a faerie seer, perhaps. In that definition, fey would then include not only the fae but those who are touched by the fae, those who are connected to our world and able to see us when others cannot do so or at least choose to ignore the obvious reality of our existence and pretend otherwise.

Now the Scottish have a definition of fey which indicates someone who is fated to die or coming close to the point of death, which is interesting because there is the idea in some literature concerning the Doom of the Elves, which is sometimes associated not with death directly but rather the opposite. Our doom is the fact that we are doomed to live forever. Which doesn’t make a lot of sense until you realize what a crazy world this is that we currently share with Mankind and so fated to die makes it so many fae could escape this world for another, kinder and certainly more reasonable world. One where both science and magic are valued instead of being scorned.

At the same time, there is often a release that occurs for those who know they are fated to die soon. They often give up all the pretensions and attachments to the illusionary things of the material world and begin to find some connection and association with the world beyond. And that also can be freeing in a sense, for in encountering a certain end they no longer fear the threat of an unknown death.

For our own part, we Silver Elves have always related the word fey to a type of fae that courts death, rather in the same fearless way the Viking Beserkers did (also see the Merriam-Webster dictionary for this meaning of fae), or in modern times the way in which many individuals involved in Xtreme sports often risk their lives in pursuit of the thrill of adventure. Like those individuals who climb cliff sides using only their hands and feet and no safety equipment or like tightrope walkers who risk death by not using a net. They are, in our estimation, fey individuals.

It might be noted that the word fey comes from the Old English fǣge which does mean fated to die soon and is related to German feige that means cowardly. Now, this is rather the opposite of our meaning, where knowing one will die for certain makes one wilder and courageous rather than timid. Here in the Old English meaning, impending death is thought to make one cowardly or that being cowardly tends to actually hasten one’s death.

But this may be due to the fact that we elfae are basically gentle folk, who are disinclined toward conflict, and especially disinterested in endangering our lives for the sake of creating wealth for the warmongers who profit from war. They might call us cowardly for our reluctance, but we merely see this as basic natural intelligence. What, in the past, would have been called Common Sense.

We might point out that in the aforementioned series Cursed that the fey did not have pointed ears. Some of them had horns on their heads, some of them had tusks, some had snake-like skin, and some of them had nothing at all to indicate that they were fae except for a connection to the Divine Magic that expresses itself through Nature. Thus, in that sense witches and magic wielders in general would be fey.

We could, using that characterization of fey, make a distinction between fae, who have pointed ears and fey who are also otherworldly beings who do not. And by that definition, most of us elfae born into this world at this time would be fey rather than fae. But, we prefer instead simply to embrace our kindred of whatever kind, as long as they are friendly or elf friends, and leave both fey and fae as being essentially the same. Vagueness sometimes suits the elven and the rest of our kindred. It is our shield and protection and manifest from the Mists of Faerie (see our book Through the Mists of Faerie).

Elfin and Eldar . . . .

We use the word Elfin, capitalized to indicate the realm of Elfin that would be similar in its way to the word Faerie, when it is capitalized as both a place and a state of consciousness. Or perhaps a place that is a state of consciousness, or a state of consciousness that creates a particular ambience of space.

Most people traditionally have called our realm Elfland. But to us, Elfland tends to define a specific location, like England or Scotland or Japan, while Elfin indicates a transcendent realm of etheric eldritch energy that tends to manifest around elven folk, in much the same way an aura surrounds a person’s body. The aura moves with the person and Elfin moves with the elves who are radiating that elfin energy. It is mobile in the way that a particular place in the world isn’t. Although, land does change.

Which brings us to the word elfin, un-capitalized, which to we Silver Elves denotes everything and everyone that reminds us of our elven natures and magic. We’ve read various writers who have described one of their characters as being elfin, or having elfin eyes, or ears or whatever and in doing so they don’t necessarily mean that the character is an elf but that the character should remind one of elves and things elven. We are using elfin, and really the word elvish, in much the same way.

In the Dune series by Frank Herbert, there were a society of assassin’s who always gave their intended victim at least one chance, one way out and if they found it they were free to go unharmed. He described these assassin’s as elfin in appearance but he didn’t necessarily mean they were elves, and yet, we expect that they were. Who else but elves would give someone a chance to escape?

So, it is that brownies may be called elfin, or pixies or many other elfin kinds, without necessarily meaning that they are elves. The same is true of the word fae, really, which might be applied to faeries but could also be used to describe many elves, pixies and elfin types. The word elfin generally refers to those with the qualities of elves and is likely to be found in Elfin, and fae denotes, to these elves, those beings likely to be found in Faerie. We know that there are some who might disagree with our definitions, but we aren’t trying to set down hard and fast rules about how these words have to be used, only to express to our kindred how we are using them so you might better understand what we mean.

Eldar, however, is a bit different. It is related to the word Elder, meaning older, and is often used to describe the elven people as the first peoples, the first spiritual race to manifest upon the world. We are the aboriginal folk from all over the world. Eldar specifically means the elves and the elfin and perhaps the fae, as the oldest of peoples upon the Earth. Elfin refers to the place where the Eldar manifest.

We, as manifest or manifesting elves, are the descendants of the Eldar, the ancient elven peoples, the aboriginal folk of olde and the civilizations that myth and legend say came before. Thus, we are the folk of Mu, Lemuria and Atlantis and way before that. And yet, at the same time, if you realize the true nature of reality and the fact of reincarnation, you will understand that we are also the ancient Eldar reborn into these modern times. We were our own ancestors, in part, and are our own descendants. We are the Eldar folk born again and again and again, manifesting through time, which is really space and sequential development, in other words, magic unfolding. We are ever becoming and we are elfin, and elvish and elven and fae all at the same time.

This perhaps explains why we elven, elfin and elvish and fae folk are often described as seeming very old and ancient and yet young and youthful at the same time. Because, we are ancient and old, Eldar, Elder folk and yet renewing ours’elves continually through the lifetimes. Manifesting in our elfin ways and in doing so manifesting Elfin all around us.

“Elves consider the all of Nature to be our backyard and the World to be our front yard, on the sides you’ll find everything in between.”

Many people ask us which Silver Elves books to begin reading first and so we say, which ever sounds right to you, follow your elven intuition, as there is really no right order in which to read them (you may view all 50+ of these on our author Amazon page here for the USA and here for UK)! But if you would like a suggestion, you may wish to begin with one or more of these books listed below:1. Through The Mists Of Faerie: A Magical Guide to the Wisdom Teachings of the Ancient Elven This is our most popular book and one we highly recommend reading by anyone interested in elves and the elven way.
2. The Elven Way: The Magical Path of the Shining Ones This is a companion book to Through the Mists of Faerie, but may be read in any order. It is also a very popular book and a good one to start with.
3. The Book of Elven Runes: A Passage Into Faerie
4. The Book of Elven Magick, The Philosophy and Enchantments of the Seelie Elves, volume 1, explores the Elven viewpoint concerning magick and the world, and traditional spiritual and religious myths. It covers all the color magicks, the tools of magic, and gives magical ceremonies that may be adapted for use by modern elves, magicians, and faerie folk. The Book of Elven Magick, The Philosophy and Enchantments ofthe Seelie Elves, Volume 2, continues the progression of the color magicks and proceeds on into the nature and establishment of the Elven Vortex/Coven, using mudras and tattoos in magic, using mantras in magic, our theories on calling the directions/dimensions, magical words of power, and much more. It is the completion of and companion to volume 1.

“We elves see ours’elves as actors in a play conceived by the Divine Magic in which extemporaneous improvisation is greatly encouraged.”
—The Silver Elves

We also suggest that if you have questions about the Elven Way and being an elf, then you may also wish to read The Magical Realms of Elfin: Answers to Questions About Being an Elf and Following the Elven Path. If you are curious about elves and want to learn more about modern elves, then you will surely find The Magical Realms of Elfin to contain many of your questions answered and it will be a great comfort and help in finding your way home to the magical realms of Elfin.

“Elves are both ancient and modern at the same time. Our culture is ancient but still thriving in modern times, which makes us seem both very old and very young at the same time.”
