“. . . indeed many if not most elves use sigils of various sorts and perhaps even more are inclined to use hyper-sigils. . . our elvish hyper-sigil, our art as an outpouring of our magic, our life-style as an expression of our elvishness, is certainly an important part of our lives as elfae beings. And while it doesn’t really make us more elfin, it is a more elf-like expression of our being in the world . . .”
First, of course, the answer to this question, like so many others, depends upon the elf. But, in general, we would say that indeed many if not most elves use sigils of various sorts and perhaps even more are inclined to use hyper-sigils. But before we go further, let’s attempt to define what we are talking about here without in any way limiting the expression of or our understanding of these two terms, sigil and hyper-sigil, nor limit you in your own understanding and definitions thereof.
A sigil, as you surely know, is a symbol, sign or signature of a being, energy or spirit. The ankh is a sigil of eternal life of Ancient Egypt. The cross, with and without poor Jesus nailed to it is used as a sigil of Christianity. The swastika is an ancient sigil of Hindus and Buddhists (although misused by the Nazis) representing a spiral galaxy.
Our book An Elfin Book of Spirits is filled with spirit signatures, which are sigils. And Voudoun Veves are surely sigils as well. In fact, you could say that tags, which are seen here and there painted on walls of cities and towns around the world, except where tyrants rule, are sigils as well. We could also say that Runes are sigils (see our book The Book of Elven Runes), or can be used that way, and Druid Oghams (see our most recent book An Elfin Book of Trees for the Elven Druid: The Ogham of the Elves Using Elvish Wizard Script) and surely the seven-pointed acute angled Elven Star is a sigil as well (see our book The Elven Star Oracle). Looking around the room we are currently sitting in, we see numerous sigils upon our walls in every direction, including sigils from ancient Taoist Calligraphy Magic.
Hypersigils or Supersigils, which we admit are new terms to us, none-the-less are something that has been part of our magic for years and involves the use of magic, art (see our book Elven Hedgewitchery and Found Magic), drama and the persona as an expression of magic. In other words, one makes one’s magic real by living it and incorporating it into one’s art and one’s lifestyle. And we’d say that almost all elven folk do this even more than they use traditional sigils.
Even those who are not entirely sure they are really elven, fae or otherkin, often do this without realizing they are doing so when they LARP or RPG or otherwise live out their elven life in their imaginations. We Silver Elves, and others like us, have simply extended this practice into our regular lives and live the life Elven in reality.
Still, pretending one is an elf or fae is really, in this sense, evoking a hyper-sigil, whose effect may very well prove to be an eventual awakening for that individual, especially when they encounter other elfae who are manifesting their elven natures in reality. Carl Jung created the idea of Synchronicity, which was a term that defined coincidences that had psychological significance and impact for the individual. So that the individual experiencing a synchronicity not only sees that a coincidence has occurred but also feels that there is meaning behind the connection of these two or more similar, and to them related, events. This assigning of meaning is, in part, what we are doing as elves and as magicians and magic wielders in general. We are organizing the Universe in such a way that it has meaning and purpose for us and we are doing it in such in way as to manifest Elfin and express ours’elves as elves at the same time. The meaning we see in things may not be seen, recognized or acknowledged by others, but then others often don’t recognize that we are elven either.
This isn’t much different, in its way, from being able to read a language that others may not. Our elven lives are hyper-sigils but they are in an elven script that few others can read. At the same time, you could say that all the books we Silver Elves have currently in publication about elven life, culture, magic and philosophy are also hyper-sigils and yet while anyone who reads English can understand what the words say, it doesn’t mean that they will understand the inner, magical meaning of those books. It is not just about understanding the words, but understanding the enchantments that live within the words.
However, the original question didn’t actually ask if we used sigils and hyper-sigils but whether we used them to become more elf-like and here we’d have to say both yes and no. We are elves. In a sense, there is nothing that can make us more of what we are, because we are what we are and that is elven, or fae or other. But on the other hand, by expressing ours’elves and our elven nature through and into the world, we are becoming more elf-like in the sense of better able to express ours’elves more purely in the world and shed the various trappings and enculturation that have been forced upon us by the mundane worldly in their eagerness to make us like them.
So, in that sense, our elvish hyper-sigil, our art as an outpouring of our magic, our life-style as an expression of our elvishness, is certainly an important part of our lives as elfae beings. And while it doesn’t really make us more elfin, it is a more elf-like expression of our being in the world and that certainly is rather the same thing while being a bit different. Just like we elves ours’elves.
