What Do Elves Think of Psychiatry, Psychology and Modern Therapists?

“Oddly, the inner self is not generally viewed as real in this mundane world, similar to and perhaps even more profoundly than how the world of mankind has denied the existence of elves. The importance of developing the self and even its existence at all, is absent in most modern forms of psychological therapies. And it is certain that until mankind views their own inner Nature or self as real and important to nurture, they will not only feel disharmony and psychological discomforts but also will continue to deny the existence of elves who experience both inner s’elf and outer Nature as one. We elves understand that people can be healed of psychological discomforts by viewing the inner self as real. And then once the self is fully nourished and developed, the person will feel balanced and instinctually make healthy decisions.”

First, let us say, we are psychologists, if you mean this word in its literal sense, as those who study the psyché. Shamanism, and really sorcery, are forms of and ancestors to modern psychology. In fact, magic and the magical arts are the sources of nearly every study in the world including medicine, botany, theatre, religion and much else (see Frazer The Golden Bough). In fact, these elves have Masters degrees in Psychology, so when we say we are students of psychology and of the psyché, we are being quite literal about that. The mind and the feelings, which are greatly connected to the unconscious, are fascinating to us.

There is an idea in popular magical lore that if you know a person’s true name you will have power over them. What this really means from an elven point of view, is that if you truly understood a person, understood them from their own point of view, then you would have the power to influence them (see I Ching #61 Inner Truth) and thus affect their thoughts and behavior. This is also the common idea of psyching someone out. Although, for the elves, such influence is used generally to move individuals toward greater inner and outer harmony.

Professional psychologists and psychiatrists are a different matter. Unfortunately, these days, where nearly everything including one’s attitude and point of view are seen as a result of the biochemistry of the brain and body, psychiatrists (we were told by an elf brother who is one and works for a major hospital chain) have become mostly script writers for pharmaceuticals. Sort of diagnostic pharmacists. Of course, this is the Kali Yuga, and thus it is only natural at this juncture in the evolutionary development of humanity that the world is viewed as being a primarily material event.

Even those therapists who can’t (because they don’t have a doctorate in medicine) or don’t prescribe drugs, are generally only partially, or even marginally effective. Years ago, there was a research study that had two groups, a test group of people in therapy and a control group of people who didn’t go to therapy. They were studied over a period of time and it was discovered at the end of this period that of those who were in therapy about a third got better, a third got worse and a third stayed the same. Interestingly, in the control group of those who didn’t go to therapy, the results were exactly the same, a third got better, a third worse, and a third stayed the same. One might think that the researchers would conclude, as many people do in modern society, that psychology and therapy is essentially useless. But instead they concluded that therapy was only as good as the therapist. Which probably could also be said of auto-mechanics, doctors, dentists and even actors and directors.

The great minds of psychology and psychiatry, such as Freud, Jung, Maslow, Rogers, etc. were very effective as therapists, because they put their heart and their souls (as well as their minds) into their relationships with their patients. However, many therapists today are simply following a formula that they’ve been taught for every patient and this is barely effective. And the fact is (and these elves know it from personal interaction, for we know a number of psychologists), they can be just as screwed up in their personal life as those they seek to treat. But then, you don’t expect your dentist to do his own root canals, so that is not totally unreasonable, although there is some expectation that psychologists should be somewhat saner than most folks. So, while these elves respect modern psychology and psychologists, we don’t think that it is generally a very effective method at this point for helping people. But then, in its modern manifestation as a science, psychology is a very young discipline and needs time to evolve.

But the main thing that we question about many modern forms of therapy, is the hierarchical aspect of the therapist-patient relationship. In our experience, it is a personal and caring relationship that is most potent in enabling people to change. And most often, it is in our personal lives of love and romance that most encourages people to strive to really improve thems’elves. Carl Rogers, in the 1940s and 50s, was certainly on the right track with his Person-Centered Therapy that was an empathic and non-authoritative approach, empowering and motivating people in the therapeutic process. And of course we are not saying that all forms of modern psychological therapies are without this important aspect of the caring relationship, but those that mostly concentrate on dispensing pharmaceuticals and offer little else, certainly lack this important ingredient of care that is so necessary for any real change in the person’s condition.

Dr. Timothy Leary, a great modern psychologist, was of the opinion (shared by ancient shamans) that people were neurologically templated to believe and behave in certain ways and simply unable to make any real change unless the synaptic links in their brain were released and re-wired, so to speak, using a variety of shamanic techniques and technologies. This aligns itself with the same biochemical theories mentioned earlier, only the pharmaceutics prescribed would be different and there are other life changing and sometimes life-threatening events that can also produce the same effect. Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD) is essentially a result of such rewiring of the brain.

But there are other techniques, such as one might use on a Vision Quest, like drumming, dancing, chanting and so forth that can also produce this effect of rewiring the brain in a more positive fashion. Often this is what is happening when one encounters a highly spiritual person and experiences an epiphany or revelation. Frequently, when one awakens to their elfin, faerie or otherkin s’elf, it is due to just such an experience. It is a profound spiritual revelation.

Thus, these elves don’t do traditional therapy with people, although Silver Flame has held a license to do so and Zardoa could practice as a psychologist in some states. What we do is relate to our kindred as best we are able and on occasion we offer the Somatic Reflection Process to help unite body and mind (see book What’s Behind Your Belly Button? by Love and Sterling).

We elves see the inner self as real and attempt to assist our kindred to nourish their own inner being and instinctive needs with both caring and acceptance balanced by freedom of expression. Oddly, the inner self is not generally viewed as real in this mundane world, similar to and perhaps even more profoundly than how the world of mankind has denied the existence of elves.

And then once the self is fully nourished and developed, the person will feel balanced and instinctually make healthy decisions. Our hope is to help, guide and nurture our elfae kin as we best are able to do so, and to be with them as their loving and affectionate kindred in a world that often seems as though it was designed to drive us all crazy.

elvenPsychBookcoverbigELVEN PSYCHOLOGY: Understanding the Elfin Psyche
and the Evolutionary and Esoteric Purpose of Mental Disorders

ELVEN PSYCHOLOGY is written from a unique elven perspective about the present day human condition, which includes an exploration of the psyché of both normal folk and elfae. We elves are elven by spirit, so our entrance into humanity is the addition of a new spiritual race, not a new physical race, and elves have been born in these modern times into all physical races, as well as most cultures and religions throughout the world. In fact, there are many who are following esoteric Ancient Wisdom Traditions, as well as some Tolkienists, who through the process of benevolent evolution, see ‘elf as the new normal’ or majority of humankind in the not so distant future. So, it is important to update many areas of academia that explore, express, and explain human life; psychology being one of these.

Thus this book expands the realms of modern psychology, which has never before included the elves and otherkin population as being real. If one says that they are an elf, most psychologists today will still hold you in suspect of having a delusionary disorder and try to evaluate you further. We explain in Elven Psychology why from a standard psychological point of view that believing you are an elf does not in itself constitute a disorder even in traditional psychology, and then we go much further and explore the disorders and psychological struggles that we observe in our modern society in both normal folk and elves/otherkin, along with the spiritual purposes of disorders and new perspectives for healing.

What Kind of Elf or Otherkin Are You?
And What is Your Elfae or Otherkin Tribe?

For years various kindred have asked us, the Silver Elves, to help them figure this out. You probably know if you are an elf, faerie, or otherkin but now we’ve created a questionnaire in order to help us and you create a narrative about your specific people and your clan, their personal characteristics, magic, relationship to Nature, and interests. This is our gift to you (free), which we think will be a bit of fun for both of us. Give us five minutes of your time and we will give you a half hour to forty minutes of ours. Simply follow this link and the directions on that page:

“Elves don’t make a strong distinction between what is real and what is artificial, for everything is really something even if it is not really what it pretends to be. Rather, we look at the world and distinguish between those things are an organic whole and therefore vibrating life and those things that are composites of other energies. The first tends to radiate energy, the second is inclined to absorb it. The first, a star, the second, a black hole. And yet, when a black whole is full, it bursts again into stardom, and so the Universe goes ’round, like the dance of the fae around the fires of creation.”
