Some people seem to think that elves are a type of faerie or that the faeries are a type of elves, although in our Silver Elves experience of our elfin and faerie kin, elves are generally disinclined to wish to be classified as faeries and faeries are the same way in reverse. It is not that we don’t like each other. Most often we elves are very fond of faeries, and the faeries that we Silver Elves know and have known are quite fond of us as well. It is just that we don’t wish to be confused with each other and are quite attached to our own sense of s’elf and our particular sub-culture of greater Faerie or Elfin culture overall.
From our Silver Elves’ point of view, while elves are not faeries nor are faeries elves, we are both Fae and of the Faerie Realm (remember that the realm of Elfin is within the larger Faerie Realm). In that way, Fae, which we might define as a being of Faerie, Faerie-land, or the Faerie Realm, is a higher and more encompassing category of being, much in the way that the whales are mammals and humans are also mammals but whales are not humans or vice versa. Or we could look it at it like the fact that Asians are Human and Caucasians are Human but Asians are not Caucasians or Caucasians Asian except for the fact that there is mixing of the ‘racial’ types, which we Fae folk also have. And this is perhaps a better analogy because humans can’t breed with whales, although Asians and Caucasians can certainly interbreed and so can we Fae, even though our interbreeding is more of a spiritual rather than genetic type. Our own daughter told us when she was four years old that she was a Faerie Elf. Thus, while elves are not faeries, nor faeries elves, faerie elves or elven faeries are surely both.
And it is a simple fact that we Silver Elves are not only friends with faeries, gnomes and all sorts of Fae kind and have lived together with some of them as well, we are also genetically related to faerie elves, faeries, pixies and descendants of the ancient Sidhe and other sorts of fae kind as well.
To add to the potential confusion, there is the fact that we Silver Elves, at least, and other elfae (another designation for fae) that we know, consider other beings that are not human or not even mammals to be elvish as well. There are elven hounds and elven trees and elven birds and faerie cats and we Silver Elves even view the dragonflies, butterflies and moths as being faerie creatures as well. This idea of elfin dogs and faerie cats can be found in the ancient faerie lore as well.
Among normal humanity, such an idea that their kind might also extend to insects and birds and so forth would be unthinkable. And even though there is good scientific evidence that they are related through a common ancestor to chimpanzees and share 95 to 98% if their DNA, many of them are not all that happy about that idea either. Whereas, we elfae sorts have no problem with the idea that we are related to the Great Apes. In fact, most of us elfae folk would much rather be genetically associated with apes than with most of the normal folk of Mankind who for all their proclamations of being human seem quite animalistic to us. Plus, and this is a bit of an aside, if you follow the elfae and faerie lore that can be found in The Realm of the Ring Lords by Laurence Gardner (as well as other places), we are mythological linked to the Annunaki who are sometimes credited with being the ones who tampered with the genes of the ape people and made them more human so they would serve as workers for us. Sounds a bit Unseelie to us, but then much of mythology is.
Our point is, however, that elves are not faeries (except for faerie elves) and faeries are not elves. We elves are portrayed as having pointed ears and faeries have their wings and we suppose faerie elves might have both. And we elves are generally a bit more serious than faeries often are, although we know that faeries frequently use the common misperception that the normal folk have of them as being flighty or frivolous as a glamour to fool the normals and thus move more easily through the normal world. And this is not to say that all elves are ever serious by nature or that faeries are never intent upon achieving their aims, but there just is a general tendency among us to have slightly different personalities in that regard.
But mostly it is simply a matter of the fact that we elves like being thought of and called elves, because we love being elves so much and faeries love manifesting in their faerie form because they love being faeries and that is a good enough reason as far as we are both concerned to distinguish between us.
