How do we Silver Elves deal with people who think we are roleplaying being elves? We really don’t mind. Generally, we let people think what they want about us. It’s usually easier to let them have their preconceptions, prejudices and unwarranted assumptions than it is to attempt to enlighten them about things that really won’t make much difference in their lives, except for the fact that they would be more enlightened and more aware of the truth of our nature and reality in general. But that can be frightening for them. And we elves really aren’t here to scare people, at least, most of the time, we’re not.
And in fact, elves in particular and perhaps faeries and others also, often do enjoy ‘roleplaying’ as elves or others even though we are elves. It is certainly possible that elves may role play other beings as well. In fact, in our experience most folks that do role play and cosplay and such, usually have at least a bit of fae in their souls.
We have found that orcs, goblins and such, and especially ‘real men,’ tend to look down upon those who do cosplay or roleplay. They take themselves far too seriously for that and scorn others who do not. Which is not to say that there aren’t those who might cosplay orcs or goblins, or that there aren’t any orcs, goblins, grimlins who do cosplay, although grimlins would surely be the least likely to do so. ‘Serious’ doesn’t begin to describe the way these grimlins take themselves. Fanatical barely scratches the surface.
And surely elves might cosplay orcs or goblins. When elves saw the goblins in the Mines of Moria in the Fellowship of the Ring movie, we couldn’t help think what lovely creatures they actually were, if it was not for the fact that they were so hostile and under the sway of Wicked Magic. We thought, as we elves often do, if they were just nice folks we could be quite good friends really. It is only their hostility to us and their ignorant, mindless and persistent destruction of the environment that keeps us from embracing them.
Traditionally, it is said that we elven folk and our fae cousins are indeed rather playful folk and that is surely true in its way. Like most things about the elven, however, it is a provisional truth, a partial truth and contains its opposite as well, because we can be quite serious folk and we are surely seriously intent upon spreading our magic into the world and manifesting Elfin upon the Earth once more for the betterment of all. And not a moment too soon either.
There might be those among us who therefore are dismayed that so many folks ridicule our elfin being, individuals who view us and really think they are quite right in their scorn, without a moment’s thought about how rude and ignorant they are being. The idea that there may actually be elves in the world or that we might really be elves, is something that they simply cannot allow themselves to contemplate. The truth is that they are afraid, as so many folks are, of social ridicule and rejection and while we elves are not fond of those things either, we prefer the freedom to be ours’elves to the limitation of social conformity.
At the same time, we know from long experience that ridicule is just part of the behavioral propensity at this point of the evolutionary stage of many humans. They sometimes kill people for being different than they, for being a gay or transsexual person or a different race, for thinking differently than they do, believing differently, even for looking differently. So, when we find individuals who simply are unable to accept that the identity we have chosen to manifest within in this world is one that they don’t believe even exists, we simply leave ‘sleeping dogs lie,’ as the saying goes. Or as we elves might say, don’t stir rabid dogs.

We elves love cosplay, although we don’t tend to mimic characters so much as create our own. In that way we are rather like Tauriel who wasn’t written about in The Hobbit but implied. Our characters are implied by the nature of Elfin.

As usual, a wonderful article. I now have 3 elven friends, 2 men and 1 woman. We do not play at being elves, but share everything. The books we are reading, the experiences we are having. What we notice most is that there is more joy in our lives. We wear the elven star. I feel that I am truly an elf-witch. I have felt this all my life, and it is a delight to now have others joining me on the path. Thank you for being there,
