What Say the Elves about the question ‘Does one need to suffer to learn compassion?’

June 17, 2018
compassion_blog “. . . as Tolkien pointed out about we elven, the answer is both yes and no and perhaps, maybe, , , . the answer seems to be, so typically elven, that it depends upon the individual and their level of spiritual development.”

It is clear that there are individuals who don’t seem to evidence any understanding or compassion for others until they have suffered as those individuals have, have ‘walked a mile in their shoes,’ so to speak, and experienced what they have experienced and thus, in doing so, gained real insight in the predicaments and situations of others. But the question here is, is it always necessary, as some folks seem to think, to suffer in order to be compassionate?

But before we answer that directly, let us come about it around the long way, as elves are often prone to do, taking the scenic route as we will, and say that suffering does not in itself make one compassionate. It should be quite clear that there are many who have suffered, who are suffering, who feel no compassion for others at all. They may complain about their own suffering, but they don’t extend that unto others in similar situations. Prisons and the experience they provide is surely an example of this. So, certainly, suffering, in and of itself, doesn’t automatically develop compassion in an individual. The Nazis, for instance, who had suffered greatly due to economic sanctions after the First World War, didn’t have compassion for Jewish people even though the Jewish had suffered at the hands of others for over two thousand years. Instead, the suffering the Nazis experienced made them even less compassionate. As the old InBerlinMonumentZardoa_Silversaying goes, misery loves company and those who suffer often only want to have others do so as well, not to have them become compassionate but to make them suffer, too. (Although we must add that in a recent trip to Berlin we witnessed that Germany has evolved far past this lack of compassion and have dedicated monuments in Berlin to their holocaust victims to show some restitution, see photo to the left.)

On the other hand, Siddhārtha Gautama was raised as a Prince and was kept as free as possible from every hardship and any suffering. In fact, those who suffered were actively kept from his sight, and yet when he did encounter the suffering, quite by accident, he felt the impact of the suffering of others (or we might say he suffered seeing the suffering of others because he already had compassion upon birth, perhaps he had suffered in a past life and learned compassion with that suffering) and became curious about Life, about suffering and its causes, and that led him on his quest for enlightenment and in time helped develop the compassion that had already stirred in him to greater depths of understanding and the pronouncement of that realization into principles that could help one overcome and escape from suffering.

So, beloved elfin kindred, the answer is quite clearly that one doesn’t necessarily need to suffer to learn compassion, at least not in the present lifetime they are living. However, at the same time, it seems that there are individuals who simply won’t learn compassion without suffering as others have, and some who have no compassion for anyone but themselves.

Thus, as Tolkien pointed out about we elven, the answer is both yes and no and perhaps, maybe. Some folks can learn compassion without suffering. Leaders of revolutions are often the children of the upper classes who have compassion for the suffering of those less fortunate in their genetic privilege, while other folks when confronted with the most terrible suffering simply hide themselves away from it, doing the exact opposite of the Buddha who sought it out in order to understand it. So the answer seems to be, so typically elven, that it depends upon the individual and their level of spiritual development.

How Often Do Elves Do Magic?

May 19, 2018

ZRubbingBelly
“. . . most of what the majority of folks would call or think of as magic,
the actual doing of rituals or casting of spells and so on,
we do on an impromptu and ad hoc basis. We perform
magic constantly in our daily life and when it needs to be done.”

How often do elves do magic? It depends upon the elves. In many ways, our magic is not done, so much as lived. We are magic, as the Elf Queen’s Daughters wrote years ago in their Elf Magic Mail. We exude magic. Enchantment and mystery radiate from us. And most of what the majority of folks would call or think of as magic, the actual doing of rituals or casting of spells and so on, we do on an impromptu and ad hoc basis. We perform magic constantly in our daily life and when it needs to be done. We send elementals off in this direction or that on this or that assignment.

Unlike most magical groups, we Silver Elves don’t have specific rituals for celebrating the Soltices and Equinoxes and so on. But, that is just us. Tië eldaliéva, the Elven Spiritual Path, as they call thems’elves, have taken Tolkien’s works on elves and created a ritual system pretty much attuned to what pagans are generally doing. We, on the other hand, just see what happens on a particular day and do what we feel is relevant. Of course, we know that there are some elves who hunger for more structure and as we say they can find it here or there, or really there but not here, or create it thems’elves, but they will be disappointed if they are looking to these elves for structure.

Our example is one of improvisation. This is why these elves in our The Book of Elven Magic, volume 1 and also volume 2, created rituals for those who were interested in ceremonies, including magic ceremonies for all the colors of the rainbow, as well as golden and silver magic ceremonies. So you can find within these two books magical ceremonies for purity, protection, healing, prosperity, creativity, opportunity, love, wisdom, harmony, as well as our inner magical secrets and the precepts of illuminated elven magicians. And while we give you these ceremonies and ritual guides, we emphasize that you should take them and make them your own, adapting them as wanted or needed. Unless, of course, you are very organizationally minded, which we are not, and then you could organize something and if we were around and the time seemed right to us we’d be glad to assist and attend with bells on our toes and smiles on our faces. We are not against people having organized magical rituals, we just aren’t inclined to organize it, and we certainly don’t intend to plan it, but if it happens that’s fine with us and we are always happy to add to it with our magical energy and Elven Blessings.

That doesn’t mean that we don’t have any magical rituals. We have been doing the I Ching everyday for the past 40+ years. So, we guess you could call that a ritual. We burn a bit of fire on our djinn’s lamp each day, feeding him for when he is needed magically. And Zardoa has a series of exercises and magical rituals, involving Reiki, Qigong and Elven Magic that he does every morning and evening sending out blessings to our kindred everywhere, and he has done so for awhile and will continue for however long. Until he stops, we guess. Occasionally, the whole process changes or mutates. Sometimes Zardoa adds something. Sometimes he alters what he is doing. The magic is ever transforming.

Silver Flame has her own magic rituals, as well, as she often uses Tarot cards or creates spells to help those we love and adore. She also has a practice she has been doing for years of doing magic in public places, sending out magical light from her eyes for Elven Blessings to those she feels need blessings, which is about everyone. We could do magic together on a daily basis, but that would require a bit of organization and that’s just unlikely to happen. In that way, we are typical elves of the Aquarian Age, each doing our own thing together. It is not that we never do magic in concert, for of course we do; and when we do it, it is both powerful and focused on the greater good of Elven Kind. As far as we are concerned, being together, and particularly being happy together, is our greatest magic, our great enchantment. And there are times when something comes up and needs to be dealt with and we put together this or that spell, or send off a spirit or two of the over five hundred that live with us to deal with it. But mostly we just leave them to enjoy thems’elves. No need for busy work here.

For the most part, we just are—we are elves together and that is an incredible magic and what else needs to be done really, except the dishes, which is really what ritual magic is about as far as we are concerned—doing dishes, which we do when they need to be done. Or sometimes, a little later, after they have piled up and there’s no room for cooking, which is another of our near daily rituals.

What Say The Silver Elves About the Difference Between Seelie and Unseelie Fae?

January 17, 2018
YingYangSilverElves
“…the primary difference between the Seelie and Unseelie….is not
that one is good and the other evil but is a difference
in our approach to mankind and the normal folk.”

The terms Seelie and Unseelie come from the Scottish Faerie Traditions, but the idea that there are elves of light or light elves and elves of dark nature can be found in other traditions as well. It really isn’t much different in essence from the whole idea that permeates society of a conflict between good and evil, the light and the dark, although in reality the manifestation of the Seelie and Unseelie and the difference between us is more nuanced and varied than that.

Take, for instance, the whole idea of the Tao and the interplay of opposing forces that creates Life and the Universe, as popularly represented by the Yin-Yang symbol of two swirling energies each with a touch of the other at its center. There are many folk who commonly mistake this symbol for a conflict between good and evil and say that we can’t have one without the other. But this is an inaccurate interpretation. The two primary forces of the Tao are not good and evil but action and assistance or reception to action, or the idea and its fulfillment in reality. Evil or disease results from a failure of the two primary forces to cooperate and assist each other. The two primary forces are like a marriage. If the partners live in harmony, all is well, if not great conflict and suffering ensues. The two primary forces of the Tao are both positive in expression when in harmony with each other.

So it is that some folks might see the Seelie as being the force for light in the world and the Unseelie as being the force for evil, and while there is some truth to this, it is only a partial truth. We would like to say that we Seelie Elves are good people but surely we are not perfect beings and we have also done things in the past that we regret. We strive to be better spiritual beings but alas we are not always successful. Yet still we strive onward. It is our experience that the Unseelie also endeavor to better themselves as people. Their idea of what makes for a better person may differ from our own however. And because the Unseelie are, in part, composed of orcs, goblins, dark faeries and dark elves and so forth, it would be easy to fall into the notion that they are the evil side of Faerie, they are usually surely the scarier side of faerie in an outward fashion, although we Seelie have our scary aspect as well.

But really the primary difference between the Seelie and Unseelie, as we have written elsewhere in our books, is not that one is good and the other evil but is a difference in our approach to mankind and the normal folk. The Unseelie are often hostile to mankind, wish to take revenge upon them for the ill that has been done to our folk, which we quite understand, and in general they don’t mind taking advantage, conning and deceiving man and his kind, since from their point of view he deserves whatever he gets for all the ill he has and continues to do in the world. And this includes his down right rudeness in denying the existence of the Fae at all.

We Seelie folk surely have sympathy for this point of view for we have been brutalized, marginalize and mistreated by man for aeons as well but we have come to the conclusion that cursing man and making him even worse than he is does him or us little good. Our position has ever been to help enlighten and uplift man in hopes that his kind will transform and become less hostile in general to everything and everyone that is different from them, including other men.

That, besides all the trivial differences between the Seelie and Unseelie, is the primary difference between us. So let us all, dear kindred of the Light and Dark, be in harmony and balance together and live with the awareness of both the need for the active and receptive principles to be in balance within each of us.

The Elven Book of Changes

May 25, 2013

We feel fortunate…
Dear Kin…
that we have been using the I Ching oracles everyday for over 30 years and have received valuable spiritual guidance and wisdom. We now have an elven translation of the I Ching written for the magician/ess with non-sexist language, clear interpretations and magical implications of the hexagrams. We do hope you will find it useful. Here included below is a sample of the introduction and of the 1st hexagram.

Kyela,
The Silver Elves

ichingcoved

From the Introduction of “The Elven Book of Changes” by the Silver Elves, available on Amazon:

“We first learned how to do the I Ching from the Elf Queen’s Daughters. We had encountered it previously and had done it, but it was with the Elf Queen’s Daughters that we really learned how to do it effectively, and have since that time been doing it at least once a day for the last 35+ years.”

“The I Ching is one of the oldest, most organized, and in the experience and opinion of these elves, the most accurate of oracles. Whenever we have a truly important question, we always consult the I Ching.”

“While most experts say, and historical data seems to support, that the I Ching has been in use for at least three to four thousand years, the tradition among the Elves is that it is at least 8,000 years old.”

Why a New Version of the I Ching?

“There are many versions of the I Ching, the Wilhelm-Baynes translation being one of the best in our opinion. However, there are aspects of that great book that these elves found unsatisfactory. First, it bore with it the cultural prejudices concerning women that existed at the time it was created. We have tried to create a version that is non-sexist. Most versions of the I Ching speak of the “superior man”, which we find less than satisfactory to many of our sisters.”

“Second, we wanted a version that spoke to elves, elfin magic, and magicians and magic workers overall. This version is created with that in mind.”

“Third, while we believe the Wilhelm/Baynes version is a truly great translation, there were a few lines we simply couldn’t agree with. Also, some made no sense to us in terms of the line and then the hexagram it changed into, so we began again, line by line. While our interpretation is in some instances very similar to the original, in some cases we have altered the interpretation completely.”

HEXAGRAM 1: MAGIC

“The first hexagram represents the primal power from which all things originate. It is conceived of as Magic in a pure undifferentiated state, and thus exists as absolute potentiality. It is energetic by it nature and of the Spirit, and thus represents the Divine. It has all solid lines indicating that it is strong and without weakness, therefore it represents power. It is purposeful, directed toward a goal that may be conceived of as Vision or Destiny.”

“The first primal power is infinite in Being. It is, has always been, and always will be. It extends itself through Space, the second primal power, which exists by virtue of its nonexistence, which because of its receptivity allows the First Power to manifest within Space. This creates the idea of motion, or sequential development from which we derive the idea of Time. This sequential development creates the idea of evolution, by which the Magic realizes its Vision by way of step-by-step development through Space/Time.”

“This sequential realization of the Divine represents a movement from Pure Conscious Being into the Mental Realm and from there into Materiality. This might also be conceived as a descent into the Angelic realm, the Deva realms and “downward” into the individualized material realm, where Divinely inspired Mages illuminate the lives of receptive individuals.”
