If we think of Elfin as another dimension, which it is surely in a sense, then yes there would be portals to Elfin. However, when we say portal, we usually imagine a doorway or perhaps a mirror or some other limited entry way into Elfin or Faerie that exists only at certain places or special spots and sometimes then only at certain times or circumstances. This is often the idea that is presented in tales about Elfin, Faerie and other worlds. You can find just such a notion in Freda Warrington’s great novel Elfland.
For our own part, we Silver Elves are less inclined to think of portals to Elfin being in particular spots as to the idea of special circumstances or techniques enabling one to step from the mundane realm to that more fantastic one. Thus, one is not limited, entirely, by one’s location or position on the planet, but rather dependent upon one’s ability and power to shift into Elfin or Elfin awareness.
This, in that way, would be more in keeping with Carlos Castaneda’s idea as expressed by Don Juan Matus that stepping into the ‘other world’ requires an incredible feat of perception. It’s not about where you are so much as how you experience and view the world around you. The portal to Elfin in that way wouldn’t be in a particular location but would be located anywhere the elf mage exercised hir (his/her) ability to step into the Elfin realm or realms, really. This idea can be found more in our novel The Elves of Lyndarys: A Magical Tale of Modern Faerie Folk, where the characters live in a sort of parallel world that is like but different than the normal beside them.
What Tolkien did was make Elves and Elfin more manifest in the same fashion as there are Japanese people or Dutch people or French people and one can go to their land and visit them. In that way, he made elves and Elfin more accessible by making their realization more possible in a material sense. And, here and there, there are elfin folk and faerie folk, such as ours’elves, and others manifesting as the elfae they and we are and creating Elfin about them by doing so.
For Elfin, from our point of view, and in a sense like Castaneda’s idea, is ever accessible to those who have the courage, knowledge and ability to manifest it. Whether this is wise or not or one should be silent about doing so, we leave to you to decide. There is some debate about this and some proceed one way and others another. We do as circumstances require.
However, we do believe it takes a bit of wisdom to truly manifest Elfin (it is one of the basic ingredients, you might say) and for our own part, we are open about our elfin being to some folks and silent and camouflaged to others. That is how it has always been as far as we can tell for nearly all elfae folk.
From our Silver Elves perspective, Elfin and Faerie are all around us, existing in potential, rather like unmolded clay, perhaps, just waiting for someone to shape it into something recognizable and hopefully wonderful. The problem with the idea of portals to Elfin is that it makes it seem as though anyone who finds the portal could enter Elfin, but that is simply not true. In some ways, a portal to Elfin would be a sort of intelligence test. Only, this test wouldn’t just be of logical intelligence, or of one’s knowledge, and it certainly wouldn’t involve one’s genetics but it would include social intelligence, perhaps artistic intelligence, loving and compassionate intelligence and other aspects that tend to be a part of elfae being. If one doesn’t pass the test one cannot enter. But then, if one doesn’t pass the test then probably they didn’t really wish to enter Elfin in the first place.
In fact, anyone can say that they are an elf and in a certain sense anyone can manifest Elfin. It is not closed to anyone but open to everyone, if you are able to manifest it. However, few people wish to do so and of those who do, they are not always ready for the deeper regions of Elfin. Anyone who desires to do so can manifest Elfin, but how truly? And what are your motivations behind doing so? For these motivations affect the sort of Elfin you will create. We are not really stepping to Elfin for the most part, we are making it real. We’ve had people step into our Eald but that didn’t make them elves, and whether they even perceived they were in Elfin is somewhat questionable. Probably, they only thought, “This is strange. Who are these weirdos?”
Then again, there are Unseelie as well as Seelie elfin and while not everyone will manifest Elfin according to our particular understanding of it, every person has the right to make it real in their own lives as best they may, and no one has the right to decide who is or isn’t an elf or fae save the individual hir own s’elf.
Elfin and Faerie are varied worlds, with all sorts of folk and beings in them, and the chief requirement for entering those worlds is the desire to do so and the effort to live the life elfin. No one’s approval is required, no one’s agreement is needed, magic, which is to say action, rules here. Be the best elf or fae or elfae you may be and we, for our own part, will do our best to help guide you to the inner regions where love reigns and magic and wonder are everywhere if that is your true desire.

Let’s Study Arvyndase, the Magical Language of the Silver Elves!
As many of you know, we now have published not only our book teaching you how to speak and write Arvyndase (see Arvyndase (Silverspeech): A Short Course in the Magical Language of the Silver Elves), but also The Complete Dictionary of Arvyndase with over 30,000 words from English to Arvyndase and from Arvyndase to English.
