Why Are So Many Modern Elves So Into Fashion?

“. . . we put on pointed ears and dress in traditional elfin garb and embrace our magical nature whenever we can, doing whatever we can, no matter how superficial it may seem to link us to the realm and folk that we love and of whom we are so beloved. Wearing elven fashion, dressing in elven raiment is an act of magic. It is an announcement of one’s true nature, one’s connection to Elfin and our kindred elves, and every time one does so it radiates a bit of Elfin into the world.”

Fashion is a particularly faerie thing, usually. Faeries love fashion but elves do also and particularly in this age where our very existence is often denied and in which others feel it their right to ridicule our cultural heritage, never even bothering to ask what we mean when we say we are elves, or making any inquiry at all. We elfin are inclined to cling to those things that declare our elvenness to the world. Thus we put on pointed ears and dress in traditional elfin garb and embrace our magical nature whenever we can, doing whatever we can, no matter how superficial it may seem to link us to the realm and folk that we love and of whom we are so beloved. Wearing elven fashion, dressing in elven raiment is an act of magic. It is an announcement of one’s true nature, one’s connection to Elfin and our kindred elves, and every time one does so it radiates a bit of Elfin into the world.

In many ways, it is not unlike dressing up for Halloween in a fashion that one loves but which would not be deemed appropriate the rest of the year. So many elfin go to faerie faires, ren faires and other gatherings and put on their elven raiment for those events that simply would be socially unacceptable for work or even for just walking around in the world. We love being elves, but most of us are not daring enough as yet, to prance or glide about presenting our true s’elves on a constant basis and the simple fact is that we might lose our jobs if we did so or just face unwanted hostility from miscellaneous folks in the world who believe it is their duty to be the fashion police and keep everyone in line. And in some areas, where the orcs, goblins and grimlins abide, to beat them in line.

Some folk, perhaps many elfae folk, are simply not ready to fully accept their elven nature and thus they dress up and pretend to be what they really are, or pretend to pretend, and approach the borders of Living Elfin as close as they may but they dare not step over into that realm where they’d say, “Yes, I am an elf (or faerie or pixie or whatever),” for fear of others reactions. They still hunger for social approval and acceptance and until they value freedom and mastery of their own responses in the world over the opinions of others, they will never quite pass the threshold (the forest’s edge) into Elfin. But whenever we wander among them, we do our best to nurture them and they have our love and sympathy for their predicament.

We who have fully embraced our elven nature, still must often move with caution through the world at times. Sometimes camouflaging our s’elves and our natures, most times wearing raiment that is suggestive of the elven but isn’t quite smacking it in their faces the way pixies often do.

So why are so many elves into fashion? Because we love being fair. We love being the fair folk, the faire folk, the faerie folk and it is our way of saying to those who are open to it, we are elves. Most can’t see it. In fact, most refuse to see the truth. They see what they wish to see ever limited by their stereotypes and preconceptions, but for those who are ready, something stirs in them and they feel the Call of Elfin, just as we did and think, I may just step a bit closer. And we ever await them.
